WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sixteen of the two dozen amendments the Senate will consider attaching to a revived immigration bill come from senators who helped derail the legislation earlier this month.
A list of the proposed changes obtained by The Associated Press illustrates how key Republicans and Democrats plotting to revive the measure before the Fourth of July recess are trying to placate critics by holding votes to address their top concerns.
The proposals range from bids to make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to gain legal status to attempts to give family members of U.S. citizens more opportunities to immigrate.
The bipartisan coalition that crafted the deal is keeping the still-tentative list under tight wraps as they scramble to fine-tune it with an eye toward attracting the widest possible swath of converts to the bill. The measure, which would grant as many as 12 million illegal immigrants lawful status while tightening border security, stalled on June 7 when just 45 senators voted to end debate and move to a final vote well short of the 60 whose backing was needed.
The package of changes was described by three congressional aides close to the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the list is confidential and subject to change.
Under the plan, Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., would get a vote on his plan to bar illegal immigrants from getting green cards. Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia would see consideration of his amendment to limit legalization to certain unlawful immigrants who have been in the U.S. four years or more.
Both voted "no" during the test-vote that blocked the bill's progress.

All the negative stuff will be killed in conference kill it before it gets there.
So...they get to see their amendments rejected. Hopefully, no one has agreed to vote for cloture in exchange for that.
The fact that they won’t put this thing through the committee process and instead depend on a small group of conspirators to cobble this bill together just stinks.
Don't you mean "All the conservative/logical/reasonable stuff will be killed in conference before it gets there?
Still hiding the details until they line up enough votes. Then they'll rush it through before the phone lines start burning up with calls from enraged dupes (constituents).
Yes, Americans will see the votes, just as we saw Thompson’s votes in favor of third-world floods of labor.

“Under the plan, Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., would get a vote on his plan to bar illegal immigrants from getting green cards.”
So they’ll get Z visas. Not very meaningful.
What had become dead, should stay dead.
They have been illegal,, and with a stroke of a pen their crime is forgiven, and they get lawful status. Is there a word for that?
gnat...
So...they get to see their amendments rejected. Hopefully, no one has agreed to vote for cloture in exchange for that.
***********************************************************
I think that is the plan. You get your amendment voted on, it fails, you use it for cover, then you vote for cloture.
They don’t need us stinking peon voters anymore!! But we get to pay for it!!!
The transnational oligarchs will have their slaves. The Democrats will have their voters. The hapless Republicans will lose power. Conservatives will get screwed (and pay he tab). The USA will be further Balkanized, on the slippery slope to the end
LEGAL immigration.
It can all be legal, after it’s all legalized.
“The measure, which would grant as many as 12 million illegal immigrants lawful status while tightening border security, stalled on June 7 when just 45 senators voted to end debate and move to a final vote well short of the 60 whose backing was needed.”
Should say, “...which would grant AT LEAST 12 million....”
“Is there a word for that?”
Amnesty. Just like in 1986.
It is amusing to watch Democrats and liberal media dancing around that word, criticizing opponents as somehow dark for using that word.
Their thoughts are shared fears of Bush and Rove, though I bet they do not know so. Rove has proffered Bush with a “No Amnesty” stand for years, a trick, and now the “Read My Lips, No New Taxes” moment has come. An inordinate amount of Rove’s work has been to cast the amnesty bill as something other than amnesty. Use of the word is an automatic admission that “Bush Lied.”
I’d say Rove has done well. Time magazine called a spade a spade and said “amnesty” but most lib media is following the Rove line demonizing people who call it amnesty.
They’re catering to senators’ egos. Smart, I guess.
“It can all be legal.”
Exactly. The biggest issue is the overall amount of immigration (and where it’s from), not whether it’s illegal, important though that is. Illegal immigration is still a big problem even if it’s made legal. When conservatives say they’re only concerned about illegal immigration, they throw away half the debate.
These 12 amendments are nothing more than meaningless amendments designed to provide political cover for Senators to vote in favor of the overall bill. Everyone of those amendments will have an escape clause in the final bill to obviate their intent. Bet on it.
“Under the plan, Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., would get a vote on his plan to bar illegal immigrants from getting green cards.”
VERY GOOD IDEA - LETS GET ALL GOP TO SUPPORT THIS.
” Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia would see consideration of his amendment to limit legalization to certain unlawful immigrants who have been in the U.S. four years or more.”
ANOTHER GOOD AMENDMENT. LIMITS THE DAMAGE OF Z VISA AMNESTY SOMEWHAT. WE NEED TO SEE THIS GET MAJORITY SUPPORT.
Both voted no during the test-vote that blocked the bills progress.
“Also making the list is an amendment by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., that would bar illegal immigrants from collecting Social Security benefits for work done while they were in the U.S. unlawfully.”
DOES THIS ERASE THE TRILLION DOLLAR LOOPHOLE?
“Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, one of only 11 Democrats who voted against expediting final action on the bill, would get a vote on her amendment to reduce the number of temporary workers admitted to the U.S. based on how many guest laborers overstayed their visas.”
Um, this likely wont have a practical effect, but its interesting that its utility IS PREDICATED ON THE SYSTEM CONTINUING TO BREAK DOWN. Doesnt this prove the critics RIGHT?!?
Democrats already succeeded in revising the bill to lower the cap from as many as 600,000 per year to 200,000.”
Yes, and they sunset the program... so leaving nothing for the business lobbies to like.
Also in the package, as currently drafted, are:
“_An amendment by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, to mandate that all illegal immigrants return home within two years to gain lawful status. The bill only requires those seeking green cards to do so.”
