Kerry Blew It
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 1, 2007 | James Taranto

Posted on 06/01/2007 2:39:03 PM PDT by Zakeet

In an excerpt from his new book, "No Excuses," Democratic operative Robert Shrum, who advised the 2004 Kedwards campaign, tells the story of how the lovely and talented John Edwards became Kerry's No. 2--and how John Kerry came to regret it:

Kerry talked with several potential picks, including Gephardt and Edwards. He was comfortable after his conversations with Gephardt, but even queasier about Edwards after they met.

Edwards had told Kerry he was going to share a story with him that he'd never told anyone else--that after his son Wade had been killed, he climbed onto the slab at the funeral home, laid there and hugged his body, and promised that he'd do all he could to make life better for people, to live up to Wade's ideals of service.

Kerry was stunned, not moved, because, as he told me later, Edwards had recounted the same exact story to him, almost in the exact same words, a year or two before--and with the same preface, that he'd never shared the memory with anyone else. Kerry said he found it chilling, and he decided he couldn't pick Edwards unless he met with him again. . . .

Kerry's relationship with Edwards would sour after the election. . . . When Elizabeth [Edwards] discovered she had breast cancer, John and Teresa [Heinz Kerry] reached out to help the Edwardses find the best doctors they could. . . . Kerry told me that the Edwardses simply stopped returning calls or talking to him and Teresa. Within months, Edwards started preparing for a bid in 2008. Kerry said that he wished he'd never picked Edwards, that he should have gone with his gut.

Lurch and Shrum

The war hero was excited back in 2004 because "We've got better vision, better ideas, real plans. We've got a better sense of what's happening to America--and we've got better hair."

I don’ t know that Gephardt would have been a better VP candidate but I do know that Edwards “Pretty Boy” was no help to the ticket.

Edwards “Pretty Boy”

Please refer to his correct nickname, "The Breck Girl."

Kerry's first big mistake was deciding to run...

Kerry's second big mistake was picking Edwards for the Breck (I say blechh) Vote...

Thank God we never found out what Kerry's final big mistake would have been.

A guy who wasn’t going to be reelected from his own state was somehow going to attract southern voters. Great strategy. /s

Kerry’s gut would have made a dandy VP candidate.

Our 18 year old son died in a car accident. I could not even bring myself to look at his body in his casket. I think what Edwards did (if he really did it) is bizarre.

What is double bizzare is his telling the story, twice, like it was first time. Maybe he should have said, “Stop me if you’ve heard this one...” /s

Is he very forgetful, a bold face liar, or so tramatized by the whole thing that he can’t remember if he told this life altering story exactly this way before to the same person?!?!

The sad thing is that as a Presidential candidate and a person, liar is probably the best choice, while the other posibilities suggest serious, serious personal problems.

That Kerry even picked this guy, after something like this, is a shock as well.

Gephardt was relatively pro-life, and he was an old-school lunchbox Dem, compared to the moonbats now. He may have pulled some votes away from Bush-Cheney in ‘04.

Edwards is quite a piece of work, to exploit his own son's death in such a craven way. I wonder how many thousands were the "only" person to hear that story.

And I would lay odds that it never even happened.

Kerry wanted to win. Polling indicated that Silky Pony gave him the best shot. I doubt any more serious thought went into the question after the polling data was in.

While it's true that his gut or any other inanimate object would have been a better choice, but......wouldn't have mattered. This idiotic traitor would have still lost.
