CONCORD, New Hampshire, June 8, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com)
The New Hampshire State Senate passed a bill on Thursday repealing a law requiring abortionists to give parents advance notice before aborting the babies of their teenage daughters.
The bill passed the Senate with a 15-9 vote, and was passed by the State House in March with a 217-141 vote. Governor John Lynch has indicated he plans to sign the legislation.
The now doomed parental notification law placed strict requirements on abortionists when it was passed in 2003, proscribing them from performing abortions on unemancipated minors until 48 hours after their parents/guardians had received written notice.
The law, however, never took effect. Judge Joseph A. DiClerico Jr. of Federal District Court in Concord struck it down in favor of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and other groups, who claimed the bill unconstitutionally omitted an exemption for when a minors health was in danger. Pro-life advocates found such a medical exception unnecessary on the grounds that abortion is never an emergency medical procedure and a health exception provides an umbrella of excuses to circumvent the law.
The United States Supreme Court supported Judge DiClerico last year, giving instructions to see if the law could be refashioned to include a medical exception or to throw it out altogether if he saw fit.
However, a Democratic majority now controls the New Hampshire legislature and repealing the parental notification law makes its fate in the court system moot. Foes of the parental notification law are attempting to frame the victory in terms of a victory of the democratic process, pointing out that the issue has been decided by the legislature, as it should be, and not by a judge, but apparently ignoring that the issue was originally decided by the legislature in 2003 when the law was passed.
Our opponents said, If you vote for repeal, youre voting against parental notification, Dawn Touzin, vice president for public policy and governmental affairs at Planned Parenthood of Northern New England told the New York Times. We said, No, youre not. The issue is, do you want to leave it in the hands of the judge or shouldnt it be something thats decided by the legislature?
You cant get your daughter or sons ears pierced under the age of 17 without parental consent; you cant get a tattoo without parental consent, said State Senator Robert J. Letourneau, a Republican, according to the Times. To me its unconscionable that you cant give an aspirin to a child in school without parental consent, but they can have major surgery without parental notification!

Revenue must be down.
We can thank GW Bush for pushing his donor buddy Craig Benson on us. Benson was a typical bored millionaire who liked the thought of being governor but who didn’t like to actually govern. All the recent loses can be traced back to his election. A tragic day that was. The consequences have not even fully come to fruition. Ugh!
well the country is soooo much more safe now! /s
Good, abortion should be compulsory for liberals, illegal aliens and RINOS. In the end only conservatives will be left.
We’re not goign to let them:
Drink
Chew Tabacco
Smoke
Drive a car
Own a Gun
Get a piercing
Get a tattoo
Join the Military
Drop out of school
But they can get an abortion.....
Where is that in the constitution? <--rhetorical question
-—But they can get an abortion.....-—
As long as we don’t know about it.
It is sad to see New Hampshire turn into a blue state. The Pubbies had held both chambers in the State legislature since 1911. The dems took control of both the House and State delegations in 2006.
Democrats from Massachusettes have been pouring into New Hampshire to escape the hellhole they created for themselves in MA, only to create a new hellhole in NH.
Kinda like Californians moving to Nevada due to California being so f***** up. Yet they never realize it was how they voted that f****** up California in the first place.
Well, I think it would only be fair if they also allowed them to drive, smoke, pierce their ears, get tattoes, get plastic surgery, and get other surgical and medical procedures done without their parents’ permission. I mean, afterall, it is THEIR body. If they can kill their own child in their body, why can’t they do all the other listed things?
New Hampshire, how far you have fallen!
Typical liberals, no morals at all.
“We can thank GW Bush for pushing his donor buddy Craig Benson on us.”
Yes, a pro-life Catholic that was voted out in ‘04 caused this to happen half way through ‘07. /s
Hate is an ugly thing and you appear to be ate up with it.
“Hate” is such a lame excuse for everything these days...
How about ya just admit I am right and that he was a pisspoor choice for Governor who had no fire in the belly and DID NOT EVEN TRY to run for reelection, thus costing and YES contributing to the losses across the state and perhaps even trickle down nationally? At the very least Bush made a habit of installing his do nothings across the state and at great cost to the conservative movement.
“luv”...
= )
Hate is also the foundations for irrational, disconnected attempts at backwards logic. You, like so many others these days, suffer from Bush Derangement Syndrome where you cast him with the blame for anything you don’t like.
Craig Benson was elected in 2000. He initiated the parental notification bill and 3 years after he leaves office the courts strike it down yet you blame the former governor because he is a “Bush stooge”, never mind he was elected the same year Bush was.
You believe what you want. I’ll continue to trudge along here through reality. Bush has done enough to piss me off without me having to tag him with crap he had nothing to do with.
This really sums up the insanity of the pro abortion crowd.
