He saw getting reelected mayor of New Orleans as a kind of vindication it was like saying, It wasnt your fault, Ray, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Pearson Cross, said. He would immediately, I think, be the favorite for that seat.
TOPICS: Government; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: congress; corruption; jefferson; neworleans; nola
One could suspect the people in this particular voting district are suffering from some illness to have re-elected Jefferson in the first place, but if they elect Nagin, I think suspicion would have to yield to near certainty.

It’s appalling, but in a way it’s fitting, given the city’s civic history.

Interesting how I can segue from political analysis to Hollywood/supermodel filth and back to politics again... I feel like I've hardly changed the intellectual level of subject matter.

Nagin possible successor to Jefferson: (voters would have to be shortbus windowlickers)This district will do one of the following:
1) Elect someone who will vote 100% liberal and keep a low profile, or
2) Elect someone who will vote 100% liberal and embarrass the hell out of the Dims.
I would just as soon it were the second. Go Nagin!

This actually would be a good thing. Given that there’s no hope for a competent or ethical replacement, Nagin would be the perfect poster boy for the Democrat congress. And you just know he’s gonna say stupid, racist stuff every day of the week. The press would no longer be able to ignore it. Nagin’s replacement in NO couldn’t be any worse, so even NO might benefit in spite of themselves.

True!
Actually, since this district will never elect a Republican, maybe we should secretly hope for a Nagin victory. He would make his caucus look very bad and give our side propoganda points. It would be like Marion Barry being elected to Congress.

Their caucus already IS a circus sideshow. Nagin would just be another clown in the car.

I think Nagin, for all his obvious faults, would have a less liberal voting record than the other possible replacements for Jefferson and as such I would not oppose his election.
It will be interesting to see if and when Jefferson resigns, and when the special election to replace him will take place. If they hold it in November, there will be a large turnout, since state-level elections (including for the governorship) are held that day. But if he holds out longer and the special election can’t be held until early 2008, it may be a very low-turnout affair in which there might be a weird result, such as a black Republican and a white Democrat making the run-off, at which point anything could happen.

I don’t know what Ray-Ray is taking, but it’s some powerful stuff! The man is completely delusional. Our very own Papa Doc!
Who would have thought that Katrina would provide SO much entertainment value? I tell you all, this place makes the Twilight Zone seem logical.
Can Ray-Ray get elected to replace Jefferson? You betcha! He sure couldn’t get elected Governor! Jesus couldn’t get elected by the rest of the state if he were from New Orleans.
But don’t lose heart, fellow Freepers. Just think of the
entertainment value Ray-Ray will provide as a Congressman!
Comedy like this can’t be bought!

I’m not holding out any hope about any Republican ending up in a runoff or special election. We thought Rob Couhig would have a chance in the NOLA Mayor’s race, but that came to naught, ditto with the Congressional contest (where the only Republican got 13%). If I had to place a bet on who’s going to win the race, I’d say it will be Karen Carter, who gave Jefferson his closest shave since Marc Morial in 1990.
