Interestingly enough, this article about a soviet contender for the russian presidency, says, down towards the middle/end that they banned imports from Asia due to substandard quality.

if i die because of eating mainstream food purchased at the Safeway, then i guess that’s how i will go, bc i am sure as heck not going to turn survivalist at this point in my life. i don’t buy oddball stuff, so if i am stricken by eating something normal, light a candle for me!

along with more than 1,000 shipments of tainted Chinese dietary supplements, toxic Chinese cosmetics and counterfeit Chinese medicines.

But they're cheaper, and it's only because of Big Pharmeceuticals that we can't import these and save our elderly Billions. /sarc

Unfortunately, they're too busy trying to regulate vitamin supplements and prescription meds from Canada

China via Canada.

Hmm, maybe that’s the reason we have so much cancer here in the US. I guess the Chinese have figured out a way to kill us without actually going to war.

We all gotta go one way or another.......

I’m not getting all bent out of shape over this stuff, and I’m not going survivalist in the least. I like my veggie garden, and if I can make some money on it, more the better. But with me it is something I have been doing for years and years, not something new....just the scale of what I’m doing is new, not the principle.

I go to the local curb market and this year, for the 1st time, we are growing a garden. Not because of the tainted food but because my husband thought it would be fun. Time will tell.

I don’t see why we can’t raise a ruckus on this subject like we have the immigration fiasco. Phone calls, letters, faxes, and e-mails do get their attention.

Your husband is right, it is fun, and it is very rewarding. That first tomato, or first ear of corn on your plate tells you just how worth the trouble it is.

My “garden” is 12,000 square feet, but I am openning a roadside produce stand, so the size is justifiable. I’m growing large quantitiees of certain types of hot pepers specifically to make jelly, which I also sell.

As to making a ruckus over the tainted food stuff, I agree wholeheartedly with you, and I have made my fair share of noise. There is no reason we should be importing half the stuff we are, IMO. I can understand certain products, which are not readily available or grown here in the US, but pet food ingredients? Absolutely not. The one that gets me is the import of poultry - there is absolutely no need for this country to be importing poultry with the size of the poultry industry here.

“you pay farmers billions of dollars not to grow crops and the crops they do grow to rot.”

Why does our Gov do that? I never understood.

Checking your labels will not help, the Republican congress changed the law that required “country of origin” a couple years ago

At the time I knew where this was going and here we are.

There are fewer inspectors from the FDA now then there were 5 years ago and our ports are swamped with Chinese food stuffs.

Anyone that has been to China has seen the cesspools they call “fish farms”

And fellow Americans, 70% of ALL the fresh fish sold in this country that is rich in ocean frontage and lakes is from those cesspools.

I am sure those out of work fishermen that have invested in their own boats are really “happy” at the “bargain” prices .

The Communists used to say Capitalism will sell them the rope they will use to hang it .But I guess first they have to close all of our plants and stop our ability to feed ourself..

More FREE TRADE PLEASE..

Pork-barrel politics. Of the worst sort. In a strict sense, when your tax money goes to pay for a bridge-to-nowhere, when all is said and done there is still the bridge. In this case, our politicians are lining the pockets (and their own) of their well-connected supporters. And they do so while claiming they’re looking-out for the little guy. And they do so with impunity because anyone who opposes the giveway is demagogued as not caring for the American farmer. It’s like the perfect storm . . . vote yourself and your friends money from the Treasury and there’s not a darn thing anyone can do about it.

Complaining that "free trade" is the cause of this problem is like complaining that easier access to guns causes crime. Do you want to go down that road?

Think about it . . . you are concerned about poison in your food and you direct your ire at an economic system. You're halfway to becoming a member of the Green Party. Wouldn't it be better to harness free-market forces to address the problem? It worked for Nike and its "sweatshops."

Considering they’re our banker, we have little recourse I’m afraid. God help us if we go to war with them, which appears likely considering the longterm rhetoric and military buildup by China. I wish all of this weren’t so.
