Seatbelts for dogs...Sigh.

Out here where I live (very rural), I see dogs in the backs of pickup trucks a lot. I also see dead dogs by the side of the road. People should tie their dogs securely (and not so that they’ll hang themselves) when putting them in the truck bed.

That said, I got about 2 feet from a pit bull that was springing to lunge for my throat (I’m 5’6”, and at that time didn’t weigh more than 135) all of a sudden while walking on a dark road. The owner was running after him and luckily wrestled him to the ground before my throat was ripped out. I was in a state in which it is almost impossible to own a gun, what to speak of concealed carry. Not the case now, fortunately.

Laws against pit bulls are just fine with me. Even if it’s “keep them penned up and if they get out once they get taken away and the owner pays a big fine”. Better yet, pay a big fee and if the dog doesn’t attack anyone they don’t have to pay more money. I don’t know. I’m not one of these people who wants billions of laws - there’s billions too many already. But dogs that regularly bite, maul and kill people every year?

Ditto here.
I would like to secure my dog, but my current vehicle is not tall enough for a crate to fit him in, and he learned quickly how to wiggle out of a seatbelt harness-type thing. As it is, he has the whole backseat to himself; spends it snoozing or salivating all over the back windows, but I realize he would be thrown around in an accident.

>Absolutely, seat belts for dogs. The Dread Boston Salty has one.<

Nope, don't need no stoopid seat belt. My dogs travel in these:

I expect my dogs to be good riders, so them being a serious “distraction”, or rather, an obstacle, is out of the question.

They HAVE been good riders.

As far as THEIR safety, that’s the only reason I would consider belts/etc myself.

However, the way they and today’s cars are made, she simply is not comfortable. I mean, she can sit sideways, but she freezes there. She simply won’t move from that same position the whole time, won’t relax, and looks all downcast. She’s very submissive and seems to think since she can’t move easily, she’s being punished. She’s also pretty anxious so this can lead to a colitis flare-up where we struggle for weeks with diarrhea, not eating, making her eat rice, etc.

Yes, she’s a rare exception, but as an anecdote, there you are.

It’s my special reason now I don’t want to be FORCED to do this. And she loves riding cars, so it’s not as if it’s easy to stop taking her places.

As I pointed out above, this isn’t very practical for larger dogs in tinier cars, unfortunately.

No, it’s not. And, crating neutralizes the ability of the dog to protect its owner. I do put my little guys in crates, but the shepherd goes either way, depending on the situation.
