WASHINGTON - The Senate voted Thursday to increase fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon for cars and SUVs, the first significant boost demanded of automakers in nearly 20 years.

Until their LIMOs get that kind of mileage, they can go to hell.
Toon refused to raise CAFE standards, and I don’t recall the enviroweenies and the rest of the libs giving him a ration of excrement for his refusal...
35 mpg on what, though? If they are required to be E-85 capable and get 35 mpg on E-85, that’s gonna hurt.
"The fools on the hill" have voted that Issac Newton was wrong about mass & energy.
California tried a similar requirement that dealers offer a certain amount of “alternative fuel” or electric vehicles. Dodge sold electric golf carts at the dealerships. Haha!
My 4x4 crew cab, 5.3 V8, 2007 Silverado gets 21 mpg at 75 mph on a fairly flat road trip. I was astounded at this, but can hardly wait till I can buy one that gets 35 mpg.
It will fit in the bed of your existing truck :)
V8s are gone.
Would somebody just handcuff and gag the U.S. Senate until 2009? These folks are worthless. They want to give us illegal amnesty, gas price hikes, now this?
Idiocy. Just idiocy.
what is E-85????
“V8s are gone.”
They will die trying to get mine!!!
Why wait so long? Why not just implement the mileage increase for 2008? Gas is expensive right now. C'mon Congress, if you can mandate the increase by fairy magic, then the auto industry can fufill your fantasy by fairy magic.
Our Congressmorons think they can dictate economics. That was tried in the former USSR and it proved to be a dismal failure. Apparently our Congressmorons haven’t heard the news yet.
Google it and you’ll get 3,120,000 answers. Leave out the hyphen.
My boy has a Yukon SUV that gets pretty bad mileage, but he drives back and forth to work in an $800 Geo Metro (3 cyl) that gets fantastic mileage.
... by 2020? That is essentially meaningless legislation. There will be at least 6 congressional elections between now and then. Seems any one one of a number of future congresses could just overturn this if it passes. However, experience shows it is usually difficult to overturn liberal legislation once it passes.
I’m investing in good used trucks. There will be a good market for them in 10 years.
Why aren't we pushing for a garbage driven vehicle?
We really should be cutting to the chase.
Think of all the people who would be made happy except for garbage pick up people.
Meaningless legislation is rated anymore.
Good meaningless legislation to bad meaningless legislation.
It's show of appreciation is via political credits..
This delivers the coup de grace to the dying US auto industry.
I’m gonna keep my Fords and GMC; they’re museum pieces.
snazeee yet dangerous....
This just in...Castro plans to finance his whole economy by selling his 'classic' 60's era car and truck collection at the next US car auction. /sarc
GM said that if this passed, the Camaro would die, and the V8s would all be cancelled.
HEY you gues hear about that car they got? It runs on water man....only they won’t make it because they know that if they use up all the water then the common man will drink beer man....and then no one will obey all the laws....because they’ll all be drunk on beer.....
......hyde
also
you know they had this guy see back in 1952 well he invented this special carbuetor.....and it was connected to a big Packard.....and they poured a thimble full of gass into it....and it ran 50 miles on just that one thimbleful gas....but the big oil companys bought the plans for that carb. and then and then they destroyed those plans....
but one copy has survived and its hidden in a safe in ARCO’S basement. Congress knows they got that copy of those plans and now they are raising the cafe standards so BIG OIL has to
open that safe and start makin that carb. to end our oil crises.....cagey eh?
85% ethanol. The “standard” alcohol fuel.
That’s over a 100% increase over every other GM owner of one of those I’ve ever heard pre-2007.
Must have a hell of a tailwind wherever you go
1,000 MPG would be better yet. While they’re being ridiculous.
Hell, make it a 100 MPG
I just bought 2 new CROWN VICS one to drive till it wears out then i switch to the other one which is in storage....
no finer safer care exists which is why the gov’t is tryin to exterminate ‘em. they may try to outlaw em but im never given up MY BIG VIC!
MOLON LABE suckas
I’m working on a version that uses NO fossil fuels. The libs should LOVE it, right? It burns Spotted Owls and Snail Darters.
I bought a Camry last year. The best highway mileage I have gotten is 34. I thought that was pretty good.
These turkeys want 35. That would be great if they outlawed all big trucks off the Highways so they couldnt run down these roller skates on wheels.
Look for the death toll to mount.
Seat belts, air bags, side air bags. Nothing is going to help much when a dump truck with 25 tons of gravel goes over that Geo.
This is my 4th new Silverado. My last one had the 4.8 V8 and got 19 mpg on a similar drive. The previous 2 Chevy pu’s got 17-19 hwy. Keep in mind that this 21 mpg was on cruise control and on the flats with no hills or city driving. Tailwind? Don’t know. Blew me away.
Ha,ha,ha,VERY GOOD !!!
Here we go. My ‘79 four-speed Camaro will be worth a kings ramsome.
Are these half-tons?
if so, my bad. I was thinking of the HD 2500 or whatever they call their Heavy duty 3/4 ton.
The owners of those around here, envy the 13mpg I get with my Ford HD.
Next one though, my loyalty may change with the best mileage.
thank you
Let the market decide - people that don't want to pay high prices for gas will buy smaller cars. People that aren't as bothered by the price will buy larger cars if they want. This is typical statist solutions to market problems. And these market problems are caused by statist solutions in the first place.
They are just pandering for votes. If they wanted to improve the nations fuel economy, they could reduce the max speed limit to 45 mph. They would only have to do this if there was a REAL problem.
It’s all B.S.
Toon caved to political pressure on CAFE, especially from the unions. I guess the unions are smaller than Al Gore these days....
Last time they did something this stupid, the 18 mpg station wagon was replaced by the 14 mpg SUV. Idiots.Exactly right, especially that last observation. Btw, CAFE orginated in 1975, following a government-created gas "crisis." Same thing today. So what do you suppose will be the consumer opt-out on this one?
My guess is that makers will sell 18,550 mpg fuel-cell or electrics that will up the averages to 35.
I’m starting to realize the Rush is right. Gridlock IS better when congress can’t agree on things and passes stupid, freedom-destroying legislation. I remember when a coke cost 20 cents. Now it costs 1.25. It isn’t fair. Won’t they pass legislation mandating that coke has to cost 50 cents, and when will they start investigating the greedy soft drink industry? Those fat cats are making an obscene profit on sugar water.
Mine were all 1/2 tons. I agree, the 2500’s are pretty ugly on mpg.
