Carbon offset? That's like eating a double pie ala mode with whip cream and butterscotch syrup and then drinking someone else's diet coke as a calorie offset.

I used to think "Slim Fast" worked the same way. I'd stuff myself and then drink a couple of "Slim Fast" to cancel it out. I was over 400 pounds before I finally admitted that it just wasn't working. So I gave up the slim fast and lost 220 pounds.

I think Al Gore drinks a lot of "Slim Fast".

I like this one from Ghengis on another thread: I tried to explain to my wife that I was willing to buy "Blocks of Celibacy" from a little, old man down the road who was not using them. I had a few wild weekends planned. She failed to understand the math on how this would make me Philandering Neutral.

My understanding from a site called Green Switch Power is that each block of green power(150kw) is the equivalent to 1 acre of trees. I saw no details on how they came up with that. But, it stills reminds me of a scam.

Gore can suck up all the power he wants and pay a premium because he's the son of an oil tycoon and a wise investor on his own (Apple, Google, etc.) Laurie David, who married into Seinfeld millions, can fly privately all she likes and do the same. As for the rest of us, we're supposed to give up our SUVs for little Priuses (that don't get the gas mileage as advertised), ride our bikes, and sacrifice tax dollars for green power boondoggles (see the new Forbes for more on that).

Yep, it looks like Ol' Orwell was on target again. "Some animals are more equal than others."

Carbon Offsets:

If you cannot sell them on ebay; they are worthless.

Yup, they are worthless.

I am waiting for Al Gore to tell us "Hey, I picked up these 10 tons of carbon offsets from some homeless guy on the street that was not using his allotment since he didn't have a home. I gave him $50 for them.

I mentioned on another thread that I'm going to try to talk one of my kids into doing this as a science project to see if the they really do offset. As I heard it reported on Glenn Beck, his entire year's worth of "carbon footprint" could be offset for $160, which would be used to buy an energy efficient oven for someone in Eritrea. Sooooooooo......a wood-buring oven in Eritrea puts out as much carbon as Glenn Beck's family releases in a whole year with SUVs and the like? Sounds like a lot of that "carbon offset" money is going into "overhead". What a racket!

No, that's like eating your dessert AND someone elses dessert and paying him to drink a diet coke. Then averaging out the calories consumed by two people - to obscure the fact of your gluttony.

From Page Six (NY Post)- a blurb that illustrates the idiocy of carbon offsets- You have to admit there is a sort of karma in giving rich people gift certificates for recycled cow farts

http://www.nypost.com/seven/02272007/gossip/pagesix/penance_for_gas_guzzlers_pagesix_.htm

February 27, 2007 -- HOLLYWOOD'S wealthy liberals can now avoid any guilt they might feel for consuming so much non-renewable fossil fuel in their private jets, their SUVs, and their multiple air-conditioned mansions. This year's Oscar goodie bag contained gift certificates representing 100,000 pounds of greenhouse gas reductions from TerraPass, which describes itself as a "carbon offset retailer." The 100,000 pounds "are enough to balance out an average year in the life of an Academy Award presenter," a press release from TerraPass asserts. "For example, 100,000 pounds is the total amount of carbon dioxide created by 20,000 miles of driving, 40,000 miles on commercial airlines, 20 hours in a private jet and a large house in Los Angeles. The greenhouse gas reductions will be accomplished through TerraPass' [program] of verified wind energy, cow power [collecting methane from manure] and efficiency projects." Voila, guilt-free consumption! It reminds us of the era when rich Catholics paid the church for "dispensations" that would shorten their terms in Purgatory.

I read an interesting proposition some years ago. It was suggested that $15 billion each year in tree plantings would eliminate the so called excess CO2 that is claimed to be so awful.

$15 billion is chump change in the US economy. I asked a liberal friend that is a believer in CO2 & GW, if this is such a crisis, why isn't Gore out there calling for a tree planting solution? He could not give me an answer.

As I heard it reported on Glenn Beck, his entire year's worth of "carbon footprint" could be offset for $160, which would be used to buy an energy efficient oven for someone in Eritrea.

So what they've done is invent a brand new variant of communism. Take from the rich United States and give it to the poor in Eritrea.

Now that not even the left can pretend that socialism/communism is actually beneficial, they've come up with a new excuse to take from the rich, give to the poor, and take a percentage for themselves. They've got the solution, they're just desperate to find the problem.

No. Here's what it's like. It's like eating that double pie a la mode with whipped cream and butterscotch and then forcing SOMEBODY ELSE (You and Me) to pay for someone to recognize the fact that there is a starving African who is going hungry.

That's the liberal way.

I saw an earlier post which likened it to the "indulgence" fees paid to the Catholic Church. Go visit the town brother, lie, cheat, and steal. Then pay the church its fee, maybe do confession if you feel like it, then all all your sins are gone; your pure!
