The Moment a Teenage Girl was Stoned to Death for Loving the Wrong Boy
Last updated at 18:28pm on 3rd May 2007
A 17-year-old girl has been stoned to death in Iraq because she loved a teenage boy of the wrong religion.
As a horrifying video of the stoning went out on the Internet, the British arm of Amnesty International condemned the death of Dua Khalil Aswad as "an abhorrent murder" and demanded that her killers be brought to justice.
Reports from Iraq said a local security force witnessed the incident, but did nothing to try to stop it. Now her boyfriend is in hiding in fear for his life.
Miss Aswad, a member of a minority Kurdish religious group called Yezidi, was condemned to death as an "honour killing" by other men in her family and hardline religious leaders because of her relationship with the Sunni Muslim boy.
The teenager was dragged outside by 8 or 9 men and stoned for half an hour until she died. Her boyfriend is now in hiding in fear for his life
They said she had shamed herself and her family when she failed to return home one night. Some reports suggested she had converted to Islam to be closer to her boyfriend.
Miss Aswad had taken shelter in the house of a Yezidi tribal leader in Bashika, a predominantly Kurdish town near the northern capital, Mosul.
A large crowd watched as eight or nine men stormed the house and dragged Miss Aswad into the street. There they hurled stones at her for half an hour until she was dead.
The stoning happened last month, but only came to light yesterday with the release of the Internet video.

this, LITERALLY, makes me sick to my stomach..:(
Obviously this is leftist propaganda, as we know that Islam is a religion of peace and just as soon as they are given democracy and economic prosperity they will be just like us.
These were Yezidis that did this, not Muslims.
Would someone please explain to me how or why an American woman would convert to this evil, ‘religion’?
There is something wrong with those people over there...It has to be genetic. I honestly do not see any reason for them to exist. What do they contribute to mankind?
“What a bunch of barbaric pigs.”
They are truly disgusting. The poor girl absolutely did NOT deserve such a horrendous death, but her MURDERERS do.
The growth of republican influences in Iraq will help to affect actual civilization.
Actually you are only partly correct. It is actually Right Wing propaganda. We on the Left agree that Islam is a religion of peace. However, Democracy is not the answer. Each society must find it's own cultural justice. The reason that Muslims kill each other like this is because of American imperialism and Zionism.
Which brings up the question, what comes first - the chicken or egg? Is it the just society that sees the value of democracy and makes it so, or the democracy that causes a just society? I think almost anyone would say it’s the first situation. Look at what is going on in Turkey today, and I think you’ll see that Ataturk realized this about his own people.
Think about it: it took a half hour for her to pass; they watched her try to get up only to be kicked back down and stoned again. Add to all this the indignity of being stripped and laughed at; this is honorable death??
Good talking points, but it makes no sense. Please explain how American and “Zionist” influence has created this form of babarism. It has certainly been around longer than “American Imperialism.”
I was responding to a blatantly sarcastic post with even greater sarcasm.
Well....THE ROP at its best, huh?
you might want to add a /sarc at the end of such a blatantly sarcastic post.
Some folks might think you actually mean what you say.
Imagine what would happen to 8 or 9 men HERE who dragged a girl out of her home?
What a bunch of cowards. Eat lead!
Some folks did. See post #12. I should use a "sarc tag," but it just seems like an insult to the reader, like they can't figure it out.
Imagine if it was a "gay" guy they did this to. Then it would be a hate crime!
lol unfortunately with all of the angst on FR lately folks don’t read into it that deep. They tend to engage mouth before starting brain and it ends up making them feel sheepish.
this is terrible! Does no one have a consciene anymore! HOw sad, truly sad!
Yeah...what a bunch of real men....collectively kick and stone a defenseless 17 yr old female. OOOOOOhhhhh such bravvvveeee stroooonnngggg meeeeen.
Cognitive dissonance allert!
You say "Democracy is not the answer" and then immediately follow "each society must find it's (sic) own cultural justice." Who decides? The people (democracy) or their rulers (oligarchy)?
The reason that Muslims kill each other like this is because of American imperialism and Zionism.
Oh, I see. Jokes on me.
I read a while back that mainstream Muslims (to the extent there is such a group) consider Yezidis to be devil worshippers.
I am not planning to watch the video, but presumably these “men” got filmed doing murder, and people know who they are, film or no film. They need to be rounded up, sent to jail, and tried for murder. If there is no consequence for this kind of crime, it will continue.
Heck, in Sharia law, a man is suppose to beat his wife as not to show bruises (back and back of legs) with the chosen of 3 different size rods (staffs or sticks) that fits her perceived offense as to 'correct her mistake'.
Women are like dogs in many cultures, sad but true.
These were Yezidis that did this, not Muslims.
Although the Yazidis speak Kurdish, their religion shows strong influence from archaic Levantine and Islamic religions.
Religion -o- peace ping
The difference between the Yezidi religion and Islam is as big as the difference between Islam and Christianity. Islam “reveres” Jesus too (as does the Yezidi religion), but that hardly makes it a Christian religion in any meaningful sense of the word. The Yezidis and Muslims have been enemies as far back as anyone can discern.
The Yezidis are very tribal and exclusive. Like Zoroastrianism, with which Yezidi beliefs share some origins, the Yezidis do not accept converts (though apparently they did in the past). So unlike the Islamists, they are hardly out to take over the world and make everybody convert to their religion. They have their own religious scriptures but don’t regard them as any sort of comprehensive “word of God”; the Koran is not on their radar screen. Their holy day of the week is Wednesday, and their annual religious observation days have no connection to the Islamic ones (though some coincide with Zoroastrian ones). They recite their prayers in the direction of the sun, not Mecca, and they practice baptism.
A couple of interesting (and sourced) notes near the end of the Wikipedia entry:
In her memoir of her service in an intelligence unit of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Iraq during 2003 and 2004, Kayla Williams (2005) records being stationed in northern Iraq near the Syrian border in an area inhabited by “Yezidis”. The Yezidis were Kurdish-speaking, but did not consider themselves Kurds, and expressed to Williams a fondness for America and Israel. She was able to learn only a little about the nature of their religion: she thought it very ancient, and concerned with angels. She describes a mountain-top Yezidi shrine as “a small rock building with objects dangling from the ceiling”, and alcoves for the placement of offerings. She reports that local Muslims considered the Yezidis to be devil worshippers.
In an October 2006 article in The New Republic, Lawrence Kaplan echoes Williams’s sentiments about the enthusiasm of the Yezidis for the American occupation of Iraq, in part because the Americans protect them from oppression by militant Muslims and the nearby Kurds. Kaplan notes that the peace and calm of Sinjar is virtually unique in Iraq: “Parents and children line the streets when U.S. patrols pass by, while Yezidi clerics pray for the welfare of U.S. forces.”
Here’s an interesting blog-type article by a guy who went to check them out in person:

