The back-taxes provision that could trigger the blue slip came from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who continues to take heavy fire on the presidential hustings for supporting the immigration deal McCain introduced a back-taxes amendment after a conference call in which Republican bloggers mentioned reports that the Bush administration had asked that this years bill not force the very costly process of tax collection among illegal immigrants. John McCain is either really-really stupid or really-really smart.
My money is on really-really stupid.

Conservatives dont care how the bill goes down. They just want it to go away, an aide to a Senate Republican said. Retorting to Senate negotiators claim that criticism from both liberals and conservatives means their bill has bridged the political gap, the aide quipped: It just might be that everyone hates it because its really bad. Give this man a ceeegar!

Can you illuminate us as to WHY he is doing this?
Chertoff put it out there clear as day. He said that the illegals are keeping Social Security afloat. Unfortunately, all too believable.
If that is the case Congress should write an Immigration bill that includes a rider for Social Security reform -
i.e. privatization. If a bitter pill has to be swallowed then everybody should take their medicine.
Canada’s Immigration policy has been to bring in the educated middle class; our policy has been to bring in the underclass. It’s not because we are more compassionate, but because we are providing business with the labor it needs. I’m not anti-capitalist in the least; just stating the facts of life.

As much as I'm against this bill, I gotta disagree with you.
No one can make Jimmy Carter look competent.

That’s difference isn’t it. I’m looking at just about everything George has touched or been involved with dating back to at least Katrina and this includes the bungling calamity commonly known as the war in Iraq and you seem to be only looking at this major catastrophic anti-America sell-out of the American people legislation born in the Senate.

I think it’s high time for 2 constitutional amendments.
1. That ALL bills, spending or otherwise, be posted on the Internet with a link allowing public scrutiny and input before ANY vote is made in either house.
2. ALL bills passed into law (including existing laws) automatically come with a 10 year sunset clause.
That should keep these maggots in DC far too busy to dream up other ways to screw up our Country.

1. That ALL bills, spending or otherwise, be posted on the internet with a link allowing public scrutiny for a MINIMUM of 30 days before ANY vote is made in either house.

the only half-a**ed explanation Ive heard, is that some Republicans (maybe twice as delusional as democrats) think that these 12-20 million criminals-cum-voters might VOTE REPUBLICAN. Does the Z-Visa grant voting rights?

ANYTHING which puts a steak in the heart of this vampire is welcome.
Once it is dead, the Repubs have to have a conference in the wood shed with Bush and tell him ANYTHING he proposes in the next year is dead meat if he doesn’t get off the stick and ENFORCE existing alien laws and STOP the illegals coming accross the border. If they don’t stopping the bill will be meaningless as Bush will do what he has shown himslef so good at in the past - looking the other way on the subject of illegal invaders.
