Thompson comes to Tampa; has little to say
My Fox-Tampa Bay ^ | 5/10/07 | Staff

TAMPA - Former U.S. Senator and actor Fred Thompson could shake up the Republican race for President. Thompson discussed his own possible White House Thursday night in Tampa.

"I think in my case, a man has to fit the times," said Thompson.

"I've got an idea of what the time frame is, but I'm not talking about it much now," he said.

Thompson said he is concerned that the campaign is starting too early, but said there would be plenty of time for candidates with the proper experience and best ideas to enter the race.

Thompson focused his message on government efficiency and accountability. He said our government has grown dysfunctional to the point of compromising national security.

"We've got computers that don't talk to each other, departments that can't pass an audit, and people who are in over their heads," said Thompson.

In 2000, Thompson supported Senator John McCain's presidential campaign. Now he may run against him.

"Nothing has changed about John, as far as I know," said Thompson, "but I've changed," he said.

Thompson would not say how he would change foreign policy. He wouldn't discuss Florida's insurance crisis and the call for a national disaster fund. He also would not say whether Florida made the correct decision by moving its presidential primary date in defiance of national party leaders.

Thompson said he won't discuss specifics unless or until he chooses to run. He said he has many friends in the Tampa Bay area. He spent Thursday night at a charity fundraiser for the Hillsborough County Bar Association.

Suppose someone were to offer you a job that required you to move to Hong Kong but to do this you would have completely to change the course of your life.

And what is wrong with that? Modern dress is far too focused on utility. Character, expression and elegance are a lost art. I for one would love to see people dressing in different time period styles.

Just like he did today regarding the 2nd Amendment.

I support Fred, mostly because of the content in his radio addresses and his voting record.....I want him to run and win. However, he’s used these lines before - “a man has to fit the tmes” etc. and I’m getting worried that his day has passed. And I DO mean worried, because I think a younger more vigorous Fred would wipe the floor with Hillary.

Don't get me wrong. Fred Thompson makes more sense than anybody so far. But just why does anybody need to raise money for a bar association? I know what local lawyers pay to bar associations, which is plenty to get by on till next year's dues. I'm wondering what kind of charity this was exactly.

Modern dress is far too focused on utility.

And this differs how from last century, or the century before, or the eons before that? Before you answer, consider the goods available, and heating and cooling of oneself. Modern dress has always been about utility, except for a few flashy nobles. Of course, the current century, and last century, has completely upset the "utility" notion since we have indoor climate control. The last hundred or so years is the only period that "utility" was not an issue.

You know — if I were Fred and enjoyed the world that he is part of — I doubt that I would want to give it up to run the US government (with all the stress, hatred, and angst). It has to be a total drag compared to dinner at Spago and all the other excitement that Hollywood has to offer.

Lightening struck, or didn’t you notice? Didn’t happen when Hunter announced, and Hunter is a good man. Something similar happened to Perot back in 1992. You can’t predict this stuff. John Kennedy’s moment came when he lost the Vice-presidential nomination in 1956. Reagan’s came with his concession speech in 1976. The the cases of Kennesy and Reagan, the contrast with the winners of the nomination—Kefauver in 1956 and Ford in 1976, it produced immediate buyer’s remorse. Then of course there was a long period of building on that moment. Thompson has similarly been launched. BUT he must not only stay afloat, he must steam ahead.

How old are you?

The reason I ask is because the older we get the less we care about the glitz.

I have had so many dinners and wine & dine affairs at top spots all over that I no longer get excited about them. What’s become important is healthy food and good company.

With someone like FDT who has a command of law and history, the Presidency must be an attractive place that he wants to explore and see if it’s right for him. I think he is so right for it, it will fit him to a tee.

I am sure it is a worthwhile charity.

