Sam Brownback: Protect Unborn Children From Abortion, After Birth Too

Manchester, NH (LifeNews.com) -- Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback is strongly pro-life and, as a result, opposes the killing of unborn children from abortion. But he told the audience at a New Hampshire campaign stop that he strongly supports protecting children after birth as well.

Pro-life advocates are frequently criticized by those who back abortion as caring for children only before birth but not afterwards.

Seeking to respond to that criticism in a state that's not known for its pro-life views, Brownback told a luncheon audience that he's "pro-life, whole life" and that candidates who say they are pro-life can't abandon babies after birth.

"I believe the child in the womb should be protected," Brownback said, according to an AP report.

"America is best when she's good," he added. "It's that fundamental goodness that makes America great, and that goodness to me is based upon our belief that every single person is unique, beautiful and sacred."

"We're going to overturn Roe v. Wade," he said to cheers from the audience. "The right to abortion is not in the Constitution."

But he also added that "we should also protect the person that's in poverty, and the child that's in Darfur, and working with prisoners so they don't have so much recidivism and always back in the system."

Kelly Roy, a member of Operation Outcry, a group that helps give a voice to women who have had abortions and regret their decision, told the Concord Monitor she's made up her mind and will vote for Brownback in the state's second-in-the-nation primary.

"Sen. Brownback is pro-life across the board," she said.

Saw a Brownback for president bumper sticker. First one I've seen on the GOP side. I've seen lots of '08 stickers on the left.

I like Brownback, but he's a non-starter.

I want a Fred Thompson bumper sticker.

Has Brownback actually ever introduced legislation to protect the unborn?

I like Sen. Brownback, but you have to have charisma and national recognition, if your going to beat Obama. Only Fred Thompson and Rudy G. have that.

From Lou Engle’s website:

Raise up a Wilberforce Candidate

1 Corinthians 4:1-2- Let a man so consider us as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

It is in my heart to speak concerning a remarkable prophetic journey that I have been led to follow. I speak it at the risk of misunderstanding both by the body of Christ and the nation at large. But as in all prophecy we see in part and we prophesy in part. Nonetheless, it is incumbent upon me to be faithful and I am more afraid of not sharing my story and its possible prophetic significance for this nation, than to be misunderstood. I am under a requirement from heaven to steward my story, which I believe is really prophecy. Therefore, the readers are required to judge it as such and then respond accordingly.

Recently, I was at a gathering of major leaders of the Charismatic and Pentecostal churches in America. In that gathering, there was a panel of leaders discussing the church in the upcoming elections. I was amazed to hear one leader encourage us to vote on the basis of one candidate’s leadership gift rather than on his moral character. I think the man was expressing a major issue that must face the church of America at this hour. My response to this suggestion was that the church, in particularly those of the charismatic persuasion, should hear God and judge prophecy. Then I told them what I now write to you and exhort you to judge.

In 1999, I received a prophetic word that I was going to be connected with a man named Senator Sam Brownback. I basically put the prophecy on file. Then 7 months before The Call DC, I rented a condo facing the Supreme Court building and the ACLU building, so I could mobilize The Call and have a place to pray. What a great place to pray. A week after I rented the condo, I received a phone call from the owner saying, “there is a man named Senator Sam Brownback, his condo just burned down and he would like to stay in your condo.” For 7 months I was privileged to share the condo with this dear man. I have rarely met such a humble man, a man of devotion to the Lord, and a steadfast commitment to help the poor, the oppressed, and uphold the standards of righteousness and justice in our US Government.

Then to my surprise, some of our young intercessors began to have dreams concerning Sam and running for the presidency of the United States. One young lady dreamed that she saw many people wearing campaign buttons with the word IKE on it. She didn’t even know there was an IKE, but in the dream she knew that is was Sam Brownback’s campaign for the presidency. IKE stands for Eisenhower; he was elected president and came from the state of Kansas. What are the chances of a young lady who has never heard of IKE dreaming such a dream? It must be judged as prophecy. Over the years, I spent much time with Sam and was moved by his compassionate stand for justice but also his deep commitment to truth and righteousness. He has stood firm on pro-life issues, has fought for the marriage amendment, has taken up the causes to end the sex slave trade, to fight for the oppressed in the Sudan, and has stood as a deep ally for Israel.

