BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno encouraged lawyers to become more familiar with forensics to prevent innocent people from going to prison.
Reno told members of the Manatee Bar Association on Wednesday that ``there's nothing more horrible (than) being told you're going away for life for a crime you didn't commit. Let's file charges based on solid evidence.''
Reno is on the board of directors for the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization that has helped exonerate 197 prisoners through DNA testing.
The former Miami-Dade County state attorney also discussed concerns for juvenile justice, child welfare and increasing crime rates.
Every child should have prenatal care, basic education, affordable housing, proper medical care and excellent teachers, Reno said.
``Start with the young ones now,'' she said. ``We can see the difference.''
As attorney general, Reno faced several high-profile events, including the Branch Davidian standoff in Waco, Texas, the Oklahoma City bombing and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

in a related story Reno suggested that lawyers should become as familiar with the law as possible, and that criminal defense lawyers should try to learn as much about criminal law as they can. /s/

Janet Reno encourages lawyers to become familiar with forensics I think the Branch Davidians' lawyer should become familiar with the forensics on the front door of their church. Oops! They can't because the FBI under Reno "lost" it.

Most lawyers I know who are involved in criminal cases are familiar with forensics. IN fact many take classes.
On a related note Comissioner Bud Selig told baseball managers to be aware of the bunt rule.