What gets me is the fact that these barbaric “defenders of the ROP” actually took the time to videotape this horrific act. So much for arguing that this was an act of “righteous anger” in defense of their god or religion. This was totally premeditated and cowardly.
Ask those that did the stoning.
I love how FReepers:
1) tried to pin this on Islam.
2) made the argument that Yezidi is a branch of Islam, therefore see point number one.
Yezidi is older than Christianity. It was pre-Islam. What it did with Muhammad and other Islamic figures is the same as how Hinduism co-opted Islamic figures and Jesus for their own, saying these men are incarnation of their Hindu deities. Is Hinduism an offshoot of Islam? They’ll probably make these allegations sooner or later if a Hindu lunatic extremist goes off the deep end and throw acid at girls’ faces for “indecency”.
I guess we have our own code of PC and “Minute of Hate” rallies.
“EMMANUEL ABDULLAH! EMMANUEL ABDULLAH!!”
You said — “1) tried to pin this on Islam.”

Don’t worry, the religio-fanatical-governmental idealogy of Islam has more than enough evil of its own. We don’t need to add someone else’s evil to it. In fact, you could add another thousand murders to Islam and you would never be able to tell any difference. Another 1,000 dead to Islam would be like adding an eyedropper of water to the ocean; how could you ever tell the difference?
Ugh.., those pictures are just..., I don’t know, no words...
It’s a shame, a young girl’s live cut down at that age.
WTF?
“What do they contribute to mankind?”
Bodycount.
Oh, we definitely have "Two Minutes Hate" here. We call them "400 Post Catholic/Muslim/Illegal/RudyMcRomney/Abortionist/RoyalNavy Bashing Threads", but they accomplish the same purpose. ;)
If that is the case, then why are so many people trying to accuse Islam of this act?
The willingness to jump to conclusions is very telling.
Nuts. At least Big Brother only have Goldstein. We really shouldn’t be doing these types of things, otherwise we just turn into the hateful, anti-freedom liberals.
If that is the case, then why are so many people trying to accuse Islam of this act?
The willingness to jump to conclusions is very telling.
Which is easily answered. What comes first, the sound of the bullet entering the head and then the bullet exiting the back of the head of the men responsible for this horrendous act of peace.
You said — “If that is the case, then why are so many people trying to accuse Islam of this act? The willingness to jump to conclusions is very telling.”

