National Guard To Patrol PATH Trains
NBC News ^ | May 11, 2007 | WNBC News

National Guard troops, some of them armed, will for the first time help patrol the PATH trains, Homeland Security officials told NewsChannel 4. The patrols will start Monday. This past summer, investigators uncovered a plot to bomb the path trains.

Officials said there's no new specific threat, but as a precaution a surge of armed National Guard troops will begin random patrols at path stations next week.

"You might see a National Guardsman walking along the platform with a Port Authority police office," said New York state Deputy Secretary for Public Safety Michael Balboni. "You might even see bomb-sniffing dogs."

This security surge for the PATH uses a pop-up approach -- soldiers appearing randomly at stations all along the system.

"Just trying to protect the infrastructure by placing a guard doesn't always work," said Balboni. "We need to make sure we have the ability to continually change things. This is going to be a really good deterrent for someone who would want to do harm to the system."

These increased patrols come as the governors of New York and New Jersey pledged earlier this year to better coordinate security measures. The pilot program will cost $200,000 a month to deploy some 40 National Guard troops at 13 stations.

The effort mirrors a program underway at New York's Penn Station and Grand Central Station.

A couple of weeks ago, PA police officers were shining flashlights into the junctures between the cars for every train that pulled into the Pavonia station. It seems hard to believe that aren’t activing on specific information.

Sadly, Jersey City is full of the Islamic fundamentalist vipers. The slaughter of an entire family of Egyptian Coptic Christian origin has to my knowledge never yieldded the Islamic killers. The father was publicly fighting with Mulims. And then he and his entire family had their throats cut at home.

Jersey City has hosted the 93 WTC bombers as well. The government knows the threat. It is on the top ten of targets for Islamic fanatics.

Our luck just can’t hold out indefinitely.

I hate to say it, but I suspect these National Guard troops will probably be about as useful as the ones Bush sent to pretend to guard the border. They made a pretty picture. Only trouble was, they weren’t armed, and they weren’t allowed to shoot back when shot at.

Much depends on how well these men are trained in what to look for, and what the rules of engagement are.

Amazing that the troops will be armed, isn’t it? Can you imagine sending NG forces into patrolling anything in the 50’s without their being armed? But the writer emphasizes that “some” will be armed. How times have changed.

National guard troops make $60,000 a year? I would have thought you could have gotten officers at that rate.

Officials said there's no new specific threat

The action they're taking does not jib, to me, with that statement.

What is a PATH train?

PATH is Port Authority Trans-Hudson, formerly known as the Hudson & Manhattan when it was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad many long decades ago. It runs from Jersey City and Newark to downtown Manhattan with a longer extension that goes up 6th Ave. as far as 33rd St. in midtown.

It depends what you mean by “armed.” Also it depends what the rules of engagement are.

I remember doing sentry duty in the army many years ago in the Southwest, outside a missile testing base. I carried a rifle, which no doubt looked intimidating, but I was never issued any ammo for it.

I’m not saying that this is what will happen, but it’s not all that unlikely.

I did learn that she definitely is going to the location near you — very exciting. She was planning to start traveling yesterday so I’m thinking that while she’s in transit, she’ll have her hands full. I won’t forget to follow up, and I surely will get the info to you asap when I have it. Thanks for checking.

You're right that Jersey City is full of Islamic fundamentalist vipers. A lot of the plotting for the first attack on the World Trade Center (in 1993) took place in a mosque in J.C.

But there was no Islamic connection to the horrific crime you mentioned. It turned out those murders were not committed by Muslim enemies of the Coptic family. Instead it was a creepy, druggy tenant who lived upstairs or next door. I don't think he's come to trial yet, but the evidence is overwhelming that he did it.

Well I’ll have to look into this now. As I recall, the family was bound and they were murdered in typical Islamic fashion.

And the father as I recall was told to be quiet or face death.

And don't forget that September 11 is Coptic New Year's Day; the feast of El-Nayrouz.

http://www.missionstclare.com/english/people/sep11o.html

From the link:

Today is the beginning of the blessed Coptic year. Let us keep it a holy day with all chastity and purity. Let us refrain from evil deeds and start a new acceptable life. The Apostle Paul said: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation" (2 Corinthians 5:17, 18). The Prophet Isaiah also said: "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Isaiah 61:1, 2) and the Prophet David said: "You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance" (Psalm 65:11).
