Is there a pattern to these accidents?

The phenomenon is an enginering usage of the word creep.

Creep..... A slow flow of metal when under high temperature or great pressure. Yahoo dictionary.

For the record

"Someone needs to rub this in Rosie’s face."

THAT was my first thought, too.

It has been proven, Kyle did it. You can clearly see the irrefuteable evidence in this "enhanced" photo.

Yeah, I goofed. Massive 2nd degree burns can put you in the hospital, but you can walk around (albeit in some real pain) with decent 2nd degree burns. I was thinking 3rd degree...

almost a year before the overpass was restored.

Yikes. This could be a huge problem for San Francisco.

Twenty years ago, I lived in Emeryville, on a nice peninsula that goes out into the bay just north of the bridge. When I moved there in '85, I could run into The City for lunch, as it took 12 minutes to cross the Bay Bridge. In the three years I lived there, San Fran traffic reached permanent gridlock status and the trip took 1-1/2 hours at the same time of day.

THIS wreck will likely tie up everything for miles around until 2044.

“a gasoline tanker truck explosion inside one of the three tunnels in the hills above Oakland”

It’s the Caldecott Tunnel and the scorch marks are still visible all the way through as a grim reminder.

I was thinking that jet fuel had a higher heat of combustion than gasoline....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency

has regular gas at 125K BTU/gal,
aviation gas at 120.2K BTU/gal,
jet fuel slightly more, 127.5K-135K BTU/gal.

I believe it’s the percent of the body covered that makes the difference. I minor burn all over your body (like sunburn) can be worse than a bad burn in one spot.

Any terrorist watching that would have a perfect idea of how a low manpower force could concentrate casualties.

And yet, it hasn’t happened again since September 11th. Now, why would that be? Hmmmmnnnn . . . Rosie, can you offer a guess?
