CBS 2 learned early Saturday that the National Action Network has increased the Rev. Al Sharpton's security due to increased death threats in the wake of the firing of radio host Don Imus by MSNBC and CBS Radio.
Beefed up security will also be in place at the National Action Network's headquarters in Harlem.
“We have no way of knowing the seriousness of these threats, but they have intensified greatly in the last two days as Rev. Sharpton was figured prominently in the firing of Don Imus," Attorney Charlie King said in an statement early Saturday morning.
"Since Rev. Sharpton survived a personal assassination attempt where he was stabbed, we take any and all threats, especially at this volume, very serious. Therefore, all may be comfortable that we will not take the safety of our staff or that of our President lightly.”
Sharpton told CBS 2's Marcia Kramer on Friday that just hours after he met with CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves on Thursday he got a call that Imus was getting fired.
"I remember saying to Mr. Moonves, 'if you said it, you'd be fired. Does he have more rights than you?'" Sharpton said.
Part of Sharpton's clout comes from his National Action Network -- with its half a million supporters across the country, and his ability to mobilize both opinions and protesters.
Sharpton took up the cause of the members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team after Imus referred to them as "nappy-headed hos" on his radio show last week.
Despite toning down his flamboyant, combative style over the years, there are many people who think Sharpton has not overcome his controversial past, which includes his much-publicized defense of then-15-year-old Tawana Brawley, a black woman, who received national attention two decades ago for her claim that she was raped by six white men, including police officers, in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
The alleged incident soon became a media sensation, with Sharpton at the center of the controversy. There were no indictments in an investigation conducted by a grand jury in October 1988, who cited a lack of evidence, concluding she had not been abducted, assaulted, raped or sodomized.
"He could be much more of a formidable force in this country, much more of a leader and respected across the board if he just said I apologize for my past. I did wrong. I'm sorry," radio host and columnist Armstrong Williams told CBS 2 on Friday.
Sharpton told CBS 2 on Friday he does admit to past mistakes.
"Sometimes, being flippant, shooting from the hip ... sometimes letting your vanity outrun your sanity," Sharpton said, citing examples.
In 1999, Sharpton led a massive protest on behalf of Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Africa who was shot to death by NYPD officers. Sharpton claimed that Diallo's death was the result of police brutality and racial profiling. Diallo's family was later awarded $3 million in a wrongful death suit filed against the city.
More recently, Sharpton took up the cause of Sean Bell, an unarmed groom, who was shot dead in a hail of 50 police bullets on Nov. 25, 2006.
I don’t believe a word of it. I think Sharpton is having another Tawana Brawley moment - all lies, all the time.

A woman I knew used to leave “death threat notes” on the window of her own car every time she felt like she wasn't getting enough attention *or* she’d been caught in yet another lie.
In her case, she neglected to change her distinctive handwriting and they were probably the only “death threats” in history that had smiley faces/flowers over every “i” and “j”.

Poor man. I feel for him. lol These guys go around destroying as much as they help and wonder why someone might wish them ill will. The guy shoots off his mouth as if he is tied directly in to the brain of every black person worth being black in the USA. I suppose that is one thing I’ve never felt comfortable with. I don’t look to one white guy to represent me and certainly wouldn’t want one white guy talking for all Caucasians but this is typically with minorities. Now it seems there is always a loud mouth racist at the front of these groups who gets his or her kicks as the finger pointer and discerner of racial injustice.
If you hope for it, it won't happen soon enough.

Libs like to play the death threat card to get sympathy for their misguided actions.
What the metro-area papers didn't tell you is that a jury awarded $345,000 to New York prosecutor Steven Pagones because Sharpton repeatedly defamed Pagones by participating in the rape hoax story invented by teenager Tawana Brawley, and by knowingly falsely accusing Pagones of rape.
In 1989, a young woman jogger in Central Park was viciously raped and beaten by a gang of youths. Sharpton led a mob outside the court which claimed, without a shred of evidence, that "the boyfriend did it," and screamed that the victim was a "whore."
At a rally in Harlem, Sharpton denounced a Jewish small business owner as a "white interloper," and then stood by approvingly while one his associates incited the crowd to violence. Later, a listener killed seven people in the store. Sharpton then lied and claimed he had never been at the rally.
Sharpton helped incite a murderous anti-Jewish pogrom in Brooklyn when he gave a speech at a funeral of a black child who had been accidentally killed by a Jewish driver. Sharpton announced, "If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house." He also organized a boycott of small grocery stores owned by Korean immigrants. He called New York City's first black mayor, David Dinkins, "that n----- whore turning tricks in City Hall."
In 1994, Sharpton explained black cultural superiority: "White folks were in caves while we were building empires. . . . We taught philosophy, astrology, and mathematics before Socrates and those Greek homos."
The Denver Post article absurdly concluded with a quote from a CU student who was using Sharpton's speech as an occasion to protest against hate crimes on the CU campus. The Post, like the rest of the metro-area media, disgracefully refused to inform the public that the speaker inside was a professional hate-crime perpetrator.

Charleton needs all the security he can get to keep the Court judgment (TAWANA BRAWLEY) from being served on him!
Since there has been no governmental involvement in this matter, the issue of free speech is moot. More than anything, this controversy is about hypocrisy of the media.
I doubt there were any threats. This is all part of the same public relations stunt to give the revs more power and to get the opposition fired.
