Pelosi: Speaker’s Jet Not Good Enough for Me
gopusa.com ^ | Bobby Eberle

Posted on 02/16/2007 8:27:53 PM PST by Iam1ru1-2

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is proving once again that the Democrat label of “party of the people” is simply that: a label. Now, the San Francisco liberal is complaining about the size of the House speaker’s jet and requesting one much larger than Republican Dennis Hastert was provided.

As noted in a FOX News story, following the attacks of September 11, 2001, “the Pentagon agreed to provide the House speaker, who is second in the line of presidential succession, with a military plane for added security during trips back home.”

C-20 twin-engine aircraft

Republican Dennis Hastert was the first speaker of the House to be provided with this service, and he used a commuter-style jet to get him back to his home in Illinois. The jet at his disposal was a C-20 twin-engine aircraft. House Speaker Pelosi has requested the use of a C-32 aircraft, which is the military equivalent of a Boeing 757.

According to a story in the Washington Times, that Pelosi’s staff “was pressing the Department of Defense for an Air Force aircraft large enough to fly nonstop to San Francisco. She also has pressed to be able to include other members of the California congressional delegation, her family members and her staff on the plane.”

Republicans have accused Pelosi of “extravagance” and of wanting a plane where she could reward friends and associates. The Washington Times reports that “the Pentagon denied a request by Mrs. Pelosi to fly on a military aircraft to last weekend’s Democratic retreat in Williamsburg, a two-hour drive from Washington.”

In order to counter the criticism from Republicans and to turn the story around, Pelosi is now blaming administration officials for twisting the story:

These “misrepresentations could be coming from the administration,” she told reporters yesterday.

“One would only have to wonder why,” she said, though adding that she did not suspect President Bush “because he has impressed upon me over and over again the need for me to have the security that I need.”

C-32 Military Aircraft

The Pentagon said yesterday that Pelosi would not be provided with the C-32 which is estimated to cost in excess of $22,000 per hour to operate. In a letter to the speaker, the Pentagon’s ruling “essentially limits her to the commuter plane used by former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, which requires refueling to travel from Washington to Mrs. Pelosi’s San Francisco district. A second source, in the Bush administration, confirmed the contents of the letter.”

According to the Times, “the letter stipulates that the Air Force will only fly her between Washington and her San Francisco district and places limits on who can travel with her. ”

If there is one thing the voters made clear in November, it is that they are tired of politicians putting themselves over their constituents. They are elected to serve, not to be served. Pelosi has a long way to go to learn that lesson.

Excuse me, but the C-20 has a range of 4,275 miles! I thought a trans-continental flight was - what? - 3,000 miles? Allow some extra for contingencies - as any good pilot should do - and that seems plenty to get Her High-and-Mightiness to her home on the Left Coast!

You just don`t get it. Nancy has to have a plane that doesn`t need to stop in a military base for refueling. I mean, after todays vote, would she be safe on a military base? I hope not.

Let's activate the "Spruce Goose" for Speaker Pelosi..... she can have a nice big plane that can even land on water!!

Of course, it might not be the most reliable after 60 years of inactivity, and I don't know what its range might be....

An issue that generally seems to be left out of these discussions is that Pelosi's base in SF is 2,800 air miles from DC, versus Hastert's base in IL at 700 miles from DC.

Does 4 times the distance make it reasonable for this Speaker to use a larger and more comfortable plane?

I have no idea. I just think it odd that this rather significant fact is generally ignored in the stories.

I used to regularly fly across the country on business, and I can testify that an all day flight is highly wearing, when compared to a 2 hour flight.

In a letter to the speaker, the Pentagon’s ruling “essentially limits her to the commuter plane used by former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, which requires refueling to travel from Washington to Mrs. Pelosi’s San Francisco district.

Range: C-20B, 4,250 miles (3,698 nautical miles) long-range; C-20H, 4,850 miles (4,220 nautical miles) long range.

It is 2,450 air miles from DC to Sodom by the Sea. The C-20 could probably fly non-stop from DC to Anchorage, AK.

It states:

From San Francisco to Washington, DC is about 2840 miles

The witch could get there and almost all the back on the same tank of fuel. She'd be 1,405 miles short. Maybe, she could land in Kansas and just stay there.

Sherman; Yeah, I fly quite a bit on domestic and international too. I agree it is a bit draining. I also am checked out to fly G-IIIs and IVs, and they have WAY more than enough range to fly non-stop from DC to SanFran. The book answer, based on max pax weight and full fuel is 3655nm (C20B/GIII) and 4220nm (C20H/GIV) depending on the how many pax (they would have to be pretty fat to affect a distance to SanFran). SanFran is about 3100nm from DC. Andrews AFB (the VIP transportation squadron at the heart of this question) flys C-20Bs and C-20Hs, which are G-IIIs and G-Ivs respectively.

This NOT about range or refueling, this is about using a freakin' large bodied airliner with seating for 80+ (it could hold 300+, but its modified with a meeting room, VIP area, comm suite, and other extravegant stuff, I've been on board the actual aircraft she's requesting) versus a 12-16 pax biz jet. This is FRAUD, plain and simple. Don't let her security argument complicate it.

Welcome to Free Republic, I see you are newbie.

Primary Function: C-20B/H, special air and operational support airlift missions
Builder: Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.
Power Plant: C-20B, two Rolls-Royce Spey Mark 511-8 turbofan engines;C-20H, two Rolls-Royce Tay Mark 611-8 turbofan engines
Thrust: C-20B, 11,400 pounds each engine; C-20H, 13,850 pounds each engine
Length: C-20B, 83 feet, 2 inches (25.4 meters); C-20H, 88 feet, 4 inches (26.9 meters)
Height: 24 feet, 6 inches (7.5 meters)
Wingspan: 77 feet, 10 inches (23.7 meters)
Speed: 576 mph (501 nautical miles per hour) maximum
Maximum Takeoff Weight: C-20B, 69,700 pounds (31,610 kilograms); C-20H, 74,600 pounds (33,832 kilograms)
Range: C-20B, 4,250 miles (3,698 nautical miles) long-range; C-20H, 4,850 miles (4,220 nautical miles) long range

The plane can fly 3700-4200 nautical miles. Isn't that enough to get her saggy butt back to San Fransisco?

DC to San Francisco is 2128 nautical miles.

The G-III has a range of 3698 nautical miles. But thats not figured with a full load or full crew. Or weather conditions. Fully loaded and crewed range might be in the 2500-2800 nm range.

Also every plane is different but you have to plan on reserves. So its quite possible that fully loaded on the G-III and weather conditions, that 2128 might not quite be able to make it, without refueling.

Now the C-37 is a G500/550 it has 6,000+nm range which fully loaded and crewed plus reserves gives you plenty from coast to coast.

Also the G550 costs about $5000 per hour versus the $22,000 per hour of the C-32.

Pelosi wants the airplane because it is supposedly a security issue. Right after 9/11 - there was a lot of uncertainty. But much of that uncertainty has gone, as we have gathered intelligence and have reduced the risk of secret terrorist cells in the U.S.

Yet Pelosi is treating the entire situation as if Pres. Bush is over-reacting. If Pres. Bush is over-reacting - what is the security issue that Pelosi is worried about?

Pelosi's actions and votes suggest that there is NO security issue. Also, her votes would undermine our efforts to stop terrorists, and would make the nation less safe. She should be told that there is no way she should get an Air Force plane.
