WASHINGTON A conference of U.S. circuit court judges is recommending that Congress approve three permanent judgeships along the Texas-Mexico border to handle an increase in immigration and drug trafficking cases.
The Judicial Conference is asking for 38 new permanent jurists nationwide, and 14 temporary positions to alleviate a backlog of cases.
Ten of the permanent judgeships would go to Southwest border states, where immigration and drug trafficking cases exceed 50 percent of all criminal filings.
The Judicial Conference also recommends four permanent and one temporary judgeship in Arizona, and one permanent and one temporary judgeship in New Mexico.
"The U.S. district courts that border Mexico are overwhelmed with immigration cases. This is a crisis that needs to be addressed now," said Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.
Domenici and Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, have introduced separate bills to create the judgeships.
Cuellar said the legislation would dovetail with comprehensive immigration reform bills that the House and Senate are expected to consider this year.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who has signed on to Domenici's bill, said a judicial expansion on the Southwest border is long overdue.
Cornyn said the border courts "have been overburdened by immigration filings for several years."
Specifically, the House and Senate bills would create two judgeships in the Southern District of Texas, which includes the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo. Another judgeship would be created in the Western District, which includes San Antonio, Del Rio and El Paso.
According to the Judicial Conference, immigration cases in the Southern District increased 70 percent in fiscal 2006, which ended Sept. 30. Immigration cases increased 50 percent in the Western District during that period.
"As we put more Border Patrol agents and immigration personnel on the border, criminal immigration caseloads are rising," Domenici said.
Without more judges, he said, "we will create an even more unworkable situation that already involves mass arraignments and sentencing proceedings."
The Judicial Conference was created by Congress in 1922 to serve as the principal policy-making body charged with administration of U.S. courts.
There are now 19 permanent judges serving the Southern District of Texas, and 13 in the Western District.

Idiots.
More Americans killed by illegal aliens than Iraq war, study says
When you start digging into the numbers the only ones that can be sourced with the feds are the number of American murdered in 2005: 16692
I have seen federal numbers for illegals held in jail ranging from 19.3% to 27% of the federal prison population.
Here's a sampling of USA cities wanted for murder. What you'll see is that in big USA cities like LA or NYC most of the murderers are Hispanic. Unknown are the % of illegals. In smaller cities the FBI will post the nationalities of the murderers. About 25% of the most wanted are illegals wanted for murder. This number agrees with the percentage of illegals incarcerated in federal prisons. +-25%Pictures of top 10 most wanted in LA. Up until recent stories about crime in LA posted by the LA Times--the pictures included the nationality of the murderers. They were all foreign nationals and mostly Mexican.
Wanted for Murder in New York City.
Chicago wanted for Murder
Philadelphia wanted for murder
San Francisco wanted for Murder
New Orleans wanted for Murder
Pictures of suspects wanted for murder in Washington DC
FBI USA 10 most wanted. (two of 10 are Mexican nationals)
There are currently no exact numbers on the number of Americans killed by illegals. Part of the reason is that the government deliberately obscures the number. I talked on the phone with the head of statistics for the US Bureau of Prisons. He said his office wasn't allowed to publish the number of illegal alien murderers. Rather they were forced to put legal and non legal residents in the same category. I talked to ICE. They put out detailed numbers on illegal child molestors. However, they put out nothing on illegal murderers.
Part of the reason for the silence on the matter is that there is evidence to suggest that most Americans being killed by illegals are black--as is the suggestion in this LA Times Article.
All that said, it could be argued that if you include the number of illegals in state and local prisons the number of illegals in jail shrinks to 6% of the total prison population. Never the less if you multiply 16692 (the number of americans murdered in 2005) * .06 (illegal alien percent of total prison population) * 4 (the number of years the US has been in Iraq). The result is that more americans (4006) have been killed by illegals than have been killed in the Iraq war.
This point needs to be hammered home. Just as the liberals have hammered home the point about americans killed in Iraq.
To look at other USA cities go here http://stlouis.fbi.gov/ and replace stlouis with the city you want.

Of course this common sense solution has never been part of the "decider's" plan for the invasion of America.
If he likes illegal aliens so much, why hasn't he created a haven for them at the Crawford "ranch"? No, he forces them upon us to trash our towns.
Why don't we just STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION? That would get rid of 90% of the 50%. I guess that makes too much sense. WHAT was I thinking?
“If he likes illegal aliens so much, why hasn’t he created a haven for them at the Crawford “ranch”? No, he forces them upon us to trash our towns”
That is the elitist mentality....pure and simple!
For who? The dealers and illegals? Or the U.S. side County Sheriffs and BP agents?
Ping!
Tomorrow's headline? "U.S. DOJ responds to district court crisis with plan to jail Border Patrol and local law enforcement personnel without trial. 'Should cut case load by at least 75 percent,' says DOJ spokesman"
