Stallone Charged with Importing Steroids Down Under
TMZ ^ | Mar 12th 2007 | TMZ Staff

Just moments ago, Sylvester Stallone was officially charged with illegally importing performance and image enhancing drugs in a Sydney courtroom, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to Australian authorities, the 60-year-old action star, who did not appear in court, was caught at Sydney Airport with several vials of a steroid known as hGH (human growth hormone), during a random baggage check. Customs officials claim they found a total of 48 vials of the steroid after they raided Stallone's Sydney hotel room, limousine and private jet.

Stallone will be required to enter a plea on April 24. If found guilty, he faces a maximum fine of $22,000 American.

According to steroid.com, "Bodybuilders may illicitly self-administer hGH to improve size and strength, usually by subcutaneous injection into the lower abdomen." HGH has also "become a popular but expensive medication prescribed in anti-aging therapies."

Stallone was visiting Australia in February to promote his latest film "Rocky Balboa. Calls to Sly's rep were not immediately returned.

Reps for Stallone had no comment.

Stalone looks like he takes HGH. His facial bones grew which is one visible side effect and his muscular bulk is bigger than before. I bet he uses pretty heavy.

This particular drug is harder to detect than regular steroids.

Lol! That is about right. If he was not taking that stuff he would not look good enough to make this latest Rocky.

hGH is NOT steroids. It's a completely different hormone. That said I can understand why Sly might abuse it. It has, after all, been sold as a "rejuvenation" treatment and the Stallion is 60 now.

He should get off it, though. The side-effects of hGH abuse are pretty damn serious.

HGH is legal around here. A lot of my contemporaries (I'm 59) have been taking it. I was tempted for a while.....then I saw how grotesque they became. Sly is a mild example compared to some of the gym rats I know.

He may take HgH, as I do, under a doctor's supervision. This is the very first time I have heard of this treated as a crime anywhere in the world, and I am sure it is not a crime in Aurtralia.

Also, you can bet your bippies that Stallone has a prescription.

But, I do not believe that HgH is classified as a steroid.

I think Stalone is well aware of all the drugs available to
bodybuilders and was not sold anything. One thing about
HGH is that it hard to detect as it is not a testosterone based steroid.

Maybe it is in Australia.

I hear HGH is very expensive, though that would be no problem for Stalone.

Maybe it's cheaper in Australia? But, you'd think he could afford it here....lots of Longevity Clinic types in California are dispensing it....as well as elsewhere in the U.S.

I read that high doses pummel your pancreas and murder your joints.

Or is that prednisone?

HgH is a HORMONE....not a steroid.....but, some hormones are regulated....like Testosterone.

Low doses are fairly safe from what I have read.

hGH is illegal, along with steroids, because they're "so dangerous".

Meanwhile, in the real world, dozens of people die every year from plastic surgery just to look better....

hGH is not a steroid.

My guess is that Stallone was also managing this better than your average Joe, most likely on some sort of diabetic meds, as well.

Whatever the case, this is a slap on the wrist for him.

Use of HgH is not a crime in Australia. Trying to import it without declaring it to Customs is.

At least according to my daughter, the almost lawyer.

...steroid known as hGH (human growth hormone)

hGH is NOT A STEROID!

It's a polypeptide.

The uneducated people who work as "journalists," have confused structure with function. Although hGH will enhance certain physical characteristics (like steroids), it's structure, chemical properties, mode of action and source (the brain), are not steroidal.