This is a figleaf / garnish on amnesty that does very little.
“_A proposal by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., to increase the number of points under a new merit-based green card allocation system that could be awarded for being related to a U.S. citizen or green card holder.”
AN ABSOLUTE WRONG THING. This is an attempt to keep “chain migration” system even in the new merit based legal immigration, SUBVERTING ITS VERY INTENT!
The Democrats want to keep the worst kind of immigration,
crowding out immigration of skilled English-speaking highly employable people. Sigh.... the only good news is that simialr proposals by Clinton and Obama failed.
“_An amendment by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., to condition any legal status for unlawful immigrants on the measures border security and workplace enforcement measures. The bill would instead allow such immigrants to get probationary legal status while those so-called triggers were being met.”
Unclear description. If it is saying that no probationary visas until the triggers are met ... GOOD IDEA.
_A proposal by Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., to increase penalties on employers who repeatedly hire illegal immigrants.’
THIS IS MEANINGLESS BECAUSE WE DONT ENFORCE THE LAW AND ASSESS FINES MUCH EVEN TODAY!
“_An amendment by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, to replace the employment verification system with a less-burdensome alternative.”
Devil in the details. Last year, Grassley and Cornyn exposed the workplace verification as unworkable gibberish. Now, we have Heritage complaining that the system burdens *legal* citizens, but doesnt go after illegal aliens.
This kind of issue suggests why we should NOT have comprehensive bill. That one issue - workplace verification - is complex and difficult enough that it should be its own bill.
“_An amendment by Montanas Democratic Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester, who opposed moving to a final vote on the bill, to remove requirements that workers present REAL ID drivers license to prospective employers.”
Sounds like an attempt to gut workplace verification.
“_An amendment by Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., to let law enforcement agencies share information about peoples immigration status.”
THIS WAS VOTED DOWN BY ONE VOTE. IS THE “FIX IN” TO LET THIS GO FORWARD, BUY VOTES, THEN KILL IT IN CONFERENCE? KEEP PRESSURING COLEMAN TO VOTE NO ON THE BILL AND ON CLOTURE!
“_An amendment by Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, the sole Independent to oppose the June 7 test vote, to bar companies that have had mass layoffs from hiring foreign high-tech workers.”
Interesting proposal, and could well be a poison pill for business support. High tech firms layoff on a regular basis yet have lots of H1B workers.
There are SO MANY OTHER PROBLEMS IN THE BILL NOT ADDRESSED BY THESE AMENDMENTS. Start with Sessions’ 20 loopholes.
The fact that gang members can get amnesty or that illegal immigrants have a leg up against legal immigrants on the green card line. This bill needs at least 50 amendments; it is a travesty.
You got it..
“illegal immigrants”
“Quit using stupid, PC phrase like this MSM. It is either illegal aliens or alien law breakers. “
No, the PC term used to be just ‘immigrants’ as if laws dont matter (as in “immigrants are worried about calls for deportation”), and is now ‘undocumented Americans’ - harry reid used that term. What a joke!
I will repeat what I said on another thread. Bush and the Senate are date-raping the American people. NO means NO!!!!
How many times are the stupid going to revisit the same failure? America oughta kick its own ass for putting such dimwits in the position of US Senate.
They are ‘feel good’ admendments full of loopholes like Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s designed to fool us into believing they are fixing a bad bill.
They are feel good admendments full of loopholes like Kay Bailey Hutchinsons designed to fool us into believing they are fixing a bad bill.
It’s immaterial, as most, if not all of these amendments will be voted down anyhow. It’s all smoke and mirrors.
The President, and any Senator who comes close to voting for the Amnesty Bill must be dis-invited to any and all upcoming Independence Day/ Fourth of July celebrations.
The lame duck George spent years of his terms doing a real sparse and pathetic “out- to -lunch” job of using the bully pulpit of the Presidency for things that matter, and of all things, he picks THIS moment to get vocal about his advocacy to destroy the Country from within with this sham of Bill !?!
Never thought there would come a day when the holder of the highest office on this Globe would so callously forsake his duty enough to where he would be an unwelcome sight at the Fourth of July.
No fireworks for you Jorge.
Thanks for the links! Duncan Hunter has been standing tall on Immigration for which a lot of us are very grateful. It is a bad bill.
I see that Lamar Smith my former Congressman from TX along with Peter King get it — enforce border security first with their new bill.
I signed his petition!
It doesn’t need amendment, it need to be tossed in File 13 — the trash can.
Enforce the laws on the books and build the fence on both borders including a virtual reality fence that can be monitored 24/7 and know where to send INS when there is a breech.
You’re welcome, and thank you for the reply. I also signed it.
A friend saw this demonstration yesterday.
we are in a tinder box on the immigration issue and sooner or later we are going read one to many stories of good Americans being harmed by illegal immigrants and the crap is going to hit the fan in a big way.
I am for an organized peaceful protest, on the same day , in all fifty state capitals. Purchase a little talk radio time (or just get them on the cheap) get the ball rolling and let’s just see if we can stop traffic in and around the capital complexes of all 50 states for a whole day. The only power our govt. has is the power we give them and we do not need a recall election to take it back.
If we could muster about 50k people per state , in every capital , all day long , on the same day I think our politicians would be mortified. It worked in TN on the state income tax issue and let’s be honest , we are conservatives and in the habit of keeping extra vacation time on the books. What better way to spend it than to stop a bill that is immoral, illegal and just plain wrong.
ping
Do we really need more reasons to call our representatives in Washington, D.C.?
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!
