WASHINGTON, (AP) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will address the Israeli Knesset on Sunday evening as part of a congressional trip to the Middle East.

The San Francisco Democrat is traveling with Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim member of Congress. They arrived in Israel on Friday.

The lawmakers plan to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and to travel to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Ellison's spokesman, Rick Jauert.

How is she going to get from Israel to an Arab country without a passport?

When my old company traveled to the Middle East, we had to make sure that there was NO Israeli stamp in their passport, else there was no entry into any of the surrounding countries.

Of course, being a democrat pig, she is more equal than others and doesn't need visas, passports, etc.

Obviously this is going to be some kind of outreach by the Democrats to Israel, probably to reassure them that the Dems aren't REALLY going to abandon them.

But then there's Ellison, the Muslim newbie. Why indeed is he along? Whether Pelosi intends to or not, such a visit by the Speaker to a foreign country will be received as a statement of US policy. I suspect the reason for Ellison is to imply a new direction of "fairness" (read: Palestinian support) in future policy. Look, we got us a real live Muslim in Congress now, and Americans elected him.

If I were Israeli, the message I would suspect is clear: US policy is changing. Out of Iraq, out of playing favorites with Israel, so to speak. Our new approach will be more "balanced". I would LOVE to hear what Pelosi and Ellison say to Palestinian groups over there...
