On a straw poll you pay for ballots! You don't have this much of a swing unless someone put in extra money for ballots. Have been involved in straw polls and it is a money maker for the County as you charge so much a ballot.

Whoever has the most ground folks usually wins. Rudy had no ground people while Hunter had his son and someone else and Romney had a lot of people there.

Let's not declare any winners yet folks, this straw poll over a year out doesn't prove much. McCain might have got a "bounce" from his Letterman appearance the other night !!!

Straw polls mean nothing when you pay for ballots. Here in the other year, we had a straw poll where some candidate plucked down $1100 to win the straw poll and lost the election. In another one, the candidate that just got in the race won because it was one ballot per person instead of selling the amount of ballots an individual would pay for. Seen them run both ways but never saw a straw poll all of a sudden have this many votes for one candidate in a row over anyone else.

The McCain Brand: Fixed and Not Likely to Change McCain's Charm Probably Will Not Work With Republican Primary Voters

March 1, 2007 — - John McCain looked great on "Letterman" Wednesday night, as relaxed and charming as any politician can be when they are on their game. McCain's charisma is an asset, but is it enough to revive his flagging presidential campaign?

In this era of media saturation, it is very difficult to rebrand a known quantity. It is as tough for Ford and Chrysler as it is for Britney Spears to be different from that which they have become in the public's collective mind. The same is true of Sen. McCain. He has a blazing personality, but that's only part of the brand. The other parts? McCain-Feingold, the Gang of 14, McCain-Kennedy, Lindsey Graham.
(snip)

Oh so that explains why Romney did so well then! /s

That is what is so odd that he didn't do well. The rule of thumb in straw polls is usually based on the amount of people getting out the people to vote and paying for their ballots. A ground presence usually translates to votes but it didn't in Romney's case which means his campaign is in trouble in SC.

You look at all factors. First a leading candidate without ground support should do pretty well; second how much support is there; and third is there a presence from a particular group that would help your candidate. Been involved in straw polls and don't remember someone with ground presence doing so poorly.

While I'll agree that the upstate of SC is more conservative than the low country, I do not agree that Spartanburg is "THE" Conservative bastion of the state. I would say Pickens county, which does not have a straw poll, is more conservative than any of the other counties.

I've said before and I stand by my saying now "John McCain cannot carry the State of SC in a primary".

Duncan Hunter was clearly the "winner" here.

Considering the varying amount of media coverage given to the different candidates, and the number of times McCain and Giuliani have been to SC, I still think Hunter was the big winner here.

I am a Hunter supporter but I realize he is a dark-horse in this race. I was pleasantly surprised at how close he came!

Wow, more bad grammar and worse punctuation.
