Syrian President Assad in Tehran to discuss Iraq, Mideast issues

Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in Tehran on Saturday to discuss the situation in the Middle East and bilateral cooperation, the Iranian state-run television reported.

Assad was given a red-carpet welcome at the Presidential Palace in Tehran, the television said. Assad and President Mahmoud Ahmadinajed were to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including Iraq, the TV said without elaborating.

The United States has accused Iran and Syria of not doing enough to stop militants from crossing from these countries into Iraq to join the insurgency. Both have rejected the charges.

This is Assad's fifth visit to Iran since he took office in 2000. Iran and Syria have long been close allies. During the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, Syria was the only Arab country to support Iran.

During the past 10 years, Iranian companies have invested more than US$700 million (€533 million) in Syria
