Let’s settle this once and for all...
Having done actual research on this subject to get to the truth, I’ve concluded that Sen. Thompson a) is, and has always been, opposed to the notion of a constitutional right to an abortion; b) is, and has always been, in favor of banning partial-birth abortion; c) is, and has always been, in favor of restrictions on most later-term abortions (post-first trimester); and d) is now across-the-board pro-life, but in the 1990s, was in favor of earlier-term abortions (first-trimester) remaining legal...
If you pick up the 1994 post-election edition of National Right to Life news, you’ll see a list of pro-life Senators elected in the class of ‘94. Thomspon was on the list, with a cross by it.
The cross stood for Thompson’s support for legal 1st Trimester abortion. He was generally pro-life, but supported abortion during the 1st trimester...
As such, Thompson’s voting record is consistent with his 1994 position: he’s pro-life on everything other than making first-trimester abortions illegal...
What seems to be clear is that Thompson has never supported the constitutional right to an abortion, has never supported partial-birth abortion, and has never been opposed to restrictions on post-first-trimester abortions. Further, Thompson’s opposition to Roe means that he’d have no problem with states prohibiting or regulating first-trimester abortions. Thompson has only parted with pro-lifers on first-trimester abortions, a stance that a) may have since changed over the past decade and that b) is moot for all practical purposes, as sufficient political support for banning these abortions at the federal level just doesn’t exist regardless of what the Supreme Court does.

I still have a hard time believing this is the most important issue to alot of you.
Thompson is the best thing going right now and I am fairly certain he will be the nominee. There is just no other electable candidate that really appeals to grassroot conservative voters. Sorry, but conservatism is not dead reguardless of what you read in the New York Times.
Abortion is the single biggest net gain issue the GOP has, whether you like it or not.
Timmy Russert qasked him for his stand on abortion and without hesitation Thompson said 'I'm pro-life'. He didn't blink, mitigate, hesitate or ameliorate. No weasel words, no ifs ands or buts. I believed him and I'll vote for him if he runs.
Dunno...but if he doesn't start some serious fund-raising right now, it won't matter what he thinks about ANYthing.

I heard him talk about it on Hannity's radio show. He is opposed to it under most all conditions except for rape, incest, and certain major, major health issues. He said then it should be left up to the mother. That is what I got out of what he said.</p>
It doesn't matter if I like it or not...I just think we're in a fight for our existance and abortion will be moot if we lose the WOT. HOWEVER, my mind is open to Thompson. I like his Paul Harvey stuff, he's a great communicator, which is really important. You do know he's on wife number 2, and she's young enough to be his daughter, right? You're not going to freak out about that, are ya?
Believe it. The leader of our prayer group once said he is in agreement with Democrats on almost every social issue except abortion. Because of that one issue, he can never vote for a pro-abortion Democrat.
What does that mean?

I am having a very difficult time accepting a candidate who supported McCain-Feingold. Forgive me for thread hijacking, but for me abortion is not the primary consideration in choosing a president. His supporting a clear assault on the First Amendment is much more of an issue to me.
However, I'm going to nitpick a little so bear with me.
One of the most important beliefs of pro-lifers is that meaningful human life begins at conception, which is why abortion is mass murder.
It is this fundamental belief that has caused Bush to take such a firm stance on ALL issues relating to abortion, including embryonic stem cell research.
I'm curious what Thompson believes on this issue. Does he support restricting abortion after the first trimester because he believes meaningful human life begins at the second trimester?
