A former Gurkha who won the Victoria Cross has told of his joy at being given the right to live in the UK. Tul Bahadur Pun, 84, who wanted to move from Nepal for medical reasons, promised to be a "credit" to Britain and expressed "deep gratitude".

He was initially told he did not have enough British ties to move but was eventually granted a visa because his case was "exceptional".

Former Rifleman Mr Pun was awarded his medal for World War II action in Burma.

I find it utterly amazing that the UK allows almost unlimited moslem immigration , and yet hassles heroes like this and Nepalese in general. UK Gov must indeed be quite mad ... At least they did the right thing in this one case !

Terrible that any British Gurkha might be denied.

After making the guy wait until he is 84. The comparative situation between the Gurkhas who have fought for the UK and other groups who have immigrated more easily is very strange.

Any Gurkha that has served in the British Military should be asked one question only. “When would it be convenient for you to take your oath of citizenship to the British Crown and thank you for your service to The Crown.”

Quite so. It's incomprehensible.

You basically have to be a member of a favored group according to socialist standards in order to gain legal residency or citizenship--just about anywhere in the West. Any qualifications from the conservative point of view may even count as demerits.

IIRC you have to put 10 years into the French Foreign Legion before you get French citizenship. I guess it’s a similar situation.

One would think that with all the sacrifices this guy and others like have have made for Britain citizenship for them would be automatic.

you would , wouldn’t you ? But this is the British .
I always have wondered what it is with this obsequiousness to muslims that they seem to have , and yet look down their snoots at most other former colonials. This started ‘after’ WW2 and Britain has been vastly changed ever since.
I grew up for a time the UK so I have a bit of a perspective.

It is a little acknowledged fact that our good old USA laid kind of the same trip on Filipinos that fought alongside the
‘stay-behind’ US forces after the Japanese took over the P.I.
After the war these hard fighting and heroic allies faced major difficulties getting USA immigration paperwork for themselves and their families . This is still a current issue (in Hawaii at least) today.