You're the second poster that is sure of this regardless that the author of this article didn't say which charity. It's ok that you have no idea, and its ok these reporters are mum about what is being supported by what candidate? Maybe we would fully support this charity, but for some reason whoever wrote this article isn't saying what charity. Even if its worthwhile, in your terms, it's ok if whoever is reporting about Fred Thompson is just obscure about whatever Fred Thompson is supporting. You might be sure whatever IT is is worthwhile, because you read good stuff in the past, but you think every voter is on the same page with you? This would mean nothing to most voters. He appeared at a local bar meeting, so what?

Lawyers have a rich history of providing support and assistance to the needy. Consistent with that tradition, the Hillsborough County Bar Foundation was established a few years ago as the charitable arm of the Bar Association to support programs and projects that help poor and disadvantaged individuals, particularly relating to their legal needs. Last year, the Bar Foundation set a new record for providing financial assistance to local charities. Substantial contributions were made to Voices for Children (guardian ad litem program), Bay Area Legal Services, and the After-Hours Injunction for Protection Program of the Spring of Tampa Bay.

The funds contributed to these organizations were raised almost exclusively through the Bar Foundation’s only real fund raiser for the year-the Foundation’s Special Event Dinner. Sheila McDevitt and her committee did such a great job last year that many have asked how we could possibly replicate and improve on that success. Although this does pose a dilemma, this year’s Special Event committee has accepted the challenge and has gotten off to an early start in planning an evening that you will not want to miss.

We already have secured the Marquis Sponsor for next year’s event, which will be The Bank of Tampa. In addition, TECO Energy has agreed to participate as a Premier Sponsor. Additional sponsors and support are actively being solicited and are still needed.

We have also enlisted the expertise and pro bono support of Schifino Lee Advertising & P.R. to help us create a new look and “brand” for our program. Through their talented efforts, we are delighted to announce that the Foundation’s signature event will now be presented annually as the Law and Liberty Dinner.

The 2007 Law and Liberty Dinner will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay on Courtney Campbell Causeway and will feature famed American lawyer, actor and former Senator, Fred D. Thompson. First elected to the United States Senate in 1994, Mr. Thompson served in that body until 2002. At the end of his second term, he joined the cast of the long-running NBC series Law & Order, playing District Attorney Arthur Branch. Senator Thompson has also appeared in numerous motion pictures including The Hunt for Red October, Cape Fear, In the Line of Fire, and Die Hard II. A compelling story teller, Senator Thompson will leverage his political background and experience to provide attendees with a candid and engaging look at politics, life in Hollywood, and current affairs.

Please make plans now to support the Foundation’s Law and Liberty Dinner May 10, 2007. we hope that you will join us and our Marquis Sponsor, The Bank of Tampa, as a corporate or individual sponsor to help ensure another wonderful evening. Please support the Foundation’s mission to expand access to the legal system for those in need. With your help, this will be a remarkable evening. For additional program sponsorship information, contact HCBF Executive Director Darlene Kelly at (813) 221-7774.

You could go to their website and ask them if you really want to know.

Why should I have to ask them? A reporter reported on this. Whoever wrote this article really should have reported this. Most local bars are entirely mercenary and if this bar association wasn't then the reporter, for some blatant reason, left out exactly for what charity Thompson appeared to raise money.

Again, Thompson is the only candidate of late that makes sense, I am on his side. But nobody is questioning why WHICH CHARITY was left out of this article.

But I think Fred is supporting Fred. If he did this Pro Bono then he is still supporting Fred because Pro Bono work is deductible.

Now the bar association FOUNDATION supports a lot of different charities. Sort of like United Way. Go look at their web site if you want to know what charities the bar association FOUNDATION was raising funds for.

I totally agree with you. I have a huge amount of respect for Fred Thompson and his views align with mine probably the most of any other candidate, but we need a candidate with fire...and I just am not seeing that he really wants the job all that badly. I think he would make a good (not great) president, but I just don’t see him as someone who would inspire others. A candidate needs that ability to sell him/herself to the “mushy middle” American voters.
