Not Since The Inquisition ("Global Warming" a religion?) [William. F. Buckley, Jr.]
The New York Sun ^ | April 2, 2007 | William F. Buckley, Jr.

Posted on 04/03/2007 7:58:43 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The heavy condemnatory breathing on the subject of global warming outdoes anything since high moments of the Inquisition. A respectable columnist, Thomas Friedman of the New York Times, opened his essay last week by writing, "Sometimes you read something about this administration that's just so shameful it takes your breath away."

What asphyxiated this critic was the discovery that a White House official had edited "government climate reports to play up uncertainty of a human role in global warming." The correspondent advises that the culprit had been an oil-industry lobbyist before joining the administration, and on leaving it he took a job with ExxonMobil.

For those with addled reflexes, here is the story compressed: (1) Anyone who speaks discriminatingly about global warming is conspiring to belittle the threat. Such people end up (2) working for ExxonMobil, a perpetrator of the great threat the malefactor sought to distract us from.

I'd guess that, in the current mood, I should enter the datum that my father was in the oil business. But having done that, I think it fair to ask: Are we invited to assume that anyone who works in a business that generates greenhouse gases (a) is complicit in the global-warming problem? and (b) should resign and seek work elsewhere? One recalls the plant in Nazi Germany that manufactured the toxic gas Zyklon B. The primary use of this gas was in the extermination camps, whose masters were looking for efficient ways to destroy human beings. Is the community engaged in oil production the contemporary equivalent of the makers of Zyklon B?

2020- Liberals cry about “Global Winter” as temperatures for some unknown reason begin to trend downward as if on some magical cyclical pattern.

Thee won't be any "magical cyclical pattern" to it if there is a Republican in the White House. It will be his fault, pure and simple.

It is for sentences like this that I love Buckley--nice to know he can still produce them. The essay goes downhill after that but picks up a bit at the end with the mention of Algore.

Another prophetic quote from Goethe (1832) “Man in his misguidance has powerfully interfered with nature. He has devastated the forests, and thereby even changed the atmospheric conditions and the climate. Some species of plants and animals have become entirely extinct through man, although they were essential in the economy of Nature. Everywhere the purity of the air is affected by smoke and the like, and the rivers are defiled. These and other things are serious encroachments upon Nature, which men nowadays entirely overlook but which are of the greatest importance, and at once show their evil effect not only upon plants but upon animals as well, the latter not having the endurance and power of resistance of man”

Found this at Hippie.com. It is a new religion again......

1990’s liberal’s cried constantly about how ‘obstructinist” and mean the republicans were. Remember clinton’s mantra the right was practicing the politics of obstruction.
2000’s liberals in total obstruction mode cry constantly that obstructionism is the new patriotism.

No, when your body decomposes it releases "killer" CO2 into the atmosphere, every human is carbon negative. Had Prophet Gore, CO2buh, become president, would he be so concerned about his eff'en "carbon" footprint in Airforce One? Was he concerned about it in Airforce Two when he was VP? I doubt it.

Great article, and great to know that Mr. Buckley is still around and still lucid.

If William F Buckley was in the terminal stages of Organic Brain Syndrome complicated by end stage Alziheimers, of which neither he suffers, he would make more sense than Al Gore and his "Band of the Brain Dead."

John Kerry speaking today in Seattle to young supporters said there is something genetically wrong with anyone who denies Man is not the chief cause of Global Warming. I would hope this was just another attempt at humor, tying to look hip to a young crowd, but somehow I think he was serious. I heard the quote on conservative talk radio KVI

Thomas Friedman is a respectable journalist? Respected by whom?...subscribers to the “International Socialist Review”?I’ve tried to read several Friedman columns. I even tried to force myself to listen to him on Public Television. The man is not that respectable. He’s a pretentious liberal socialist. Why do you think he’s a columnist for the Times? God Bless Bill Buckley, but sometimes he says things that he simply can’t mean.

John Kerry speaking today in Seattle to young supporters said there is something genetically wrong with anyone who denies Man is not the chief cause of Global Warming.

He is right in a certain sense. The genetic defect he is referring to consists of having a completely functional brain and knowing how to use it. The defect is also known to cause those who possess it to break out in laughter when listening to the typical MSM news report.

Especially since most of the "warming" is an increase in night-time lows in the winter...and adjustments to the record.

Actually the Friedman article was commenting on the manipulation of science for political ends. Doing the reverse would have been equally bad. Buckley is off on this. There are better targets than Friedman who, for an NYslimes reporter, is borderline reasonable at times.

And you know what gets me is WHAT global warming is he talking about? Liberals keeps saying that, “humans caused global warming on earth”..WHAT global warming???

Global warming or a greenhouse effect is what happened to a planet like Venus (where there are no cars and no plant life by the way to suck up CO2) where temperatures regularly reach over 400 C. THAT is global warming!

On the other hand, earth which has billions of plants not to mention other life forms like bacteria that regulary use and need CO2 has had a temperature rise of about 0.12 and 0.22 C in the past unmpteen years.

This is hardly what could be classified as global warming. It could be from any number of causes! How do we know evaporation isn`t causing that temp rise? After all the evaporation of liquid water on Venus is what caused that planet to have a greenhouse effect. So I guess we should cut back on water? This whole concept is insane. Saying cars are producing too much CO2 is like saying plants are producing too much O2. There are a hell of lot more plants than cars but I don`t see Al Gore screaming about that. Hey we should cut back on all these plants producing O2 otherwise all the plants may die!

Add "acid rain" and "the homeless" to that decade.

Oh, and the real biggie: "We're all gonna die from AIDS because if we don't find a cure today it will spread to the general population tomorrow and it's ALL Reagan's fault."

There is, now and then, offsetting good news. The next report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we have learned, will be less pessimistic than earlier reports. It will predict, e.g., a sea-level increase of up to 23 inches by the end of the century, substantially better than earlier IPCC predictions of 29 inches — and light-years away from the 20 feet predicted by former Vice President, Al Gore.

Has Gore clearly predicted a 20-foot sea level rise by the end of the century in any forum (i.e., speaking) or any media (film, book, newspaper column, statements before Congress)?

IF not -- and I believe I am correct in believing that he has not -- what is the term for the type of writing Buckley uses in this paragraph?
