MIAMI A major recall of pet food has grown in scope, with an announcement by two major pet food companies that they will voluntarily call products made under their names by a major private label manufacturer.
Dog and cat food products from two more companies, Purina and Hills Science Diet, have been added to the list of recalled products made by Menu Foods.
The pet food is widely sold throughout North America under 48 different dog-food brands and 40 cat-food labels, including Iams (eyemz), Nutro and Eukanuba. The products are distributed by major retailers like Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.
Two other pet food companies -- Nestle Purina and Hill's Pet Nutrition -- are voluntarily recalling some of their products that are made by Menu Foods.
The Food and Drug Administration doesn't know yet what's wrong with the food. But Menu Foods says the recalled products were made with wheat gluten from a new supplier. That supplier has been replaced, and Menu Foods has stopped using the gluten.
At least 10 animals, one dog and nine cats, have suffered kidney failure and died after eating the tainted food.

Here is the link to the list of recalled pet foods.

I have been unable to find any official clear statement about that, however.
:-]
We better be watching the emergency rooms for an influx of poor elderly folks who are sick from eating this pet food because it is the only food they can afford due to their limited incomes on social security.
(This has been a 'blast from the past' liberal reminder of uncaring Reagan government conservatives.)
My dog's Science Diet prescription formula costs more than regular people food. How poor do you have to be to resort to eating dog food?
What I haven't seen is the evidence that specifically links the animal deaths to the food. Statistically 10 deaths over a few days doesn't seem like much.
The Hill's Science Diet recall seems to only be affecting their cat food.
Just another media driven frenzy.....
I feed my Yorkies Royal Canin (PetSmart), which is not on the list.
I always figured Science Diet was crap, but this clinches it. Made in the same factory as the cheapo food from the same animal byproduct slurry. "Wheat gluten" my a**, it's the other animal byproduct stuff that normally just kills the kidneys a bit slower than it has recently.
Even though initially, the Walmart Special Kitty I had was NOT on the recall list, it NOW is on the list..I also have the Hill's Pricey stuff from the Vet. Now, I have to check the dates on it.
I think my kitty's are going to be eating food cooked by me for awhile. They are getting tired of the canned Friskies and 9 Lives which I hope doesn't end up on the list.
Every single story on this that I've read fails to mention who this mystery supplier is.
This, I think, the public has a right to know.
But then the MSM always seems to want to protect those that do us (and ours) harm.
Actually, don't discount the gluten connection. This kind of sounds like a wide-spread rotavirus infection and acute onset Celiac Disease.
"that normally just kills the kidneys a bit slower than it has recently."
Well, that would be correct for wheat gluten as well :P
The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities.
Makes me wonder if the new supplier is in the Middle East, hence, MSM not giving out the name. Nothing surprises me anymore.
so you think it's just the wet/moist foods? i thought i was in the clear, but my dog eats Science Diet dry. dang, i feel like i want to just feed him cooked chicken and be done with it, if i have to worry about the dog food being tainted! can you please ping me if you find the definitive word somewhere?
Thanks, I googled celiac. It sounds like some of the same symptoms the cat gets when the kidneys go bad.
I just got a baby Yorkie for Christmas, what a trip he is.
How many Yorkies do you have.
He is still on Eukanuba Puppy dry food. I have to go to the website and check that.
Just because it's made in the same factory doesn't mean it's the same stuff. Many products can come out of the same equipment and be totally different, the important part isn't the machine it's the ingredients, beer companies know all about that. We've got some sensitive stomached cats and SD is the only stuff they can eat that doesn't come back out 20 minutes later, and there are other Hill's companies we've tried, so there must be something different about it. Luckily we feed them dry so not effected by the recall so far.
What is the cause of the problem? Gluten is in a lot of feed. Is it wheat gluten or something else?
I agree. Wheat Gluten is an ingredient in a lot of human foods also. I think this problem may end up being much bigger than it already is.
Well, Menu Foods isn't much help. No Purina foods are listed at all on their website.
On one of the newscasts, they also mentioned thousands were ill. I think ultimately it could end up with more than just 10 dead.
Ping--two more companies added. (But not included on their website.)
I sometimes feed my cats Fancy Feast for treats--that's Purina, so I guess I'll stop since Menu Foods is not being very forthcoming about ALL the affected brands.
Here we go again ping
I feed my cat Hill's Science Diet, but he only eats dry food, so I hope we're ok.
Thanks for the ping. I'm afraid to feed any wet food right now but my elderly cat needs a prescription diet, so I hope that is safe.
I hope so too. It's a little scary. My dog has only had 3 brands of food since I got him. IAMS, Eukanuba & Purina One. Thankfully the numbers don't match. But I've apparently had a false sense of security about these companies.
The thing is, nine cats
have died. Nine. Now there's panic.
In a normal year,
don't a lot of cats
suffer from kidney failure?
I'm wondering if
this is another
media "shark attack" scare
where the statistics
really are unchanged
from the year before except
for more scrutiny . . .
You might need to talk to the vet just to be on the safe side.
I just feed my kitties dry food and a tiny bit of human consumption tuna twice a week. They are all over 13 years old and still healthy. I just stay away from that canned and pouch food.
I called--they don't know any more than we do. No one realy knows what "it" is. Why can't the FDA demand answers from menu foods? I think we have a right to know.
My sister and my sister-in-law both lost dogs last year to unexpected kidney failure. One (an English setter, age 9 years) was on Purina dry food, so I do not think the food was the cause. I think the other dog (a poodle age 11 years) was on senior Science Diet canned food.
Why don't you go buy some peanut butter from Wal Mart and eat the whole jar?
And nope, my dog's food is not on the list.

Thanks Lady. Our cats only eat dry food... They don't know what wet food even looks like.
What brand do you use? Do they make cat food?
Then switch to canned..... /s
I have heard that it is both the wet and dry that have used this particular suppliers wheat.
Please, before you poo poo this whole story, read the rest of it. THOUSANDS have been ill, and so far only 10 have died. If the thousands affected had kidney failure, they'll all die lots sooner, even if they recover somewhat. Perhaps you don't have pets--people who don't have them don't see what all the fuss is about. Those of us who do, know they are some of the best friends a human could ever have, and if something should happen to them, we'll grieve terribly.
Either this story is wrong, or Menu Foods isn't telling us the whole story, because nowhere on their site do they list any foods by Nestle or Purina. Infuriating, either way.
Local news said the recall list is now at 50 brands!
I've been giving them either Friskies or 9 Lives, will be glad when it's cleared up as to whether they are involved or not.
The MSM has done it's job well if the comments on this forum are any indication. BTW, new pup a year old, eats Science Diet Adult and there's no screaming and running around in circles in this household.
