Giuliani Speaks Truth to the GOP (and still leads in the polls)
Donklephant ^ | 4/17/07

Posted on 04/18/2007 10:27:50 AM PDT by meg88

Rudy is the new straight talker. No doubt about it.

From the NY Post:

Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, “Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.”

Asked about abortion, he said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”

The GOP and the modern conservative movement have always prided themselves on being the idea people.

Rudy wants to regain that and capture the nation’s imagination.

Good for him, but easier said than done.

He’s going to have a tough time convincing the social issues voters that he won’t abandon their fight to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I guess we’ll see if his tune is the same come January of next year.

The average GOP voter has no idea where Rudy stands on many issues.

But eventually they will.

Asked about abortion, he said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”

If we really want to "grow" we need to get beyond even more issues like the Second Amendment, taxes, smaller government, the war on terror etc. Let's just tear up our platform entirely so we can "get beyond" all those nasty, messy "issues".

And Pro-Life forms a part of the bedrock of the GOP, though moral relativism on the part of the RINO’s is trying ot erode it.

There really are pro-choice (read abortion defenders) republican posters who are members of freerepublic. Several come to mind immediately and every one of them seems to think Rudy will remove abortion as an issue from the political scene just as they want done ... which is what Rudy seems hell-bent to do when he denigrates the issue as something we conservatives will have to learn to ignore.

I'm starting to think even Rudy has no idea where he stands on many issues.

Depends upon which version of Rudy. For example, on fiscal matters, you have first-term Rudy and second-term Rudy:

For partial birth abortion, you have Mayor Rudy supporting Clinton's veto of a PBA ban. You have presidential candidate Rudy v1.0 saying he would support a PBA ban that had provisisions for the life of the mother. And you have presidential candidate Rudy v1.1 supporting SCOTUS upholding the ban even though it had no provision for the life of the mother.

According to government numbers abortions decreased by over 400,000 during pro abort Clinton. The abortion issue is something that will come from the country having a change of heart.

That said, Rudy had a remark on Iraq that made me sick. It was to the effect of "whether we win or not in Iraq we still will have to fight the WOT". That statement is submoronic. The war is Iraq and success in Iraq is directly linked to victory in the WOT. That is it.

His stance on the 2nd amendment of the constitution vs. his remarks that abortion, being a right should be gov't funded certainly doesn't jive.

OK, let's legalize mass killings on college campuses as well. Then they will stop happening . . . just as soon as the killers all have a change of heart.

IMO: If Fred Thompson does not run Rudy will be the nominee.

Then the vote will in all likelihood be Rudy v Hillary; and on Life Marriage RKBA etc. they are essentially the same.

PLEASE RUN FRED!

Thank you both for the pings.

ALL the polls are PRIOR to the candidate debates.

Mayor Guilliani has GOOD name recognition across America for his post 9/11 leadership and he’s well liked. I like him, but that’s not to say that everyone who likes him, will vote for him in the primaries. I won’t!

Let the debates commence and then let’s watch the polls AFTER voters are paying attention to the issues.

We’ve had news today that many of us have been praying for from our FIVE ROMAN CATHOLIC Supreme Court Justices!!!

This is a day for thanks to God and (for me) to President Bush and to Justices Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas and Kennedy!!!
