Despite Bush’s Promises, Georgians Remain Skeptical About Immigration Bill
New York Times ^ | June 19, 2007 | ROBERT PEAR

MARIETTA, Ga., June 18 — If President Bush thought he could win support for a comprehensive immigration bill by promising to secure the border and step up law enforcement, he would be dismayed by the reaction here.

Mark A. Johnson, with his wife, Ann. “Everybody can see the folly of it, everybody but the politicians,” Mr. Johnson said of the immigration bill.

“It’s all window dressing,” said Mark A. Johnson, a real estate lawyer in this fast-growing suburb of Atlanta. “We don’t believe the government has the will to enforce any of these promises. Everybody can see the folly of it, everybody but the politicians.”

NO ONE believes the politicians. Quite simply, their promises lack credibility. If Bush and the Open Borders Crowd believe in enforcement, nothing is stopping them from ENFORCING our current laws RIGHT NOW, TODAY. But the fact they refuse to enforce those laws and that they hold enforcement of them hostage to their getting amnesty just makes people mad as hell. There's a huge disconnect between regular folks in Flyover Country and the Washington elite. What they're peddling in Washington is a sham and every one knows it.

So let me guess...

the NYT have found that Georgians disagree with Bush on this subject, so suddenly we aren’t all hootch-swillin’, dog-kickin’, gun-totin’, truck-drivin’, teeth-missin’, wife-beatin’ rednecks?

Whatever.

Senator Chambliss, who is up for re-election next year, was booed last month when he defended the bill at the state Republican convention. In nearby Gwinnett County, the local Republican Party adopted a resolution last week urging both senators to “vote no on this amnesty bill.”

The word is getting out...

"Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson...have been edging away from it..."

Edging away??? You guys had better run like hell! And of greater importance--renounce the damn thing!

Have you read it??? All 700-or-so pages of it??? Which version??? Any of them??? Any of it???

Nobody knows what's in this "bill"!

To attempt to foist an unknown thing like this--loaded with Time Bombs and no telling what other kinds of Bombs--on the American people is outrageous--and dangerous! No wonder we are furious!

If it is not the ultimate in irresponsibility, it's worse: It's the ultimate in treachery!

The American people are seriously QUESTIONING YOUR JUDGMENT!

“The provision of the bill that appeals most to Hispanic groups and many Democrats — a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants — generates the most opposition from conservatives.”

This is a standard left MSM meme. Conservatives “hate” the soft sounding “path” to citizenship. It’s like Karl Rove has them in a mind control vise.

This bill is instant legalization forever for 12-20 million for $250.00 per year under the Z Visa provisions.

Yes. Kick ‘em out at the first opportunity—if not right now.

Seems like if you made him think he was already done for, you'd lose your leverage. You have to make him think it's just a temporary spat, that as long as he votes correctly on this, all will be forgotten. Then, even if he votes correctly, when it comes time for a primary, oppose him with vigor for even thinking about it,and wasting everyone's time making us write/call/email to get him to do the obviously right thing. But for now, you make him think it's recoverable.

Oh yay! The NYT's ran a story saying the country dislikes it. Even Democrats! I'm shocked. Well, I am shocked, because it was a fairly decent article for once. Good news is that our lords in D.C. who can't be bothered to listen to the American people do read the NYT's and believe every word it quotes as gospel. maybe this will stop a couple in their tracks.

Mr. Johnson, the real estate lawyer, said: “Senator Kennedy must have some sort of Svengali influence on people. They go into a backroom negotiation with him, and they come out bamboozled.”

Pact with the devil is more like. Everyone should be required to bring a crucifix into a room that he is in.

I used to say McCain was the politician I hated most in D.C. I'm revising that to kennedy. While McCain (and Lott) are usually at the heart of embracing anything rotten that happens in the GOP, Kennedy usually is the instigator. think what a better world it would be if those two were removed. And they can take Lott with them.

I wonder which phrase Conservatives would hate more if polled.

“Compassionate Conservative” or “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”?

It would be a tight race, the former used to win the prize. i think the latter would take it now.

Sure, so long as the bill is finally killed, support for it will be recoverable. But if anyone who supported the bill ever wants my vote they will have to manage an apology that makes even Zumbo's look weak.

Not me. Chambliss and Isakson are toast. They ran on “No amnesty”. I called Chambliss’ office early on and was told that he didn’t know how he would vote. I hung up and immediately was confronted by the picture of my senators yukking it up with The Swimmer, after helping to put it together.

I called the office back and BLASTED them, and they tried some lame “He’s being framed by the media” excuse.

Then they both proceeded to make public statements about how stupid and uneducated their constituents were, and then they claimed that the furor was dying down.

They can NEVER be trusted again. I am watching them with a gimlet eye from now on. They proved they are not conservatives.

On the other hand, Jeffrey M. Smith, an Atlanta lawyer with many clients from China, India and Mexico, said: “The idea of a fence is just nuts. It will not stop people coming to this country. It will cost a lot of money. It will create a lot of ill will in Central and South America. It will look as if we are keeping out Hispanics, and that’s what we would be doing.”

He says a fence won't work, then says we would be keeping out Hispanics with one. Well, if a fence can keep out Hispanics that would be over half the borders jumpers. I'd like to see a photo of this guys home. I'll bet he has a fence. If someone who's making money off illegals says a fence won't work, it tells me they fear it'll greatly reduce their client base.
I don't see why we should care how Central & South America feel, they protect their borders without creating ill will.

Mr. Smith endorsed the idea of legal status for illegal immigrants.

“They should be naturalized, become citizens and pay taxes,” Mr. Smith said. “If you don’t give them an amnesty, you will drive them further underground.”

Well, at least he calls it what it is, amnesty. I'm ready to "drive them further underground", along with anyone who has assisted them in any way.

Why are we even having this argument over illegal immigration? As I recall, this whole push for legalization got started with Americans demand for a stop to illegal immigration. If we'd wanted them here we would not have complained about them. I don't see that legalizing them will solve any of the problems that got me upset in the first place. They'll still be; having children on my dime, crowding our schools and hospitals, destroying our culture. Even debating legalizing the invaders is an insult to me and my family.
