Is Hannity going Downhill?
05-22-07 | CalvaryJohn

Posted on 05/22/2007 3:06:28 AM PDT by CalvaryJohn

I've just about given up on Sean Hannity. I had to turn off his show yesterday because I felt like I was hearing the same exact show for the last six months. His monologues are mind numbing and meandering. He repeats the same ten talking points and the same four litanies about ten times in an average day. If I hear him say he's a coservative in the mold of Reagan again, or- Fascism, Nazism, Tojo's Japan, or- run his pitch for the Freedom Concert talking about Lee Greenwood, Or- well you get the point. Am I the only one who thinks He's just not trying very hard, or is maybe just not up to the job of being number two to Rush? I LOVE talk radio. IMHO, Laura Ingraham has the best show on radio today. Rush is a close second, and I never miss him. Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, and even Michael Savage have great shows. Jerry Doyle was in the local station here for the afternoon drive and they preempted Hannity for him. He's got a fantastic show! I hope I don't get a lot of people PO'd at me. It's not my point. I just love excellence in broadcasting, and I don't think Sean either has it or has ever had it.

you’re right about hannity, but about jerry doyle, I find he tends to get a little bit too descriptive about things e.g food etc. Listening to Jerry is like reading a novel.

Give him a break. He is a truck driver who can at times speak. Does he have a college education? I am thinking that he may but took him some time to get it. I think his only problem is that he is arrogant.

Hannity is the most acute case, but frankly I think most of talk radio is in a rut. The issues are immigration and Iraq. The candidates are the same cast of clowns. Today’s show pretty much rehashes yesterday’s, and will be rehashed tomorrow.

I don’t remember the last time any talk radio host said anything that surprised me. Anything that smacked of an original thought or a fresh approach to a problem. Anything that couldn’t have been scripted months ago. Frankly, the best thing that could happen to talk radio would be for Hillary Clinton to be elected president — then they’d have some fresh material, even if every couple years one of them called her a rude name and got fired.

The good news is podcasts. A lot of colleges put their lectures on line. So do non-profit radio hosts. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist these days to load up a cheap MP3 player with dozens of hours of thoughtful content before a road trip to make the miles fly by.

I always thought Sean mainly appealed to the younger crowd, hence his repetitiveness. You have to drill these kids in fundamentals. I hope his ratings stay up.

Actually he is a college dropout.

That says a lot and I am not trying to be too mean, but if you can’t finish something you start that is not a good thing. When I walked into George Washington University on the first day for my MBA, I absolutely hated it, but for some reason I kept with it and finished. I am just one of those people who have intense guilt if I don’t finish something. Could be why I am still in the Navy for 20 years and counting...I think I am waiting for them to tell me to pack my bags. lol.

I stopped listening 3 months ago and listen to Beck during his time slot and agree with most of your points. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something missing there.

Laura: 9-12
RUSH: 12-3
Beck: 3-6
Levin/Savage: 6-8

That’s my talk radio day. I agree with you also about Laura, though I’m not sure, in my view, she’s #1. Perhaps #2, but it will take a lot to unseat Rush from #1.

Hannity appeals to women and young people. These are the two weakest demographics for the Republican party. Because he appeals to these two groups, he is performing a valuable service to attract these people to the conservative movement.

The solution for people who don’t like Hannity is to turn him off and let him do his job as he sees fit. He is, after all, on 550 radio stations.

I agree with all your points but I give him a pass because of his Freedom Concerts and his support of the military. I discovered early on he is not quick on his feet and is too much of a lapdog when it comes to certain people - such as Newt, Rudy, McCain. He even sucks up to libs and Stalinists such as Lieberman and Sharpton. But I also look at who his friends are - Ollie North, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter - and combined with his work for the troops, I give him a pass.

Don’t listen to Hannity much, but I always find it amusing that the talk show hosts talk about subjects covered on FR several days ago. Often parroting FR’s overall take on the situation.