Well, don’t go too far with that one!
While it’s clear that many people just did a “cursory reading” of the article and put “two plus two” together (in their minds) and placed it upon the Muslims — it doesn’t mean that this religio-fanatical-governmental idealogy of Islam is not to blame for the 99% of everything else that it is responsible for.
The whole point for clearing up the matter of exactly who (what group) was doing this is to — *not give an excuse* — for those *inevitable* Muslim-whacko-apologists who are out there. So, the whole point of the matter is to keep that evil idealogy of Islam with its “feet to the fire” for all its evil deeds, legitimately-defensible and assertive manner for all that it has done.

Video Captures Stoning of Kurdish Teenage Girl
Posted GMT 4-25-2007 23:16:3
Mosul, Iraq According to the Kurdish website Jebar.info up to 1000 men from the Yezidi Kurdish community of Mosul killed a teenager whos only crime was running away to marry a Muslim man whom she loved and converting to his religion.
For four months the girl had been given shelter by a local Muslim Sheik. It was reported that in the last few days her family persuaded her to return home, convincing her that she had been forgiven by her parents and relatives for her mistake.
In a short mobile video clip which appears to have been taken by locals at seen of the murder, the girl is seen being ambushed on her way home by a group of up to 1000 men who were waiting for her to return; the men killed her in the most brutal way possible, by throwing large stones on her head. The following clips show that while she is alive and crying for help she is taunted and kicked in her stomach until someone finishes her off by throwing a large stone on her face.
Warning: the following videos (RealPlayer) show graphic and disturbing images:
video 1
video 2
video 3
video 4
video 5
video 6
[note from Star Traveler: these clips are also the ones I included in the previous post]
From the clips it appears that the girl was first stripped naked to symbolize that she had dishonored her family and her Yezidi religion. She is lying on the road naked while her smashed face is covered with blood and still breathing.
According to the website and footage from the clip a number of armed local police officers were present who in fact helped the crowd to kill the woman rather than preventing the crime. Sometime later the Iraqi army arrived at the scene and refused anyone entry, including the press.
Killing women for reasons of honor, shame and religion does happens in regions of Kurdistan and Iraq. The above incidents are not uncommon in some of the deeply religious and traditional communities. For long violence against women has been commonly used as a political and religious weapon and as a means of social control.

No, it’s not honorable or just or right under any circumstances. No matter if the Muslim world practices it, or the Yezidi do, or any other culture does — it must be totally eliminated and people need to be given the death penalty for such acts that they perpetrate like this.
I advocate keeping the videos and remembering why it is that we must eliminate this practice from the world.
—
And I had seen several clips and versions of the video and some “compilations” from someone putting together all the clips. I saw one that looked like someone from Amensty International had put it together. And it did look like the girl’s death was a process, in which she died over a period of time.
BUT, I was wrong — because I came across the video (which I had seen nowhere else before) and it was the *death video*, which really show how she died. And it is really bad. It makes those others look like they are kindergarten plays.
All the previous videos were simply the prelude. This one I could feel myself turning pale and getting sick... This one is the death of her...
You better have a strong stomach for this one...
If for no other reason, this should be seen to *grasp* the significance of this going on thrughout Muslim lands, time and time again. *This* is what is happening. Although this particular barbaric act was from the Yezidi, it is *typical* of what they *also* do in the Muslim lands. Its far more practiced in the Muslim lands than it is in this small and isolated group of people (although its bad enough with them).
Its absolutely terrible.
I read another womans post that said when she simply read the article about it happening she sanitized it in her head, thereby “cleaning it up” mentally, so it didn’t seem to be anything much than another story about those Middle Easterneers.
But, seeing it (on the video) took away that sanitizing in ones head from simply reading it in print. To the woman poster (that I read) by seeing it (on video), brought it home to her, much more deeply.
