At the April meeting of the Rockingham County (NC) Board of Education, the board voted 8-4 to mandate Standard Mode Of Dress (school uniforms) at Reidsville Middle and Reidsville High schools starting in the 2007-2008 school year. However, the vote was made on the basis of a survey that was fraudulently conducted. The board voted to impose the uniforms anyway.
There have been 3 meetings of the board in which parents and students have made it clear that they DO NOT WANT the uniforms. The board is refusing to acknowledge this opposition. In protest of this refusal to recognize public sentiment against the uniforms, I intend to wear a full Jedi Knight costume to the meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Education at 6 p.m. on July 9th, 2007.
This video is a segment from Star Talk on WGSR Star 39 in Reidsville, North Carolina early in the evening of June 14th, 2007, in which host Mark Childrey interviewed me (by phone) about my planned protest, and during which an invitation was extended to other opponents of S.M.O.D. to likewise come in outrageous attire to protest both the uniforms and the board's indifference toward its constituents.

I personally think that uniforms make a lot of sense at the middle school level for government schools. There’s always home schooling or private schools if you want to dress geto.
Good. Uniforms should be mandatory at all public schools.
Don’t like it? Take your kid to a private school or home school them.
>>>>Theres always home schooling or private schools if you want to dress geto.
Private schools, geto?
My children have uniforms in private school.
Bite your tongue.
Would you favor similar treatment for someone similarly protesting President Bush over the shamnesty? Or does freedom of speech apply only to issues that you agree with?
Oh well. As I said, when we post to correct another's typo, we'll make one ourselves. I'm sure that applies to posts about education as well.
Oh for Pete’s sake, IT WAS A JOKE.
School boards shouldn't be ignoring the demands of parents (within reason).
As I said above, if it's done for humorous effect, great. If it's a typo, well hey, we all make those. If it's done unintentionally, it rather undercuts one's ability to make arguments pertaining to education.

And you’re how old, again? You certainly haven’t been to school in the last 15 years.
Uniforms eliminate people wearing “gang colors”. And gangs ARE a problem in schools these days.
You don't think stripping off a business suit, to reveal an Emperor Palpatine outfit (with a NO AMNESTY!) sign in front of George Bush would be a patriotic act??!! :)
All fine an’ dan’y, but intenshunal misspellin’s by rap “artists” o’ marketin’ departments don’t change th’ dickshunary. Th’ opposite of heavy is not “lite”, th’ opposite of day is not “nite”, an’ an inner city area heavily populated by thet city’s pore is not a “gito”.
As ah said above, eff’n it’s done fo’ hoomrus effeck, great. Eff’n it’s a typo, fine hey, we all make them. Eff’n it’s done unintenshunally, it rather unnercuts one’s ability t’make argoomnts pertainin’ t’ejoocayshun.

OK, but we sci-fi fans take our space operas seriously. I'm still trying to get my lady to watch at least the very first Star Wars, and that Star Trek where they save the whales. It's tough to make references to either genre, and have them go right over her head...
Regular school? Over 20 years. Attended a technical school back in 2001. Besides which I aint the one going to this meeting in a Jedi costume. I dont even live in North Carolina.
Uniforms eliminate people wearing gang colors. And gangs ARE a problem in schools these days.
True, but apparently not in certain schools in Rockingham County, NC. When the gangs take over THOSE schools, then the parents will turn around.
Go into the kitchen and scream at her "KHAAAAAANNNN!!!!! KHAAAAANNNN!!!! KHAAAAANNNN!!!!!", over and over again untill she gives in.
Works for me.
Another point - it also eliminates any annoying T-shirts-with-slogans, which disarms a lot of leftist stupidity.
I know it's railing against the wind to complain about misspelled words on the 'net given the general level of public education these days, but it still rankles to see it. Right after I posted my first comment, a post appeared here on FR with the headline "This photo is dieing for a caption". I still have marks on my forehead from banging my head into the keyboard.
My contribution to that thread on post number 78. :-)
Stupidity is strong with these youn Padawans.

To get the look, wear your boxers about 2 inches below you waist, and oversized shorts or pants at about the middle of your buttocks (the stride should be just above the knees for the proper look. Wear a muscle shirt and a hoodie on top. And you too can have that geto look. Oops, I forgt the gold chain and the 200 tennis shoes.
Nobody should be wearing T-Shirts with slogans at school anyway.
How about just a photo of you. :-)
Given some of the CafePress and home-produced photo T-shirts I’ve seen high schoolers wearing these days? No photo T-shirts, either.
Look, as I said, if you did it on purpose (and it appears you did) then fine. Since you have that reference handy, can you see if "dieing" is listed there as well, so I can take it to the other thread I mentioned?
This guy made the case for uniforms by making this pledge. Wait until he finds out that the police have something better and bigger than his light saber. Hope he knows not to pull his or....
Or you could just wave your hand in front of her face and whisper, “These are not the droids you’re looking for” That gets em every time.
Except I’ve run across putatively well educated 20 somethings who use the word as so defined.
As to ‘dieing’ - I’m not familiar with it. Perhaps it is a term from a tool and die shop, having something to do with using a die.
Or could it be a variant of dyeing, translated into a more modern spelling?
Nope, won't be bringing the lightsaber.
I will, however, be bringing a Bible.
Guess you could say that I'm going armed with the surest Sword of all.
You scare me
Do you want to leave this world a little better place for your children, than how it was when you first found it?
That's not going to happen by staying behind a keyboard. Or by being faithful to the party line.
Something more is required.

The folks elected the school board to do THEIR bidding. Not to ignore them untill the next election.
Going by your line of logic, George Bush was elected. Let him run things (ie: illegal immigration amnesty).
The board voted 7-3 (and 2 abstentions) to completely rescind their vote in April to implement the school uniforms. It's now entirely off the table.
In addition to the Jedi costume, one student came dressed in prison stripes and dozens of other parents and students wore black armbands to protest the uniforms.
I agree with what one of the board members who had changed her mind said: this was a tremendous experience for the young people to have gone through, because they learned a LOT about how government works and how they too have a role to play in it.
So, we won. "The Force was with us" :-)
Afterwards, did you celebrate your victory at the Mos Eisley Cantina? ;-)
