NEW YORK (May 4) -- One-third of Americans say they have a negative view of Katie Couric , her personal popularity lagging behind rivals Charles Gibson and Brian Williams just as her evening news program trails in the ratings.
The Gallup Poll survey released Thursday found that 51 percent of Americans said they had a positive view of Couric, who jumped from NBC's "Today" show to CBS last fall.
The poll found Gibson and Williams essentially running neck-and-neck in terms of popularity. ABC's Gibson was viewed positively by 62 percent of TV viewers and NBC's Williams by 59 percent, but that difference is within the sampling's margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
That also mirrors the competition between the anchors in the television ratings. Gibson began the evening job last spring, and trailed Williams consistently for the rest of 2006. But in the past three months ABC's "World News" has logged the most viewers during eight weeks, while NBC's "Nightly News" won four weeks.
CBS recently hired former CNN and MSNBC president Rick Kaplan as "CBS Evening News" executive producer in an attempt to recover from Couric's stumbling start.
She's handicapped by the number of people - 29 percent in this poll - who explained their negative opinion by saying they simply "don't like her," Gallup said. Once one of the most popular personalities in TV news, her negative ratings crept up during her final years at "Today."
At least people know who she is. Only 13 percent of the respondents said they had never heard of Couric, compared to 19 percent each for Gibson and Williams.
Gibson (16 percent) and Williams (18 percent) had much smaller negative ratings. Some in the news business believe the amiable Gibson has improved ABC's ratings because he's easier to listen to in a period of bad news.
The Gallup poll found 13 percent of the people who said they didn't like Williams citing "too much negative reporting." That explanation wasn't offered by people who said they didn't like Couric or Gibson.
The Gallup survey was based on telephone interviews with 1,007 adults conducted from April 23 to 26. In questions where respondents were asked to explain their negative opinions, the margin of sampling error ranged from 5 to 9 percentage points.

Gallup is another old failed organization that just won’t go away.
I still remember a giggly Katie Couric interviewing a giggly Hillary Clinton on the Today Show.
So.......if Hillary wants to increase her own popularity, she should not get together with Katie Couric.
That’s nothing. Katie Couric hates 100% of America (well, except for our money).
CBS should replay her Today Show interview(s) with Bush 41. That would educate America further -- and bump her negatives more properly high.
Make that on third and 2.
I hate and despise her 2 times over.
Yes and yes. :P
She’s bad and biased... Gibson and Williams are just biased.
Well, my poll in the Bigg Red household finds 100% of respondents despise Couric — and Gibson and Williams.
Maybe CBS can bring back Walter Cronkite.
One-Third of Americans Dislike Katie Couric, the other two-thirds say Katie Who?
One-third plus one.
You have a smart family!
...Two-thirds weren't asked.
The other third.
The other TWO thirds.
“1/3 of Americans dislike Katie Couric” =
“2/3 of Americans don’t know her yet”
62% of Americans believe or like Gibson, when he can make up “facts” concerning the VA Tech murders. Wow.
Or Captain Kangaroo...
She is like a once stellar (all in the eye of the beholder) quarterback that will not admit that they should have retired several teams ago.
One third of CBS viewers think Katie Couric is Walter Cronkite.
Now we turn to Hillary Clinton. She has an UNfavorable rating by 51% of all Americans. Still, the serious money in politics is saying that she will take the Democrat nomination, and she might yet be elected President.
What can we conclude from this? I conclude that the AP has no dog in the Couric fight, and is willing to see her descend into Connie Chung territory. On the other hand, the AP wants to see Hillary in the White House.
Did I miss anything?

Haven’t they seen her colon? What are they thinking?

Did she have a face lift?
Yup, I find it disturbing that Intrade has the witch way out front with Osama Obama behind her and ahead of the first Repub, the gun controller abortionist Rudy.
May the money traders be wrong.
I'm sick of the circus already. Wake me up in the spring of 2008.
Katie is ok as a little girl on the news program, that sits and giggles while the adults talk, but as an anchor she sucks.
1/3
I thought she was the chearleader who should have quit several teams ago?
Clinton/Couric in ‘08!
Similarities are sticking. Both get their 15 minutes of fame and dont know when to quit.
The Gallup Poll survey released Thursday found that 51 percent of Americans said they had a positive view of Couric.
they obviously only polled New Yorkers
Remember a few months back, one of the CBS news videos failed, and she had no backup and was like a deer in the headlights. She just stood there, looking stupid and lost, when at the least she could have gotten back behind her desk and pretended to take Important Notes. She's a 15 Million-dollar-a-year, total lightweight. And a leftist Jerk.
The guy who should be out on his ass is Les Moonves. He’s the bonehead who pushed the incompetent Couric into the Anchor chair.
One-third of all. Does that mean two-thirds of Americans are idiots?
I am sick of hearing about senators, pundits, and news anchors.
Most of them are stunningly clueless about what’s important to us out here in ‘flyover country’. They keep saying “the American people want’ such and such...
What we want is to win the war and then bring most of the boys home. We understand that a presence will be needed for the long haul.
Semper Fi,
http://www.conservativeusa.org/DCRepresentation.htm
"...Article I, Section 2 states that "The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States . . . ." It also says that "No person shall be a Representative who shall not . . . be an Inhabitant of that state in which he shall be chosen" and that "Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several states which may be included within this union . . . ." The same section guarantees that ". . . each State shall have at least one Representative . . ." and provides that "When vacancies happen in the representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies."
Article I, Section 4 also recognizes only states when it says that "The Times, Places, and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature . . . ."
The Fourteenth Amendment continues in this vein, establishing that "Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers . . . ."
The District of Columbia is not a state, and cannot be granted representation as if it were a state by any authority in the Constitution. Congress recognized this in regard to the electoral college when it used a constitutional amendment (the Twenty-third) to grant the District electoral votes equal to those of the smallest state.
HR 5388 must, on constitutional grounds, be rejected. The actual merits of representation for the District may be debated if a constitutional amendment is offered, but the unconstitutionality of this bill requires a negative vote by those who have sworn "to support this Constitution" (Article VI, paragraph 3)......
Methinks the Founders knew what kind of socialist cesspool DC would become and were against letting the cretins have representation.
The other 2/3 never tried her.
You and me both, Mister.
That's why I say wake me up during primary season, next year. This is a friggin' Clown Show.
her and hilllereee are cut from the same cloth. Both think they are better than everyone else. They need to think again.
You don’t believe the constitution is a living, breathing document that can be changed by a judges whim to fit modern social(ist) needs? I’m so sad that Katie wasn’t able to educate you, you’re still stuck in a bigoted mindset believing that those dead slave owning white males actually meant what they wrote!I’m sure when Meredith does the news you’ll learn how to properly think correctly.
Can’t stand her face anywhere.
Don’t like Charlie Gibson. Would rather have no
news than ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC!
