DUBLIN: Irish rock star and rights campaigner Bono received an honorary British knighthood yesterday in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work. "I couldn't be more proud," the U2 singer said at a ceremony at the British ambassador's residence in Dublin.
"I would like to thank Her Majesty's ambassador for pinning this award on me in my hometown, and the band for not bursting my balloon,'' he said in remarks carried on U2's website (www.u2.com).
Bono is now a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or KBE, but as he is an Irish citizen he will not be able to use the title 'Sir'.

The Knight Flight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empie deserved a medal in 2003, when he forgot his hat--- and had it flown to Italy 1st Class via British Airways for $1700.
Rock star Bono muzzled?
Thought you might be interested. : )
That was the B Sharps playing on the roof.
The standard of Knighthood just keeps dropping, it would appear.
Would seems like a step down, seeing as how Mr. Hewson seems to often fancy himself as God.

I agree.
Rock star Bono Benighted
There, that's better. And
I thought he was dead, and why wasn't Cher knighted, too?
What's Bono's take on the 15 hostages? Is he for it or against it?
I loved the part where Barney started dating a Japanese conceptual artist.
Once boastful of "ruling the waves", Britain now wonders how its sailors could be taken at sea.
Spiral on down, old chaps...
Ya know, it just occurred to me after all these years since I saw that episode that there is no B sharp.
I am really slow.
I mean, isn't it the least prestigious...the one they give to trashy rock stars like Elton John, the Beatles etal. just as a "gesture" to show the UK is hip to pop culture?
It's not like they gave this idiot any real honor like Knight of the Garter, or of the Thistle...right?
I used to enjoy his music until he started voicing his opinions. It's that kind of logic that keeps me from enjoying quite a bit of music.
Money for nothing,
chicks for free, and the guy gets
to be a knight, too?!
How does Cher feel about this?
"The standard of Knighthood just keeps dropping, it would appear."
Well, they have to compete with the Nobel Peace Prize.
Really. I was OK with McCartney, because of his current involvement with classical music, the Beatles' achievement and their contribution to the British economy. But Elton John and Mick Jagger raised my eyebrows. Of course this is all directed now by the Labor government. Good thing Sid Vicious has gone where no one is knighted.
It's kind of amazing how all of these bozos who, just a few decades back called for the overthrow of Britain and the West in general, are now all good servants of the Crown.
I don't know that any of these guys ever talked about overthrowing the government. I think that was more Crosby-Stills-Nash and Young and the Jefferson Airplane. The Beatles wrote a song specifically rejecting revolution. Mick Jagger has always claimed to be a man of wealth and taste and has a degree from the London School of Economics. Elton John's hobby horse, is, of course, gay rights, but he can't be too anti-establishment because he was pals with Princess Diana. I don't know about U2.
Take a look at the lyrics of the Stones' "Street Fighting Man." And the Beatles didn't reject revolution but, unlike the Stones, massaged the lyrics to get airplay. And, of course, Bono gave us "Bloody Sunday." Elton John, I suppose, is a good gay knight.
Don't sell him short...he's a damn near perfect queen.
I never took Street Fighting Man seriously because it talks about overthrowing "the King" and I couldn't figure out what king that would be. As he said, there's just no place for a street fighting man.
You forgot the Barf Alert!
When I think of a knight, I think of someone like Sir Edmund Hilary or Sir Bernard Spilsbury. But I think it all started going down hill with David Lloyd George.
You're thinking of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" which was a rejection of Abbie Hoffman and his bullshit. Jagger is pretty much saying he's stuck cheerleading for the real "revoluntaries."
LOL!
I just remember Barney walking into Moe's Tavern with his Japanese Conceptual Artist girlfriend. Barney orders a beer, and Moe turns to the girlfriend and asks, "What'll it be?"
She says, "I'll have a single plum, floating in perfume, in a man's hat."
Moe says, "Here ya go."
I'll have to practise my curtsy.
He is still a UK citizen so he would still be taxed in the UK for any personal income. I don't think moving your corporation to a more tax friendly nation would be considered a tax dodge at all.
Many wealthy european celebrities actually transfer their citizenship to Switzerland as that country is intelligent enough to actually negotiate individually with wealthy immigrants for a set flat amount per year. Many F1 drivers, including Michael Schumacher did this.
I don't agree with his politics but he doesn't seem like a bad guy at all.
LOL!
Wouldn't be fair to all the respectable "Barf Alerts!" out there... : )
