Tony Snow - from Bill O'Reilly for BillOReilly.com

Tony Snow
By Bill O'Reilly for BillOReilly.com
Thursday, Mar 29, 2007
My friend Tony Snow is once again fighting for his life, his cancer having returned. You may remember the White House press secretary underwent six months of chemotherapy after cancer was found in his colon two years ago. His mother died of cancer and Tony was very aggressive in treating his condition.

Now cancer lesions have spread to his liver and Tony Snow is once again facing a painful struggle to defeat the disease. But if anyone can beat the beast down, it's Snow. He is a courageous guy.

I worked with Tony Snow at the Fox News Channel and I often gave him jazz for the button-down conservative views he put forth as an analyst. "Snow," I would bellow on the air, "where's Dick Cheney hiding?" Stuff like that. Snow would give it right back to me with a wry smile. Even die-hard liberals liked the guy's style. He has charisma.

Tony Snow was perhaps President Bush's best hire. One of the reasons I cut the Bush administration some slack is that Snow answers my questions on and off the record. And if Tony Snow tells me something, I can bank it. He doesn't lie or mislead, ever.

Tony Snow would never work for people who "lied" to get us into a war for "oil." He would never defend policies that he deemed dishonest or harmful to Americans. He has three young children, a smart wife, and a loyal extended family. He loves them as he loves his country, with passion and selflessness.

So, I believe what Snow tells me and I believe he's looking out for all Americans. There is no question the Bush administration has failed in Iraq. Snow knows it but has not given up, unlike many Americans. He believes, and I do too, that America tried to do a noble thing in Iraq, but the religious and social hatred that envelopes that country has prevented victory.

When I examine the other side, the Bush-haters and far-left zealots, I compare them to Tony Snow. If I'm in a foxhole, if my life depends on another person, do I want Snow or Howard Dean?

I think you know the answer.

I truly wish I could do something for Tony Snow and for Elizabeth Edwards, for that matter. But there's little to be done. Cancer took my father as I sat there powerless. It takes millions of people.

But Tony Snow will fight hard with dignity and faith. During his first go-around, I often talked to him during his strenuous treatment and rehab. Never once did he mention pain or his ordeal. He was always optimistic and directed the conversation outside himself.

There is no explaining life. Tony Snow is a good man who does good things all the time. By all accounts, Elizabeth Edwards is a good woman. Both are now in battles beyond their control for reasons no one knows.

But I do know one thing. Tony Snow makes this country a better place. He deserves your prayers and respect.

It would have been a nicer tribute if Bill stopped saying we have failed in Iraq. It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.

Extremely good post. I rank Mr. Snow amongst the few honest ones left. My prayers for him are every bit as strong as he is a man. May God grant him and Mrs. Edwards healing.

(Is there any way to have the FR skeleton replaced with another Freepathon ad given the subject matter?}

I emailed Tony Snow in 2000 and he replied. Twice.

He was very personable. He had a sense of humor. He said he would use a phrase I coined--and I have long since forgot the phrase but will not ever forget how decent he can remain under fire.

That is a measure of a large person, somebody with gravitas but hold the hot air.

And that's how he'll defeat this business of recurrence.

He can stand and deliver daily before the jabbering fairies of falsehood, correct their facts and syntax, and add wit to end the refrain.

Making it our pleasure to add ten thousand interlaced prayers as back up.

When Bill is right, he is just about near perfect. The trick with his view on Iraq is to let him finish. I have never heard him say, “Iraq is a disaster End of Story”. He gives his reasons, and always backs it up with balance for the efforts of President Bush and our military.

Tony Snow is the polar opposite of Bill, I would take him home to meet my mother. My brothers would want a word with Bill...! Prayers and best wishes for Tony and his family.

Well, we have failed. Of course one could have said in December, 1944 that we had failed to defeat Germany, since we were basically stalled on the German border. Now our victory seems inevitable, but it didn’t look that way in December, 1944, to Patton’s men fighting the Saarland or Hodge’s men in the north, and who knows what would have happened if the Paratroopers had not held Bastogne.

That was certainly the history of the Great War, although it is hard to say that France was victorious. They lost their best and brightest and what we see now are the off-spring of those who were left.

>> O’Reilly: “There is no question the Bush administration has failed in Iraq.”

O’Reilly is using past tense to describe an ongoing situation. He’s not illiterate and I’m sure his editorials are proofread. For what reason did O’Reilly set down a deliberate falsehood; certainly not to encourage the forces currently in battle.

Tony Snow is a fine man. I am sure O’Reilly tried, but even this article fails to do the man justice. May God heal Tony and allow him to live a long life. We need men like him in charge in Washington.

As for O'Smiley..he has failed as a journalist. We haven't given up on him yet and he isn't finished with his career, but there is no question he has failed.

I can’t believe some comments from a few writers who used that great homage to Tony Snow to introduce negativity rather than staying on topic. Snow deserves every word he gets in praise of his great personality and choosing to be on the honesty path, using respect and truth in his work even when surrounded by those who use self promotion to push rhetorical garbage.

Some (there are always a few) who have chosen to desecrate this uplifting topic with an unthinking and oafish opportunity taken to bash O’Reilly with their personal opinion which is of little import here.

Get over yourselves - this is a different kind of thread than the ones you obviously prefer.

Take your insults elsewhere - they do not belong here.

Mr Snow won my admiration and respect when he did his commentary spot on his weekly show on FOX back on Sunday 9/16/01. He seem to lose that patented TV analyst rancor we all come to expect, especially after enormous tragedy, in which we all get caught up in watching for the latest...anything new, latest developments..you know the routine.
It was towards the end of the broadcast and referring to his prepared notes he started to talk as if he was sitting next to you on your porch. A nice guy, a good friend who lived next door, he let his emotions show, no longer referring to his notes, he spoke looking directly into the camera, went deeper into his own feelings, emotional to say the very least....he got down to that level where he was revealing his concerns about others and I think he didn’t realize just how deep he was going....the tears began to build, the voice started to crack, and he found himself in a uncomfortable situation. He recovered and finished the broadcast, but for me, he left an impression in which, if I had ever had to tell a story,or recount a incident and I wanted the truth to be told, he would be one of the very few I would trust to do it.
