Bush: 'Immigration laws should be followed'

WND AT THE WHITE HOUSE

Bush: 'Immigration laws should be followed'
Spokeswoman says no room for rebel 'sanctuary' cities

The president expects that federal laws – including immigration laws – will be enforced, leaving the implication there is no room for rebel cities that decide to provide "sanctuary" for illegal aliens, according to a White House spokeswoman.

Dana Perino was responding to a question from Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House.

"How will the United States ever develop, adopt and enforce any sort of immigration policy when individual leaders such as San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom have vowed to oppose federal enforcement of such laws and, in fact, are preparing to run a sanctuary city that would facilitate illegal activities, as just reported for the San Francisco Chronicle?" he asked.

"President Bush believes that the laws of this country, including immigration laws, need to be followed," she answered.

In the Chronicle report, Newsom vowed to maintain San Francisco as that type of sanctuary and do everything he can to discourage federal authorities from conducting immigration raids there.

"I will not allow any of my department heads or anyone associated with this city to cooperate in any way, shape or form with these raids," Newsom told the newspaper. "We are a sanctuary city, make no mistake about it."

Newsom has a reputation of making his own decisions. At one point he arbitrarily decided the state's restriction that marriage is only between one man and one woman wasn't for him, and he started issuing marriage certificates to same-sex couples.

The courts later rejected his action.

While officials declared San Francisco a "sanctuary city" in 1989, a move taken by other cities as well, it has no legal impact, and federal immigration authorities have conducted raises in many locations.

"Our action is to stand strong in opposition to these raids … to make sure that we are not contributing in any way, shape or form," he told the paper.

In a related question, Kinsolving asked Perino for the president's reaction to a recent no-confidence vote by U.S. Border Patrol agents.

"The National Border Patrol Council, the union of our 11,000 non-supervisory U.S. Border Patrol agents, has just passed a resolution, which, among other concerns, deplores what they say is, 'shamelessly promoting amnesty and a greatly expanded guest worker program, despite intense opposition to these concepts from the front-line Border Patrol agents who risk their lives enforcing our nation's immigration laws.' … What is the White House reaction to this resolution?" Kinsolving asked.

"I haven't seen the resolution. What I would say is that I would hope that the council would take a look at the president's plan. We are working with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to try to work through a plan that would help alleviate the pressure at the border. And I understand that they have very real concerns, since they work on the border every day. And the president believes that the plan that we have in place is one that would help alleviate the problems at the border, as well as allow our country to be one that is continuing to be a welcoming one," she said.

What a typical, limp, wet-noodle statement by the Prez.

And that’s not to mention his long record of pro-illegal policies.

Want to stop the “sanctuary city” problem?

Easy..... Stop all federal funds to any state wherein the leaders knowingly allow it.

Then prosecute the leaders that allowed or supported such sanctuary’s.

Start with San Francisco and this would be done within a couple of months.

It’s hard to believe the President cares about the borders, but I am glad he said this. On Newsom: I wish the Coingress was still in Repub hands, AND, that Congress voted to cut off any and all federal funds for sanctuary cities, including Medicare.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

The man is a comedian. Such lip service! Not even “Immigration laws WILL be followed”, or MUST be followed. Just should. I sure wish the IRS would tell me I “should” pay my Federal income taxes. Gee, you know I REALLY should, but I just don’t think I’m gonna...

Bush continues to be a severe embarrassment on the issue of immigration. Too little, too late you idiot! If Bush had cracked down hard on illegal immigration, he would never have lost the Senate.

I don’t mean deporting those here, but if he just slammed the door on the border shut and prevented illegals from just walking across the border 13 million at a time, the 80% of the electorate who has been demanding border enforcment would have turned out.

At least then, Convervative Republicans and Libertarian Independence would have had a reason to turn out and vote, rather than stay home.

Too little, to late, Senior idiota!

I hear somebody worried about his legacy.

Personally, I think that it's his stance - or non-stance - on immigration that cost the GOP the election, not Iraq. If he's not willing to defend our borders, why the heck is he trying to defend Iraq?

Good ideas. It would be alot easier to just cut off all federal funds to cities/counties/states that declare themselves illegal alien sanctuaries than to prosecute them all. That would probably force 90 percent of the offending local/state governments to drop the sanctuary policy in order to receive their federal tax dollars again, without having to spend time prosecuting these offending officials.

I'm sure the local voters will take care of the other 10 percent that refuse to drop their sanctuary status. Let them try to raise taxes even higher to offset the loss of federal tax dollars. I feel that even in ultra liberal/marxist areas, that these politicians would be thrown out on their ears, not so much for the sanctuary policies, but for the loss of very significant federal dollars and a very large increase in local taxes to offset loss of federal tax dollars.

Let's see how long they can go without their federal highway funds, education funds, research funds, housing funds, medicare funds, etc.

Thank you Mr. President for beginning to show leadership on this dire issue, FAR TOO LATE. I suppose the week you leave office you will lead the way on The Fair Tax or any number of other things that need to be done but only require the basic leadership of a president.

Mr. Bush, I really like you on a personal level, but you have been a terrible disappointment during your second term.

As far as that goes, what Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat congress is doing is tantamount to an attempted coup d’état. The president should arrest them and their co-mutineers and charge them accordingly. What would’ve Lincoln done?

What would’ve Lincoln done?

He would have had them arrested and incarcerated for the duration. But you already knew that.

And as far as the 'constitutional crisis' thing goes, we've been into a slow motion one for the last 60 years or so.

For the life of me I can't find a single word authorizing 'aid' to cities, towns, Counties, or States anywhere in the Constitution.

But what the hell do I know. I'm just a wild eyed right wing nut job who thinks that Article 3, Section 8 is actually restrictive of Federal power and not just some enumerated starting point for Congress to dole out taxpayer money so they can get their treasonous backsides re-elected.

He does have the power to put down mutinies, rebellions and insurrections you know.

I'd love to see Pelosi frog marched out of her office after being indicted for violating the Logan Act. If Gonzalez weren't completely useless he'd have a couple of Grand Juries empaneled right now for that very purpose.
