Israel seeks all clear for Iran air strike
telegraph.co.uk (excerpt) ^ | February 24, 2007 | Con Coughlin

Excerpt -

Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon.

A senior Israeli defence official said negotiations were now underway between the two countries for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" in the event of the Israeli government deciding on unilateral military action to prevent Teheran developing nuclear weapons.

Please God, let them have the balls to do it! It will get nasty, but it has to be done.

If this is true why are we reading about it? Doesn't sound like much of a plan if it is being reported in advance for all to see.

I doubt that we'll let the Israelis do it. Maybe we hate Iran as much as they do, but I doubt that Pentagon would want to deal with the fallout resulting from an Israeli Airstrike.

Oh great!

Don't ask the Iraqis for air rights: ask "the occupiers" and improve US-Iraq relations. /s

Just do it...we won't look. :^)

Would Israel even need to send aircraft? I'd think it has enough missiles, and missile smarts, to do it that way.

There will likely be much more "fallout" if something isn't done about Iran - literally.

We've got Iran surrounded by our positions in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's one of the unspoken reasons why we're in Iraq in the first place. And Hillary/Obama are willing to let Iran become a terrorist nuclear state. We can't afford to let that happen.

At the very least this is good Sabre ratteling on their part. If Israel does strike, the first response will be our ships out there. There is no way Israel does this alone.

I suspect that if Israel has to do it there will be "fallout" anyways. They only have one weapon that can signifigantly damage irans nuclear ambitions. It's not like they can get away with 24/7 refueled airstrikes from Israel.

If they can reveal this it could mean a plan is (or shortly will be) in motion. I hope Abby Dinnerjacket is relieving himself in his shorts right now.

Haaretz.com - Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh (Labor) denied Saturday that Israel was in negotiations with U.S. authorities on the issue.

It was thought the Israelis couldn't pull it off, due to the fact they would need refuelling. Apparently, this plane has the range to reach Tehran and return.

Length: 19.43 m
Height: 5.63 m

Range: 4,450 km
Weight Empty: 14,379 kg
Max. loaded: 36,750 kg
Power Plant 2 Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engines with a max. thrust of 29,000 lb. each
Weapons 20 mm. 6 barrelled cannon at wing root. Air-to air missiles: Python 3, Python 4, Sidewinder, Sparrow and AMRAAM. Varied air-to-ground missiles and guided bombs. Total carry load capacity: up to 11 tons

BTW....it's 1600 KM from Tel Aviv to Tehran. Release the hounds!

While they are passing through the designated Iraqi air corridor we will need to send up our tankers and quietly refuel them as at this moment they (Israelis) do not have the capability to do a "there and back" strike without refueling, nor do they have any refueling tankers in their inventory.