So one day I was stirred to ask him if he had every thought about running for president. He replied saying, “ years ago as an intern in DC, I was jogging and the impression came suddenly upon me that I would be the president of the United States.” Above it all, he has been a great friend that I could pray with.

As I write this, I have just come out of my third viewing of the movie Amazing Grace and the story of a great man named William Wilberforce, who was used mightily in England, as a parliamentarian to end the slave trade. God is using this movie to highlight one of the great heroes of justice in world history. But there is a danger of lauding such a man and refusing to become like him. Jesus said, “Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous (this movie is a monument to the righteous) and say if we had lived in the days of our fathers we would have not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets… That on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah… Assuredly I say to you all these things will come on one generation.” (Matthew 23:29-36)

This movie is a monument that adorns a righteous man and we say, had I lived in those days in England, we would have cried against the slave trade. We say, had I lived in the days of American slavery, we would have cried out for the liberation of the slave. (Most Christians in the south and in the north did not.) And we say, if we had lived in the days of segregation, we would have gone to the streets singing for the freedom of the black man to vote and go to the best schools. And, therefore, we become witnesses against ourselves because we live in the days of the holocaust of abortion and our voice is silent just like the church in past generations. We have chosen comfort and peace and went AWAL on the day the Lord marched out to war for justice. Therefore, Jesus says, “ The blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world maybe required of this generation… Yes I say to you it shall be required of this generation.” (Luke 11:50-51)

Lord give us repentance and give us the spirit of Wilberforce who said, “ let the policy be what it might, let the consequences be what they would, I am from this time determined that I would never rest until I have effected its abolition.”

At the end of my second viewing of this movie, my heart was so burning with God’s call that I stood up in front of the movie theater and begin to cry out in front of a full house, “ God, I pray that you would end the slave trade of abortion in America and that you would raise up a Wilberforce president who would end abortion and help urn this nation back to God.” Why should I cry out such a prayer? Because, in 2003, while flying home from Canada, I found myself reading a biography of William Wilberforce. As I read the following quote by Thomas Clarkson, a key actor in the abolition of the slave trade, the spirit of God fell upon me and I began to weep on the plane for the quote had become my calling. Clarkson wrote, “ I urge myself that never was any cause which had been taken up by man in any country or in any age, so great and important; never was there one, in which some much good could be done; never one in which the duty of Christian charity could be so extensively exercised; never one, more worthy of the devotion of a whole life towards it; and that, if a man thought properly, he ought to rejoice to had been called in existence, if he were only permitted to become an instrument in forwarding it in any part of its progress.”

The quote possessed me and the Lord spoke deeply and personally to me, “ You will raise up a prayer movement to end abortion in America.” Some time later, while sitting in a conference, a prophetic leader turned to me and said, “The mantle of Wilberforce is upon you.” But I was no political leader, yet I knew that governmental intercession is how history was shaped and that Wilberforce surrounded himself with a community of conscience, who stood with him, researched for him, and raised up intercession that fueled his cause.

Some time later, while visiting Sam Brownback, I saw books on Wilberforce that he was reading. Wilberforce is one of his heroes, and I pondered, could this man be a Wilberforce who will end the slave trade of abortion in the high places on the US Government. What are the chances that a movie heralding this hero would be released as such a time as this? Could it be the Lord is orchestrating his grand scheme, just as he did during the slave trade, to speak to the nation that it is time, not for leaders who run on the foundations of moral relativism, changing there views on abortion according to the shifting polls, to a man who will stand for the life of the unborn and the moral and physical health of the mother. God is going to drive a wedge into this nation over the issue of abortion. He drove slavery as a wedge and in the civil war a generation paid for the shed blood of the slave. It was required of that generation. I fear that the blood of the unborn will be visited on ours. Unless now we get a great awakening; unless now we hear the voice of the church rising out of its intimidating 501c3’s and its temptation to be politically correct but morally wrong. And maybe the elections of 2008 will be our choice that we make and we will say that we are either Pro-Life or Pro-Choice and that could be the dividing line, the very hinge of history upon which our nation shall either flourish or wander into moral oblivion.
