The Republicans don't have any heroes because they don't have any leaders. Good leadership leads to hero status with the conservative crowd. Reagan had it, today's politicians do not. Reagan left the conference in Reykjavik because it was the right thing to do, not the popular thing. He identified the USSR as the 'Evil Empire' because it was what he believed, not because it would boost his approval numbers. Conservativism needs a leader who is willing to make tough, sometimes unpopular decisions based on what is right, not on what the pollsters say will boost approval ratings.

I would argue that GWB has had a spine of steel and is doing whats right, against UN, world, and even US opinion in Iraq.

I agree that he has been solid in the WOT, and I respect him for that. However, he has not let the military fight agressively in Iraq, because it would be unpopular. Fallujah, for example, should have been leveled the first time it was a problem, but that would not have been popular. As a result there are still problems in Fallujah and elsewhere because the military was handcuffed.

In fact the best-selling author's eyes are narrow and hawkish.

Actually she sort of does have hawkish eyes. Only thing is, the author has no idea what a hawk's eyes look like.
