U.S. activist Rev. Jesse Jackson on Tuesday said his organization will target top energy companies like Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips in a push to create more jobs for women and minorities in the industry.
Jackson said members of his Rainbow PUSH Coalition plan to buy stock in 20 of the world's largest energy companies. As investors, the group will seek change by attending annual meetings, calling for talks with the companies' chief executives and pressing for fairness hearings at the state level.
"We intend to inject ourselves into the struggle for fair access to energy," Jackson told a news conference. "Historically, we've not had that access."
Minorities have been underrepresented in all parts of the energy sector in the United States and are largely relegated to the role of consumer, Jackson said.
He did not offer statistics but described minority representation in the industry as "very low."
As part of its efforts, Rainbow PUSH will examine the racial make-up of a company's board of directors, its suppliers, its consultants, its contractors and its outside legal firms, Jackson said.
Representatives for Exxon and ConocoPhillips did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
On Monday, Jackson said he met with John Hofmeister, president of Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Shell Oil Co. U.S. unit, and described the meeting as very good.

He did this a few years ago. Must be running short on cash for his leftist, racist crusades.
This from a guy that doesn't pay his power bill on time.
Read: Jack$on found out that the oil companies’ profits are up, so he wants his piece of the action. Take a hike, Je$$e!
Maybe they should have diversity training for the CEOs so they can understand Jackson’s ebonics.
The CEO of BP!
Those Justice Brothers ads he and Al are running on EIB are starting to pay off.
The oil is black. Why isn’t anyone protesting that we have no whites, yellow or browns?

In this paperback edition, the author exposes Jesse Jackson's life and works, uncovering a sordid tale of greed, ambition, and corruption from a self-proclaimed minister who has no qualms about poisoning American race relations for personal gain.
Latest shakedown.
During TransAlaska Pipeline construction each construction camp had an EEO officer and union reps. It’s hard to imagine it’s gotten slack in the oil/gas industry in the past 1/4 century.
Very good. A+
Poverty pimp
The companies should hire whoever they think are the most qualified to help them turn a profit. If that means they hire nothing but Eskimos then so be it.
My first thought also. Evidently the pressure on him from the accusations of extortion has eased up so he figures it's time to go back into business.
Or he's got another whore to support.

This guy is such a carpetbagging opportunist — there are a few better names for him but....such a disgusting hypocritical slimeball.
Another Je$$e Jackass shakedown.
He must have squandered all the protection money he received from Texaco.
Remember to thank Jesse when the regular hits $4.00 per gallon at the pumps.
Somebody told him that oil is black gold.
Exactly. The very same tactics used by Al Sharpton -- buying stock in media companies in order to combat racist lyrics in hip-hop. Jackson and Sharpton are in everything for the money. Nothing more, nothing less.
Texaco, Shell Workers Fight Discrimination
Worthly of Note: Oil; Employment
"Global enrollment in geosciences and other university majors relevant to the oil industry is dropping at the same time that the demand to devise new fuels and refining processes is rising. In the U.S., enrollment in geosciences hit a peak of 35,000 students in 1982 but now meanders around the 5,000 level, according to Scott Tinker, director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas."
"It is now around 1965 levels," he said. While enrollment in these programs is rising in China and a few other nations, it's mostly below the level required in nations where oil is being produced." "The picture is even worse at the graduate level. In 1982, about 4,000 Ph.D.s and master's degrees were awarded in geosciences in the U.S., and nearly half the recipients went into the oil industry, said Raul Restucci, executive vice president of exploration and production in the Middle East at Shell. Now only about 400 to 600 advanced degrees are handed out, and only 20 percent of recipients go to work for oil companies."
"The industry is having a real tough time filling jobs," Restucci said. "People availability will be a key constraint for a supply side response to increasing demand. In Houston, half of the work force will retire in the next 10 to 12 years."
correction to tagline.
Sharpton and Jackson are both worthless pieces of camel dung.
Did Jesse turn up some sinecure-less bastards?
When will Jesse target the NBA on Diversity?
EEO Officer during the Trans Alaska Pipeline building? I was working in HR for NC Machinery during that project....I believe it about the union reps...but, I sure do NOT remember ANY EEO officers - we’re talking 1977-79....
Oil company jobs aren’t like gubmint jobs. You need to read and write to work for Exxon or Conoco, and high school drop outs need not apply.
IOW, one of my sons wants an Exxon distributorship in Illinois.....
I bought the book, got about 3/4 of the way threw it, couldn’t hold down the bile any longer. That guy is an F’in crook.
There needs to be a big time investigation into Operation Push or whatever it is called these days. I bet it is crooked from the word go.
My MIL gave her copy to me because she could finish it either; it made her too mad to realize the guy wasnât in jail. I couldn’t finish it either for the same reason.
“He did this a few years ago. Must be running short on cash for his leftist, racist crusades”
Time for a new “SHAKEDOWN” to fill the coffers, and with oil companies making record profits(a fact not lost on Jackson) he will prevail.
“That guy is an Fin crook”
Therrrrrrrre ya go!
How many blue-eyed devil honkies are in the Communist Black Caucus?
And I bet a box of jelly doughnuts that old Jesse don’t have one Lakota Sioux Chief in his Rainbox Phish Operation. I’m just plain affronted.
And why are Twinkies white inside?
Are the white squiggles atop the Hostess cupcakes a secret code for white corporate America to take over Nabisco?
And what about Mayor Nagin’s Chocolate City? What’s he got against plain white bread?
So many questions, so little time to protest whitey.
This aging Red never met an enemy of the United States he didn’t like.
Jack$on $hakedown alert.
Jesse Jackson should get NO publicity - PERIOD.
He is nothing more than a hypocritical, lying racial huckster of the vilest and most transparent sort.
Besides, who can understand him when he’s talking anyway?
His speech goes beyond ebonics. Its a unique language.
Shakedown #528 for Jesse. Guess the oil company profits made it onto his radar screeen.
Is his organization still tax exempt??
My dad retired early from an oil company. He genuinely felt the diverse people that were being hired were gonna blow the place up sooner or later.
Old JJ is after the big money now!!!!!!
Yes, I met some. The EEO office of one was right across from my office. Don’t know that he ever got any business, but he was ready just in case.
Got news for you Mr Jackson! Over 20 offshore rigs off the coast of Louisiana went down during Katrina and they all had to be rebuilt. Lots of good paying jobs. Your "evacuees" didn't manage to find their way out there and instead are sitting on their unemployed butts in Houston licking their lips at the new extension of FEMA checks all the way to March 2009!
As for office work, the oil and gas industry is heavily based in science, mathematics, and R&D. Your minorities will need to have advanced degrees. They don't give jobs away. You earn them. I started in the oil patch and worked, saved money, sent myself to college, and now am employed in R&D.
Let me repeat. They do NOT give jobs away.
