Bush's Thermopylae
NeoVista ^ | 03/21/2007 | Bob Gonzalez

From all indications, the last two years of the Bush Administration will promise concerted, if not singular, attention upon the American commitment in Iraq. No serious effort to address other important issues of our day is on the horizon. Social Security, School Choice, Health Care Costs, Tort Reform, forget it! Savage Libby, Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Cheney, or DeLay with scurrilous, hyperbolic accusations, no problem! But, dare to challenge the mission in Iraq and face the vehement wrath of the veto hammer. This is Bush’s Thermopylae. This is Bush’s last stand. If he fails here, then everything else will matter very little.

In Hollywood’s treatment of this historic battle, the Democrats are skillfully represented by the caricature of the Persian Xerxes as a grotesque creature; symbolic of his inner, aberrant lust for power. Like the Persian horde of old, Thermopylae is a pass that the Democrats are compelled to cross. They have abandoned their previous position supporting the liberation of Iraq and have committed all of their political capital to the reversal of this effort. They have placed themselves upon a battlefield were all prospects appear grim. For the Democrats, success at Thermopylae will be at great cost. The Democrats would be damaged by staking claim to the aftermath of defeat in Iraq - which could be worse than Vietnam from a geopolitical perspective when the real Persians exert their influence.

On the other hand, the Democrats have suffered greatly in the 80s and 90s by being on the wrong side of history concerning Nuclear Weapons and Détente. Can the Democrats afford to be wrong again regarding another world-defining international challenge? They have maneuvered themselves between being responsible for another fall of Saigon and being the buffoons of history clamoring for the end of SDI and the Arms Race only to serve as witnesses to their own befuddlement at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Their only hope is that, in the face of persistent force, that the Greeks at Thermopylae lose heart and abandon their post. For the Democrats to win, the Greeks at Thermopylae must fail.

Well, if all these witch hunts and show trials don't wake Joe and Jane up, I don't know what will. As usual, the perverts in the DemocRATik Party are trying to "probe" everyone in sight.

Yup, Thermopylae but sans a king Leonidas with the GOP acting more like Thesbians than Spartans...what is interesting about Thermopylae is that it let to the overwhelming Greek victory over Persia in the naval battle of Salamis, therefore preserving Greece for the birth of democracy and notables such as Pericles. It is hoped that 2008 will feature a similiar fate for the "enemies" of democracy but I fear that won't happen. Bush had the opportunity to mirror another great Greek--Alexander--and employ overwhelming force as Alexander did against the Persians and Babylonian (forefathers of terrorists in Iraq/Iran) so that they were never again a threat. He chose the path of the 300 (a token force against superior odds) but not the purpose that the Spartans had (to gain time for an Athenian victory at Salamis.

Right on ... Treason is the only reason the Spartans were defeated.

Of course we have our own treasonous, they are called Democrats.

I think the dems with the "slow bleed" strategy are shooting themselves in the foot.

Also perhaps swing voters will learn exactly what people like Pelosi are all about. Swing voters had no clue even who she was before.

Wishful thinking. Most people's historical perspective doesn't go back more than a couple of months. For the rest of us, there's the MSM to rewrite history to suit the requirements of the moment.

Yes, the treason of the republicans who are constantly throwing marbles under Bush's feet. History won't forget that either.

The RATS are more like the backstabbing politicians that the king's wife had to put up with.

what is interesting about Thermopylae is that it let to the overwhelming Greek victory over Persia in the naval battle of Salamis

Yes the Spartans fought bravely at Thermopylae and sacrificed their lives rather than yield ground to the Persians. Following that, Salamis was a great victory for the Athenians, but not before they abandoned Athens and the Persians burnt it to the ground. Victory does not come cheap.

Bush had the opportunity to mirror another great Greek--Alexander--and employ overwhelming force as Alexander did against the Persians and Babylonian (forefathers of terrorists in Iraq/Iran)

Alexander was a brilliant general who crushed the Persian Empire. He was also a reckless drunkard who slaughtered men, woman and children, letting his soldiers loot cities for booty, raping the woman and selling them into slavery before burning those cities to the ground. Whatever there might be to admire about Alexander the Great, there is just as much to despise. I would prefer to see a George Bush with a bit of Teddy Roosevelt in him.

while i admire the sentiment and passion, my thoughts on swing voters are quite different

swing voters are not influenced by history

swing voters do not learn

swing voters are more akin to non-thinking sheep

they need pre-packaged sayings and thoughts that they will repeat endlessly

the dems long ago figured this out with 'it's the economy, stupid' soundbites that make the sheep feel smart when they say them

the republicans want to painstakingly teach each voter they seek to convert to conservative principles, and to appreciate the nuance in complicated subjects

the dems instead do whatever is necessary to coerce their vote

reagan, rush, freepers, have ridiculed and cajoled swing voters with simple, uncomplicated themes that cut right through (are you better off than you were 4 years ago?, etc.)

bush by comparison is a complete gop disaster

incoherent on protecting america (why fight in iraq while leaving the u.s. southern border wide open?)

inconsistent on tax reduction (cut taxes, but then spend like a drunken wildman on programs nobody wants and mislead a generation that gop principles are fiscally irresponsible?)

incongruous on loyalty (he'll stand beside you even if you're an incompetent boob, until the dems ask for your head, then feed you to the lions and run like a girl)

inept on leadership (let's fight wars, but not too hard, and leave mosques and schools as safe-havens from which to launch attacks, and let's not upset pakistan and syria, nor pursue sadr, because we're politically-correct)

Most people's historical perspective doesn't go back more than a couple of months.

That is why they need to be reminded.

For the rest of us, there's the MSM to rewrite history to suit the requirements of the moment.

This is effective only against people who either do not know the facts or are not privy to countering viewpoints - Democrats.
