A federal judge sentenced tax protesters Ed and Elaine Brown to more than five years in prison yesterday, giving them sentences at the top of the range recommended by probation officers but below sentencing recommendations offered by the prosecutor.
The couple did not attend the hearing, and Ed Brown refused to recognize the sentence or the federal court that issued it.
"I've been convicted of crimes?" he asked in a phone interview yesterday.
The couple have been holed up in their fortified Plainfield home for several months, saying that any attempts to arrest them will trigger a violent confrontation with federal officials.

What a doofus.
Ed, pull your head out of your heinie and join the real world. It smells nicer out here.
I think an airstrike is in order for these wierdos. Give them what they want.
Funny how they all say things like this then bitch and moan when they get shot up. As wrong as both are, I wouldn't, however, compare this guy and Weaver to Koresh.
Illegal immigrants do that every single day, and the federales do nothing.
Can’t do an airstrike. Collateral damage might include the property of Mister Justice Stephen Breyer, which is right across the road from Browns’ place.
Some laws are more equal than other laws.
The Browns, who maintain that federal income tax laws don’t apply to them, argued during their trial that the laws were invalid.
WTF? What makes them so special? Another thing is that the police are concerned with his internet useage. Well how about turning it off to the house??? I am sure that they could do that. These guys are going to end up dead or in prison for longer than what they have been awarded. I would also charge them for all the police activity that they are causing. These two are wackos!!!!! I can’t imagine any FREEPERS sticking up for these two...but time will tell.
And Mary Winkler just got 210 days for killing her sleeping husband.
The injustice was Mary Winkler’s husband. She should be in jail for life. The Brown’s deserve the five years if not more.
I bet there are or will be Freepers sticking up for these two. Do a search on Ed and Elaine Brown and you will find other threads.
Regarding the internet: I work for the power company that provides electricity to the Browns’ place. One of the linemen told me just yesterday that they had shut the power off only the day before (at the direction of the Marshal). The phone has also been shut off as well. I’m sure they are well prepared for all this and it will not stop them from communicating with the outside world.
Yes sometimes FREEPERS are so anti-government that they can’t see the wrong in what individuals do. Although on the other hand we have some that follow the law when convenient. Can’t help it though, love all of our FRiends even if some are misguided. lol.
Maybe Ed went wrong when he met Elaine. He sang so good with Helen Cornelius, it’s hard to see why he ever gave that up.
“:^o
It’s Souter who lives in Weare. Breyer is from Massachusetts, but like so many of the elite from that state (including Mitt Romney), he has a place here in NH.
Mitt is a RINO
If they don't apply to 20 million illegal aliens and the people who employ them, why should they apply to them?
What does that have to do with the price of putty?
Then I usually whince a little and go to the doctor.
Well, that solves the problem.
Maybe he can be deported to Haiti.
Deport him to Iran, Iraq, or Egypt. Just to be fair, give him his pick of the three.
You'd think they'd send Treasury agents out to take in the Browns.
I agree.
Just A Fact
My understanding is that the government technically has no right to collect income tax; that it’s unConstitutional for them to levee it. Nevertheless, I know better than to think that anyone stands any chance of not paying their taxes and not paying the consequences.
That being said, there’s enough against those nutjobs that should be able to get them locked away for a good, long time. Too bad they didn’t go down in a blaze of glory like he wanted.
Deport him to Iran, Iraq, or Egypt. Just to be fair, give him his pick of the three.
I agree but I think we should change Egypt to North Korea as a choice.
Blast these two all you want, but there only crime is not paying a government that will not enforce any laws except to take your money away from you and give it to people who openly break our laws and commit the exact same crime!
Federal hypocracy in action!
I pay my taxes because the alternative is jail.
I am under no delusion as to the "justice" of stealing from me at gunpoint so that losers, criminals, and lobbyists can live it up with my money.
Has the BATF started passing out the flame-throwers and white-phosphorous grenades yet?
The US Senate’s Committe of the Constitution in the 1960’s said the IRS code may not apply to most workers. Have you heard the Brown’s actual ARGUEMENT in support of their position?
They're afraid it will turn into another Waco and awake the sheeple again.
That’s the point. Freedom loving citzens say their money
belongs to them, not the government.
Maybe they'd have better luck claiming that they're "Undocumented Americans". :-)
Specially if it involves the BigGov's "La Mordida".
Hopefully, when your head gets shot off, you don’t run around tackling sh*t...
Yeah, you're right. I imagine that if we had 12 million Browns out there, the government would roll right over and tell us all how we have to grant "amnesty" to them.
Fortunately, there's only two of them, so Teddy Kennedy and John McCain won't have to work late crafting a "tax amnesty" bill...
People who are uninformed about the Brown situation and the background on the law shouldn’t “shoot from the hip” when making comments. (this is not directed at you John). The Browns tried to work within the system, contacting the IRS years ago trying to get them to provide documentation showing them the law that requires Americans to pay an income tax on wages. They also tried to work within the system in the early days of the court case but the Judge refused to let them submit any evidence (you know, things like the Constitution, old case law, the proof that the amendment was never properly ratified, etc) and only walked out of court at the latter stages because they knew they couldn’t get a fair trial. They have offered to pay their income taxes backdated if the government can show them the law. The government has not been able to do this. Think about this, please. Instead, they will go in with a militarized strike team and the Browns (and their friends) WILL defend their home. The house is NOT FORTIFIED, that is propaganda. The Browns are not whackos, they’re just American citizens who are tired of the tyranny that has been imposed upon us, and are hoping that people like you wake up and see what has been done to us.
Thank You, and I hope there is a possibility that you will look a bit deeper.
Yes, but challenging the income tax is a capital offense.
breaking into the country and committing fraud against citizens is o.k. because it feeds a larger goal.
The bloodthirsty statists really came out in force on this thread.
I have some direct evidence that they are more than just ordinary American citizens. Three people who work for me were at their property about 3 weeks ago to do some cleanup work from the big storm we had in April. (In case you missed it, we had hurricane force winds that did lots of damage in this state.) While there, they spoke to the Browns who gave them 2 DVDs. One dealt with not having to pay taxes, as you might expect. The other one dealt with the "REAL" reason the World Trade Center towers came down.
I can never figure the folks who think that they can change the whole world because they found some screw up in an ancient piece of Government paperwork. If these people think the 16th Amendment was not properly ratified, how about the 13-15th? They were ratified at gunpoint by State Legislatures which had been elected under military occupations.
So. It happens. Its the law of the land, and crying about it is just stupid. You aren't ever going to get the Supreme Court to rule that you can still legally enslave people in this country because there was some technical problem with how the legislatures of Mississippi and other Confederate States ratified the 13th Amendment. Trying to do so just would just make you look stupid.
They way these look people look when they try to prove that Congress never passed a law requiring people to pay income tax, and that all the trillions of dollars collected by the IRS were paid as a result of a misunderstanding.
I'm just glad they don't live in Texas, because they would surely join the Republic of Texas crowd, who think there was some paperwork foul up with the annexation of Texas, and that we are still an independent nation.
Thank you, sir. Good post; well said.
I take veetamine fo and collosium...and drink milfk.
Oh.
