Bush library plans under fire

DALLAS, United States (AFP) - Plans to establish a presidential library and think tank for George W. Bush at his wife's alma mater in Texas have come under fire from both faculty and the clergy associated with Southern Methodist University.

A vocal group of professors, concerned about how an institute billed to be "inspired by the principles of George W. Bush's administration" might affect the university's reputation, have been working to block the library.

At a recent vote, the faculty senate split 13-13 over creating a complete divide between the institute and the university, where First Lady Laura Bush earned a bachelor of science degree in education in 1968.

"I'm concerned that we're going to be judged by the things this institute does," said history professor Benjamin Johnson.

"These guys are so divisive, so unpopular, it seems to me really dangerous to go for an arrangement that could turn the face of your university over to them without any controls over them."

Whew!

Never heard of anything so spiteful before concerning the location of a Presidential Library. They’re freezing Bush out all over the place - liberals, that is.

“Fifteen current and retired bishops have launched an online petition saying that the “linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate.” It currently has over 10,000 signatures.”

I'm going to make a wild guess here and say this professor has no problem taking an "objective" view when he teaches the history of Marxism, and would dismiss any idea that this would cause people to judge his university based on that.

Anyone think I'm wrong?

given what is happening all throughout academia these days, he would be nuts to locate this on a campus. it will simply become a focal point for protests. Do what Reagan did and make it at a standalone location.

Hey...Dallas is the WORST city in the USA to do business.

They lost the Rangers and the Cowboys to MY city.

I say...since Pres. Bush was an owner of the Texas Rangers..and Arlington is not too far from Dallas, he should build his library here.

We would love to have the extra tourism...and we are much more accomodating to business.

I know a few Conservatives that are freezing him out as well.
The Rockefeller Coup has been discovered.

Maybe he should but his “Think Tank” in Mexico?

Bush’s enemies are his greatest asset. They are all afflicted with Bush Derangement Syndrome. George Bush looks down right reasonable in comparison.

"I am hesitant to see Southern Methodist University welcoming the institute of a Methodist who has been so contrary to the teachings of the Methodist Church," said Reverend C. Joseph Sprague, a recently retired Chicago-area Methodist bishop who helped sponsor the petition.

Hey Reverend, the Methodist Church's teachings being so contrary to the Bible has caused lots of us to become ex Methodists.

Yep. Liberals. They hate Bush with a venom even though he's been closer to them on a number of domestic policy issues than conservatives.

From above:

“I am hesitant to see Southern Methodist University welcoming the institute of a Methodist who has been so contrary to the teachings of the Methodist Church,” said Reverend C. Joseph Sprague, a recently retired Chicago-area Methodist bishop who helped sponsor the petition.”

From 2003:

“Official charges of heresy have been filed against the United Methodist bishop of Chicago, accusing him of abandoning some Christian doctrines.

On the basis of a speech he gave a year ago and a recently published book, 28 Methodists say C. Joseph Sprague should renounce his views or resign his office for not believing in such traditional doctrines as the virgin birth of Jesus, his bodily resurrection and his exclusive role in salvation.”

Nice find. Notice that the news media didn’t bother to mention that the “Methodist” bishops were gay, marxist, heretics fired from the Methodist Church...even though words like “neocon” were used in the article to describe President Bush.

Everyone knows that our universities are captained and maned by a bunch of ex hippies who couldn’t get a decent job in the field of their specialization.

If it wasn’t for fielding a football team and needing weak subjects I would ask my old alma mater to shut down 60 percent of it’s useless classes.

The Methodist Church of my Father - The Methodist Episcopal Church South is long since dead and gone. Merging with the Northern Church was a fatal error.
SMU was a creature of the Southern Church but now they’re almost as liberal as Duke.

I don’t think the President is going to taint anyone’s perception of SMU, because whenever I think of SMU the first thing that comes to mind is the most corrupt football program in the last 3 decades.

Arlington is a fantastic place.... if you are arriving legally or illegaly from a third world country. The I-30 corridor is the illusion of the century. Take a trip down Collins or Cooper, it’s like the “Small World” ride at Disney.

SMU is located in the Park Cities. A place with crime rates Dallas and Arlington could only dream about. By the way, both residential and commercial real estate in Dallas is booming. George W. Bush was a resident of Preston Hollow, only about a half a mile from the Park Cities, and well within Dallas city limits. Do you think he’d want his kids growing up in Arlington? Ha.

This story just proves the idiocy of BDS. What university would not want a presidential library on their campus to attract additional funds and visitors? They are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Interesting. And yet Emory University has not repudiated any association with President Carter even after his recent book.
