McCain takes shot at Romney on immigration
CNN ^ | May 22, 2007 | Unknown

Posted on 05/22/2007 8:06:28 AM PDT by 3AngelaD

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful John McCain taunted rival Mitt Romney on immigration Monday, saying Romney should "get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn."

Romney's campaign responded that McCain "is having a very difficult time" defending his support of a sweeping immigration bill, which Romney opposes....Monday, McCain made fun of Romney's evolving positions on other issues...

"In the case of Gov. Romney, you know, maybe I should wait a couple of weeks and see if it changes, because it's changed in less than a year from his position before," McCain said. "And maybe his solution will be to get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn. I don't know."...

The jab squeezed in references to two past controversies: Romney's backtrack on an April comment that he'd "been a hunter pretty much all my life" -- he later said he had shot "varmints," such as rabbits, as a child...

But his spokesman, Kevin Madden, said that Romney "has been very clear that he opposes this immigration agreement, which clearly falls short of the American public's expectations."

"It seems that the candidate who brokered this flawed plan is having a very difficult time coming to terms with the political fallout that has ensued and cannot even muster up a substantive argument in favor of it," Madden said..."

McCain admitted after the 2000 Republican primary campaign that his temper might have hurt his chances to be president.

Republican strategist Ed Rollins said Tuesday that incidents such as these diminish McCain's appeal to voters who don't know him....

"When the pressure gets on, he tends to get his back up a little bit," Rollins said. "He's 70 years old. People don't want a cantankerous president."

McCain has about as much chance of getting the Republican nomination as Biden has of getting the Democrat one.

I think McCain has cooked his own presidential goose with this and the cooking thermometer has popped out. I hope someone has fun with him and baits him one of the debates and makes him scream like Howard Dean.

Wow. It's unbelievable, the outpouring of anti-McCain sentiment on the McCain website. I stopped reading about a third of the way down and in that time only read one supporter, with one weak show of support:

“get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn.”

This just shows how out of touch the man is with his own constituents. It is common knowledge that in both AZ and TX there have been many times when ranchers who own borderland have had to shoot illegals. There is nothing in the least witty in what he said.

That means co-sponsors too.

The new RINO-Republican strategy, implemented by Cherkoff, is to demonize anyone who believes in law and order by implying that they are murderers.

What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.

NO AMNESTY for Employers or Employees!

This story was posted 3 or 4 times yesterday. In another version, the story reported that in the same interview McCain even got a jab in about his "good friend," Fred Thompson :

In response to the same question from the Sun (namely: What message do you have for your GOP opponents trying to use immigration as a weapon against you?), Mr. McCain also had a few other things to say:

On Fred Thompson's attacks on the immigration compromise, Mr. McCain said: "He had a different position not that long ago." But, as he's not in the race yet, Mr. McCain said, maybe "Fred" will have time to sort that all out.

McCain must be feeling really desperate if he's even throwing low blows at his "good friend." Sad.

First the name calling began as vigilantes, moved up to bigots, and now it's murderers. It sounds like desperation to me.

It seems like it was only six months ago when the lamestream media had annointed McPain as the Republican frontrunner. It must really be getting under his skin that he's sinking in the polls, while some others are rising.

I can't wait to see what he drops to once his connection with the amnesty plan is well known by Republican voters.

McLame and Sharpton have managed to give a dead-in-the-water Romney campaign an incredible boost. Romney could actually take a lead if he keeps hammering this moronic bill (and I’m not talking about Clinton).

I don't think the campaign was ever "dead-in-the-water" and, while stupid attacks from stupid people can't hurt, Mitt got the biggest boost from winning the first debate. As more people come to know who he is and what he plans to do he will continue to rise.

Exactly. I’ve seen posters here claim that Romney’s not making much progress in the campaign. Aside from the jump he’s taken in the state polls (i.e. leads in NH, IA and MI), there’s a new Rasmussen poll out this morning where Romney just passed Thompson on the national level for the first time and is right on the heels of McCain. The poll was taken before the stupid McCain comments yesterday, so I don’t see how McCain’s gaffes are having any correlation with Romney’s rise in the polls.

McCain obviously sees Romney as a threat or he wouldn’t be resorting to personal attacks.
