Internet abuzz over shooter's mysterious markings

CHICAGO — All at once, the world went searching for the meaning of "Ismail Ax."

Those two words, written in red ink on one arm of Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old Virginia Tech student suspected of the campus shooting spree, set off a massive Internet hunt by the public Tuesday for clues to what might have motivated the nation's worst mass killings.

Almost as soon as the Chicago Tribune's Web site reported that detail, which then was picked up by news organizations around the world, the blogosphere filled with theories about the possible meaning of "Ismail Ax." Hundreds of bloggers speculated on a link to Islam or to literature; thousands offered their opinions and millions read the commentaries, according to Technorati.com.

Technorati.com, a Web site that tracks the blogosphere, said that by late afternoon Tuesday, there were nearly 300 blog posts regarding Ismail Ax. There were other reactions. A TV repair-shop owner in Corpus Christi, Texas, registered the domain name www.ismailax.com Tuesday morning.

"When I hear a name, I register it. I have about 200 names right now," said Raymond Patterson, who registered the site five minutes after he heard the phrase "Ismail Ax" mentioned on a Fox News broadcast. He said he had no intention of making "blood money" from the site.

James Fenimore Cooper’s novel “The Prairie,” Ishmael Bush is known as an outlawed warrior, according to an essay written in 1969 by William Goetzmann, a University of Texas History professor.
In Cooper’s book, “Bush carries the prime symbol of evil — the spoiler’s axe,” the professor wrote.

WOW....

"Ismail Ax."

Rearrange the letters and get "I Islam ax."

He is the "axe of Islam."

If I ever decide to go out in a flurry of lead, I am going to write "perlong domata" on my arms and face.

Remember that scene
just before Holden shoots up
his dormitory?

Doesn't he have sex
with a girl named "Ishmael?"
Then, doesn't that girl

chop off a teacher's
head with a fire ax she steals?
I haven't read through

the book in a while
and I might have some details
slightly out of whack . . .

his personal fantasy land doesn’t interest me.

It interested you enough to click on a thread about it.
And to make a post about it.

Looks like it interests you very much.

What else are you in denial about?

There was someone here last night, I don’t recall who, (but his initials were very close to “CSI”) pointing out that there is a psychiatrist in Turkey named “Ismail Ak” who seems to specialize in treating psychopaths like the late Mr. Cho.

I think he was simply trying to identify himself to NBC. They would have something that they would know to be from him. The fly in the ointment was his messing up the address.

In one of the pictures posted on the MSNBC site, he almost seems to be in a prayer pose, so those who say there is a religious motivation might be right, though I still doubt it.

SALAMI XI

He was looking for an italian deli.

Actually I think he was just in his own fantasyland.

I think half the people he was talking about in his video exist only in his own head. When all is said and done, they are going to find the guy is barking mad.

I think the my feelings about this are due to the fact that he’s dead; and I don’t like to give him “study-about-him” time. Manson’s still alive; so I figure we’d better know about his freaky fantasies.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t know about this new pig. Knowing might help us in future disasters, and I am curious about his background: I just don’t want to turn him into some kind of a hero. I don’t want to give the pig what he wanted: A platform for his beliefs.

I’m very interested in the case!!! Mostly, I want to know about the victims, I think.

My friends were always surprised of my lack of interest in Manson. I just thought he was a idiot. Yes he was able to get into peoples heads. Also I think a lot of people were entertained by him.
This Cho guy will be studied for years I read that they know of no mass murderer that ever stopped and made a video and actually mail it!

I took the time to look into it, the Praire has each chapter with a quote from Shakepeare (most of them) like McBeef and then a scene where a grieving mother etc.. etc.. etc..

How the book falls into his debaucery rantings is this, the noble savage myth -vs- souless western thought, and the squatter...

the true believer wants to transcend himself from disgust with himself, the ‘noble savage’ is a common theme.

If I were to see the additional rantings at NBC and the suicide notes, I bet that that explanation is holistic with his actions.

This was a sick person (very nihilistic and narcissistic) and the aluding to a religous content off mark to the literary one.

A nut job who just happens to have changed their name to “A. Ishmael”. Who thinks that being a martyr means to take out as many people as you can.

Sounds like R.O.P. to me.

It is an abbreviation for "Religion of Peace." It is an ironic reference to Islam, which has been called the "Religion of Peace" by the President.

Wow. That doesn't say much for Cho's intellect. Accusing him of misspelling a two letter word.
