Well, not so much “takes on the religion of the mother.” In the Jewish faith, children are only officially consider descendants of the Jewish lineage through the mother’s birth. So, this precept spreads official Judaism by making all the offspring of a Jewish woman de facto Jewish, even they are sired by a Christian man (or any other religion) and raised that way.

The reason? The parenthood of the mother can’t be denied, while that of the father could be questionable, and thus the lineage of the offspring through the “alleged” father’s side is open to argument.

Long story short...1428+ Hijrah years ago, the Arabian Peninsula was peopled by Jews, Christians, and idol worshippers. If Mohammed had not allowed the men to either marry or take as concubines “women of the Book,” then there would not have been a next generation...as he had only one female convert in his troupe before he launched his new career as a warlord, offering 3 days of raping and pillaging to the mercenaries he recruited to butcher farmers and seize their property.

Don’t start with me. “Missionary marriage.” I’ll retire to Bedlam.

Could it be a remnant from a time when the Semitic people were matriarchal?

From the time that God (i.e., the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) chose Abram to be the beginning of the Israelite corporate entity and nation -- to the present time -- I basically don't know of a time when Jews were matriarchal. Can you give more details of what you're talking about? It doesn't fit what information we know from the time of Abram (God changed his name to Abraham later), to this present time, for the Jews.

Here’s a little advice to the ladies who have Omar Sharif Syndrome. At the time when Elian Gonzalez was in the news and the subject was about parental kidnapping, there were 12,000 “letters of concern” sent to Muslim nations from Foggy Bottom about children taken to those countries by their Muslim fathers on behalf of the American mothers left behind.

You know..., it is interesting that there are some high profile cases of Christian women who have married Muslim men, and those men, today, are great witnesses for Christ. I’m not saying this as a way of promoting such a thing, because I think it is a grave mistake. But, it is very interesting that God has taken such a thing and turned it for the good in some cases.

One such case is (if I remember correctly; and I think I do...) a Dr. Ergun Caner, the President of Liberty University (the one associated with Dr. Jerry Falwell). I think Dr. Ergun Caner is a wonderful witness for Christ and I believe he’s the first, ever, former Muslim to be the President of a Christian university.

So, even when people do make such grave mistakes, God does have His way about these things and He can turn them for His good. But, as I said above, there’s no point in going the “wrong way” in order to “test God” and see Him turn the wrong thing into something good (as He has done in several cases).

I just had to point out that it’s not always an unmitigated disaster, as one might suppose...

Star Traveler

well it is a bit insulting for anyone esp. 5 year old muslim child to sit there and call you cheap white trash, and sit there and be tolerant. He is dead to us. Can’t tolerate that kind of behavior.

The kid has many other problems, just that one is just over the top.

I think I see your point. However:

That God can (and does) bring good out of sin is not a recommendation of sin as a means of doing good (cf. Romans 6:1ff.).

I completely understand your position. On rereading my post, it looked more like criticism than I meant for it to be.

Probably the best way to read my post was “look at me!! I know film trivia!” (even though it’s fairly well known film trivia).

Beyond any doubt, traditional Islam tends toward patriarchy.

Understatement of the week award.

As I understand it from Torah Study.....in Biblical times Jewish descent and inheritance (ethnic and civil) was patriarchical. This changed in Rabbinic times (during the Diaspora after the second fall of the Temple).

The reasons are many. Jewish women were often the spoils of war - raped - or taken against their will. This left them with children. Rather than have the children seen as outcasts (as many other societies did) they were accepted as part of the Jewish community through their mothers.

It is Judaic descent through the mother - not inheritance or other property rights. The matrilineal inheritance was a religious one and had nothing to do with property.

Judaism was still a patriarchal society (as were most socieities) even though ethnic/religious descent was through the mother.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a sin. I would avoid relationships with Muslims simply because they cannot be trusted.

A good movie to see on this topic, which is based on a true story, is "Not Without My Daughter" (1991), with Sally Field.

Interesting. I was taught that love is a decision. Infatuation is a feeling.

Every day, for almost 30 years, my husband and I wake up, deciding to love one anther for one more day. It solidifies the commitment when you are deciding to do a thing, rather than “feeling” it.

In the case of a Muslim man marrying a Christian woman, the children will be Muslim. That is the reason Islam allows this inter-marriage.

If a Christian man marries a Muslim woman, the children will be Christian. That’s why it’s prohibited.

I have great sympathy for those attempting to convince Christians not to marry Muslims, but the efforts will in almost all cases be futile. The overwhelming majority of people will marry whom they wish, regardless of the feelings of family or the dictates of their religion.

Then you'd be mistaken (1 Corinthians 7:30; 2 Corinthians 6:14).

There are ethical issues that are hard to work out.

This isn't one of them.
