Severe Poverty At Its Highest Level In America

US Corporate Profits At Highest Levels, Too

(CBS4) WASHINGTON -- The percentage of poor Americans who are living in severe poverty is the highest in thirty years, in which millions of working Americans are falling closer to the poverty line, and the gulf between this country’s ''haves'' and ''have-nots'' gets wider.

The McClatchy Company - owners of the Miami Herald – a CBS4 news partner - went through an analysis of 2005 census figures, the latest available, and found that nearly 16 million Americans are living in deep or severe poverty.

A family of four, with two children and an annual income of less than $9,903 -- half the federal poverty line -- was considered severely poor in 2005. So were individuals who made less than $5,080 a year.

At the same time, economists found worker productivity increasing sizeably since the brief recession of 2001, but wages and job growth have lagged behind. The share of national income going to corporate profits has dwarfed the amount going to wages and salaries. Median household income of working-age families, adjusted for inflation, has fallen for five straight years.

In about forty states, including Florida, the incomes of the bottom fifth of families grew slower than the incomes of the top fifth over the past twenty years, according to a study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

And now records show that 43 percent of the nation's 37 million poor people are in deep poverty -- the highest rate since at least 1975.

Nearly two out of three people (10.3 million) in severe poverty are white, but blacks (4.3 million) and Hispanics of any race (3.7 million) make up disproportionate shares. Blacks are nearly three times as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be in deep poverty, while Hispanics are roughly twice as likely.

And the poorest city in the country is the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., with 10.8 percent being severely poor.

So the War on Poverty, with all the trillions spent, hasn't done shit.

Why is it that the libs were crying failure, quagmire, and pull out approximately 1 week after we went into Iraq, yet 4+ DECADES after WOP, their only talking point is for 'more money'?

Here's the dirty secret. They are the ones the government provides for, those living on welfare and Social Security. Those who pat themselves on the back for supporting those programs should do a reality check.

That $5080 is only reported income ( welfare, WIC, SSS, etc.) It does not take into account working under the table, stealing and drug sales. I'm sure we would all be surprised at the Beemers, Lexus and hi def TV's these poor people have. This is no joke when you see what the LE confiscates when a drug bust is made.

Consider the source: "Center on Budget and Policy Priorities".

This is a left-wing socialist organization, frequently quoted by Paul Krugman of the New York Times. They specifically exclude all consideration of government funding (welfare) to make the "poor" look as if they receive no support at all. BS squared, perhaps cubed.

Because to liberals, there is no problem that the forced redistribution of wealth cannot solve. When their failed programs run out of money, their only response is that they need more money to solve the problem. Those who manage to work hard and succeed despite the government's intrusion in their lives are always at risk of losing more to socialism's grubby paws.

The wonderful, beneficent Democrats are in charge. Poverty no longer exists, our streets are once again paved in gold, life expectancy is on the rise after falling during the dictatorship of Bush and every man, woman and child in America has been lifted out of poverty by the gift of an increase in the minimum wage!

How dare these scurrilous television reporters print this tripe!!

Understanding Poverty in America

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/bg1713.cfm

The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:

Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

As a group, America's poor are far from being chronically undernourished. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and, in most cases, is well above recommended norms. Poor children actually consume more meat than do higher-income children and have average protein intakes 100 percent above recommended levels. Most poor children today are, in fact, supernourished and grow up to be, on average, one inch taller and 10 pounds heavier that the GIs who stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II.

=====

Remember, "poverty" is defined by INCOME, not ASSETS.
An old lady could be living in a million dollar home, all paid for, but because she only gets a few hundred dollars in SS, she is considered "poor".

Like there's a correlation between capitalism and poverty? Someone should inform the Marxist ignoramous who wrote the article that poverty is endemic in socialist countries. The depth of misery exceeds any degree of hardship the poor in our country face. We do have poverty but there's a way out. In Zimbabwe and Cuba the only way out is the grave. Ironically, if leftist policies were fully implemented in this country the poor in fact would be left even worse off than they are now. But you won't hear this pointed out by the Drive Bys/MSM. No, its business and Republicans who are evil.

I'd be willing to bet that 80% of these "severely poor" families are either:

1) headed by an illegal alien
2) headed by a high school drop-out
3) headed by a ex-con

And 95% of them get charitable or government assistance of one kind or the other.
