I am assuming with Mom in your name you are female.

You don’t mention your state but since most states are now “Shall issue” states contact your local government to ask about status of your local law.

If it is a shall issue state ask for a list of hand gun instructors that have complied with the requirement for training.

Most states have a combination of class room and range requirements to fulfill both for safety and proficiency.

Then go to the local sports store and look over the hand guns and take the list of instructors with you. See if any of the instructors have either raves or hisses...

As far as model is concerned. Hand size makes a huge difference.

Revolver vs automatic..

Revolvers tend to be extremely reliable, are easy to load (except in an emergency unless you have a speed loader) , they are easy to clean, they come in a variety of sizes but you are limited by capacity. 6 shot is about as good as it gets. They also tend to be heavy.

Automatics are harder to clean, They come in a variety of sizes , you can get more rounds in a clip (sometimes up to 13 shots) but the clips tend to get to be a little hard to load for someone girly like me.

Automatics can bite when the slide flies back so it takes some getting used to.

The best gun is the one you have with you and that you can handle competently.

Aside from that, as a woman a 38 in a revolver feels comfortable and not too heavy to carry. In an automatic a .380 is a good size for a woman... They are relatively small in terms of dimension but have a fair sized slug.

They tend to fit in a front pants pocket without leaving too much of a print..If you have it in your purse it doesn’t feel like a bag of rocks.

Practice, practice, practice.

Thank you. Yes, I’m female.

I’d feel safer with something light and less powerful than I do now with nothing at all.

I’m in NY. Long guns, (shot guns) don’t require anything special in regulations but hand guns do. But I have a squeaky clean record, so there shouldn’t be any reason to be refused.

Good Luck .

Happy Shopping for both an instructor and for a suitable fire arm.

Don’t go for too small. They don’t have a lot of stopping power.

I was thought that might be the case. I figured something middle range would work. I want something effective but easy to handle by a woman and easy to conceal.

A good friend of mine, who is also my CCW and self defense instructor, wrote the following...I happen to agree:

In January of this year the Virginia State Legislature considered a bill that would allow concealed-carry permit (CCP) holders to carry their arms on school properties. The bill was killed as soon as it was introduced.

A spokesman for Virginia Tech. publicly thanked the legislature for defeating it so that people on their campus “would feel so much safer”. Now that 32 of their finest have been murdered by a maniac, on that campus that is now “so much safer”, I wonder if the lawmakers and that VT spokesperson are rethinking that bill. Probably not.

How is it that concealed-carry permit holders who are trained, background-checked and certified by the state cannot be trusted on school property? Is there something about being on school grounds that turns them into dangerous lunatics? I don’t think so.

Thirty two students and faculty were lined up and executed, one by one, because they were obeying the law that said: NO GUNS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY!
They paid a very high price for being law-abiding.

A science teacher was holding the door against the shooter while his students were escaping out the windows. He’s now a dead hero. I wonder what a handgun would have been worth to him? How many lives could he have saved?

When we announce to the world that there will be no firearms on school grounds, we are encouraging lunatics to shoot up our schools. And they are doing it. We disarm all the law-abiding but we can’t disarm the crazies who kill our kids because we set them up like sitting ducks.

How long are we going to put up with these losses? How many more kids have to die before we rethink stupid laws that put them at risk?

My first carry gun was the .44 special, snub nose Charter Arms by Bulldog. I retired that one and now carry a Ruger P345 .45 semi. I also have a 9mm by Astra. I enjoy them all...but I like the feel of the .45!
