Corker Says "More Modest" Immigration Bill Needed
The Chattanoogan.com ^ | 6/22/2007 | Unlisted

Anticipating a cloture vote on the immigration bill on Tuesday, U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) today said he will be in opposition.

He said, “I plan to vote against cloture on the immigration bill, as I have already done twice during this debate. I believe a better approach would be a more modest bill that focuses on border security, employer identification, and putting systems in place that will put us in a position to actually enforce a new immigration policy.

Sen. Lamar Alexander said he will also vote against cloture.

I suppose Lamar! took a break from trying to figure out a way to ram an internet tax through and from proposing legislation banning windmills to look at the immigration problem. All he really needed to do is look out the window. Can't swing a dead cat here in SE Tennessee without hitting an illegal.....then again, if you aren't careful one might just hit you.

I guess “modest” is the appropriate word given that the Amnestyville Horror amounts to naked aggression against the American people.

Its all nice and fine when legislators actually listen to their constituents, but the fact is, they never should have supported this monstrosity to begin with....we shouldn’t have had to yell at them to get them to do the right thing.....that is what is really frustrating about all this..

Looks like Kay’s ‘no’ announcement yesterday was all the prodding the other ‘fence-sitting’ senators needed. I would suspect also that a 14% congressional approval in the latest Gallup poll could help them make up their minds too!

Good for Lamar! Alexander. I hope he’s learned how much this means to the people he’ll have to rely on for reelection, but I think Lamar! still needs careful scrutiny and plenty of letters.

Two down, and by my count, about 13 more to go to stop cloture. There will be two big votes: the cloture vote, in which 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture and bring the bill to the floor, and the final vote approving the bill, which only requires a simple majority of 50 votes for it to pass. These people need to be leaned on to vote against cloture, first and foremost, because their “no” vote will count for less when only a majority is needed to pass the bill. I believe the Dems have the votes to pass the bill on the final vote. DEMAND THAT THEY VOTE AGAINST CLOTURE.

This part was perfectly stated:

We must secure the border first once and for all, verified by credible sources, without amnesty, you are here legally or you are not here.

But then it was somewhat soured by this line:

We also must make it easier for highly skilled workers to come to America

No, we need to put Americans in America before all others, and we need to shatter and discard for good this paradigm of letting strangers gorge on us. We train Americans for those jobs, and let foreigners develop their own damned industries themselves.

But I was so satisfied to read the first quote, that I will pretend the second quote wasn't there, for now.

Here’s Bill OReilly’s ‘simple plan’

1) secure the southern border with 700, not 300 miles of barrier, double the border patrol and back them up with 10,000 National Guards people. That would effectively shut down human and drug smuggling from Mexico.

2) require all illegal aliens in the country right now to register at the post office with Homeland Security. After registering, they would be given a tamper proof ID card, designating their status and their right to work temporarily in the USA. If the illegal aliens do not register, it’s a criminal felony. Right now sneaking across the border is a civil action. Remember that. Subjecting the person to immediate deportation or jail time. The criminal penalty goes way up.
3) Any business that hires an illegal worker who doesn’t have a tamper proof ID card faces draconian fines and possible prison time for the executives.
4) Each illegal alien would have his case reviewed by federal authorities. And they would decide who would receive a Z-visa to stay and who would not. That takes the blanket amnesty, something many American hate, off the table. It also allows the feds to make rational decisions about who’s helping America and who isn’t.

Under that banner, no illegal alien who commits a crime while here would be allowed to stay. Also under that program, no welfare of any kind would be paid to folks here illegally. They’d have to work for their living.

Now that is a fair immigration plan that I believe would be acceptable to most Americans. It would also allow the feds to quickly build a database, so Homeland Security would know the extent of the alien intrusion, which we don’t know now.

Again, any illegal alien who didn’t cooperate with the new law would immediately become an outlaw. And immediate action could be taken against that non-citizen who doesn’t comply. That would end the sanctuary city madness and give the federal government more tools to regain control over this out of control situation.

So there you have it — a fair plan to give good people a chance to stay here and earn cit

:::::
His fanatic pursuit of this atrocity against the American people is profoundly shocking. I truly question his suitability to be President for this, and other reasons. A President must work hard FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, and not the people of another country at major cost and impact to his own country. I seriously doubt all of his staff is in agreement with an outright afront to the American people, and especially those that installed him in the Oval Office for two terms....

I agree. These senators who went public with their NO vote on clouture could have remained silent and simply voted NO.

By going public with their intention to vote NO, they have started a snowball effect, of which I’m sure Trent Lott and Lindsey Graham are none to happy with.

After all these GOP pro-amnesty bunch will be left holding the stinking bag. Voters in these respective states will remember them come elections.

Their neighbors to the south, Cochran won’t say, and Lott is for it. What’s happened to Mississippi?

Anyway Cochran is running next year, so if he votes yes, look for a retirement or a hard primary.

Vacant Lott is there until 2012. All please TELL your senators you have no faith in the party leadership and you want Lott out the Whip spot or no money!

In defense of Corker, I believe that he meant traditional immigrants (folks who come here to become citizens) when he referred to highly skilled workers.

The sad truth is it takes several years to immigrate legally into this country.

Bashing any immigration does not help our position.

We should all be for legal immigration. After all, all our ancestors came from some other continent.

I do not agree with President Bush’s position, but this has ALWAYS been his view. He has principles and sticks by them which is more than you can say about most politicians. You should be more upset with “the Swimmer” for coming up with the brilliant idea of the “Z visa” and snookering the Republicans into accepting it. Unless Bush uses an executive order, he can do nothing without legislation created and passed by Congress. They should be our focus now.

You are propably right. These pro-manesty GOP senators will blame Reid for some procedural mis conduct and en masse vote against clouture.

That still won’t get Trent Lott, Lindsey Graham off the hook with their respective voters. Especially Graham, who is up for re-election in 08.
