BoingBoing reader Mary Kalin-Casey says,
The new Google Maps zoom feature zooms all the way into my living room window. See cat on cat perch.
I'm all for mapping, but this feature literally gives me the shakes. I feel like I need to close all my curtains now. I'm going to look into whether it's possible for a person to have pictures of their home removed from Google Maps. Meanwhile, I'm happy to show bb readers the photo in the interest of illustrating creepy privacy violations. Heck, the whole world can see him anyway.
Link. Dang, it's so detailed, I can even see he's a tabby!
This is another reason why I love my trees, especially the huge evergreens.
hmmm, before she thinks she need to close all of her curtains, is she hot?
Not only that, but as you look South down the street, it appears an alien death ray (or maybe global warming) has wiped away a corner of the apartment building on the right.
That explains all of those UFO sightings!
Cats getting googled :)
I think it’s illegal to google a cat!
I think mine have MySpace pages.
However, I'm sure that they'll get around to covering my street as well.

I tried zooming in on my own home, and it wouldn’t get nearly that close. Maybe I did something wrong, but it would only get as close as a low flying helicopter might.
My Orange Tabby is of a temperment to kick Google’s butt. She brooks no foolishness, even from me, her buddy.
Check out the corner of Washington and Grant using “Street View” http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&layer=c&cbll=37.795144,-122.406595&cbp=1,273.618658414742,0.372247067615998,3&safe=on&ll=37.796242,-122.406074&spn=0.002331,0.004302&t=h&z=18
Pan around until you are looking north on Grant.
I read somwhere that Google was looking for volunteers to submit photos taken at street level so they could integrate that in with the satellite maps. This may be that, or a fake...I don’t think commercial sats have that kind of resolution.
It is obvious that the street level pictures were taken from the ground level. They obviously collected photos of each street that they chose to cover.
DAMN you are observant. Wow.
ISRAEL TERRORIST #1
God, I wish I was driving around taking the pictures.
According to Google, the 2001 Taurus I sold last year is still parked in my driveway.
“Would you like to google my kitty?”
“Sure, if you move that damn cat out of the way.”
(Thanks, Johnny Carson)
Are they talking about Google Earth, or Google Maps?
Anyway, some areas have higher resolution coverage than others. The part of town that I live in is fuzzy, so more or less useless.
Some of the national parks and more exotic wild areas are very high resolution - Grand Canyon and the like, it’s just awesome to be able to find *campsites* in the wilderness areas. Great for finding 4WD roads that aren’t marked or a bit cryptic.
It didn’t work with my dial up, but that is kind of creepy. At least they aren’t live pictures, though. I guess there really is no true privacy anymore. Anyone can look up your house with photos online.
These street level photos were taken over the past couple of years by Google-owned or contractor-owned vans possessing panoramic cameras. There's nothing in any of the photos that violates yours or anyone else's privacy any more than what people see just driving or walking by your residence or business. There is no violation of privacy here.
I guess you are right. It just creeps me out a bit how easy it is for someone to find a picture of your house on the internet.
My upper east side building was obviously photographed recently. A leetle creepy.
On the bright side, with the New York pictures, they apparently used a slow shutter speed and couldn’t slow down enough to get really clear pictures.

"Google spying on me? HA! I'm spying on YOU!"
Amazing. Only available in some areas though huh?
I wish witty people like Johnny we still on the tube....
Hell, I get most of my entertainment nowadays from reading funny posts like yours. Thanks for the laugh.
weird doesn’t work for me and I installed Adobe flashplayer 9 and rebooted. I keep getting the “You need to install Flashplayer 9.
Try Firefox browser.
Thanks but I use Opera but I fixed the problem. A corrupt earlier version 8.6? I had to uninstall and do a complete download instead of the update.
Looks like they have a big job ahead of them as there were only a few cities and only select areas within those cities with street view (San Fran, NYC, Denver, Miami etc.).
OK, I see the anti-Bush/Blair sign (I have to pan out and down as well as around to see it). One thing the page seems to be lacking is some kind of indicator of which direction the street camera is pointing. They ought to put a turning arrow on the main map.
Or somethng else.
I had the same problem with IE. I ended up downloading FF and it works smoothly. I will look into Opera, Thanks.