"I've just about given up on Sean Hannity. I had to turn off his show yesterday because I felt like I was hearing the same exact show for the last six months"

Really? It seems more like 6 years. He never changes his ideas and basically ignores all outside opinions. He shouts down listeners who start bringing up new facts or points he hasn't considered, and falls back to repeating the same slogans he has been using since 2001. He is in lock step with Bush on EVERY ISSUE, including this immigration crap. He tries to justify every action by the administration...Party before principle, always. Unlike Rush, I find him extremely tedious.

I stopped listening because of his so called “balance”, which consists of two Liberals for every conservative. If I want to hear liberal lies I can tune to CNN or the MSM. I listen to talk radio to be uplifted, not to hear 60% liberals. That being said, I do admire him for his support of the troops.

Good for you. I am retired Navy. Got out after 18 years - in the last group the Clinton DOD let out early. I did four years in the navy, got out in 80. Started going to community college in 81 and dropped out in 82, which is when I went back in the Navy. I figured I was going to stay in until they told me to leave. But then I got married in 90. My wife and her family are very high class people - all college educated. I returned to college in 92, starting with PACE course on the ship. I retired from the Navy in 96 and continued with school. Graduated as an English Major in 2003 from UMUC.

I guess my point is I try to stick with things too, though more in a round-about way. I'm not in Bill Gates status but when I compare myself to my siblings and family origins, I consider myself successful. A high school grad, retired military, college grad, and this December will be 17 years married.

I’ve never been a big fan of Sean’s. That being said, I was a huge fan of Rush’s in the late 80’s and early 90’s. As a matter of fact talk radio in general. Before Rush came to my market, I would listen on staticy stations miles away to hear his show. I was thrilled when he came to my market.

Now I seldom listen, not only to Rush but to talk radio in general. Yes it was more fun when the opposition was in office. Then it became spinning for the latest republican gaffe or protesting the President was about to do something, then the day after he did it explaining how smart it was and how his enemies underestimated him.

But you’re right, I’m so tired of hearing the same talking points, the same catch phrases, the same always hold to your principals.....oh, well now it’s time to rationalize what’s best.

Talk radio has found the formula to pander to the LCD of radio listeners and stoke it every day.

hannity went completely off my radar when he slammed a priest on his show. The epitomy of arrogance and disrespect; one would hardly expect it from an atheist, but a professing Catholic?

Big Contradiction Alert.

I am slowly coming to the same conclusion. I think Sean is going through a rough patch in creativity, whether it is permanent or not shall remain to be proven. My favorite as of late is a fellow I listen to on Sirius satellite radio by the name of Andrew Wilkow. Seems to be informed and gets very direct about the topics.

Hannity's Freedom Concert, in my opinion, is his finest hour. As disenchanted as I am with him, I will be contributing some serious dollars to that cause, as I do to USO, DAV, Operation A/C. We can never allow the left to inflict another Vietnam reaction on our warriors again. That said, I agree with you on the rest.

When my wife and I first heard him as a sub for Rush years ago we both commented that Rush had done his usual outstanding job of prividing substitute hosts. (I don't think Rush knows that in his real radio job on WJR AM Paul W. Smith is an opportunist panderer to the democrats.) I own two homes, Sean's show is the only talk radio show from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM that aspires to being conservative in one of the areas. I listen as long as I can take it, but those periods of time are becoming shorter and shorter. I've had it with Rooty, his "good friends" MeMeMeCain, Rangel, and THE convicted liar Sharpton although he's toned those accolades way down of late it seems.

I know exactly what you mean. 22 years ago when I was less than a month from graduating from an Indiana vocational school with an associates degree, I was talking with a friend of mine who had dropped out of Ball State University after 2 years. When he heard me putting down my education and degree, he told me that the degree was important and that it shows the world that I can start something and finish it. He felt that his two years at Ball State were wasted because he came out of it with nothing. On the other hand, you have to give Hanity credit for turning himself into a success without a degree. He's a great example of what a person can still do in the USA.
