Salt Lake Police say a man opened fire inside the Trolley Square Mall on Monday evening. Police have shot and killed one suspect, and there are preliminary reports that at least five people are dead. There is no second shooter loose inside the mall.

Police report that the shooter was shooting at random in mulitiple areas, but is no longer a threat and there is no further risk at Trolley Square.

Police say that there have been "several" vicitms and "some" fatalities and "some" in critical condition, but could not report further. All victims have been transported to several hospitals in the area.

Multiple police and ambulance vehicles surround the area and initial reports say the mall is in lock down. Most people have been evacuated but some may still be locked in stores. Police could not confirm how many, if any, remained in the mall.

Probably no connection but it does feel like the scene from a recent novel or two, or perhaps a 24 episode.

How convenient. 1 month into the Donkey control and we get perfectly symetrical (east coast / west coast) Manchurian killings.

Somebody get the popcorn...

From KSL.com:
"The suspect has been killed. He is no longer a threat," Snyder said.

The man entered the mall about 6:45 p.m. and began shooting randomly, she said.

Two employees of the Williams-Sonoma store, near the southwest corner of Trolley Square, told KSL they heard shots and breaking glass from the area of the west parking garage. They say they saw a gunman, probably in his 20s and wearing a trench coat, come into the mall from the parking garage.

The two-story mall, just southeast of downtown, is a refurbished old trolley barn, with a series of winding hallways and about 80 stores, including the Hard Rock Cafe and an Old Spaghetti Factory.

An antique-store owner, Barrett Dodds, 29, said he saw a man in a trench coat exchanging gunfire with a police officer outside a card store. The gunman was backed into a children's clothing store.

"I saw the cops go in the store. I saw the shooter go down," said Dodds, who watched from the second floor.

Barb McKeown, 60, of Washington, D.C., was in another antique shop when two frantic women ran in and reported gunshots.

"Then we heard shot after shot after shot -- loud, loud, loud," said McKeown, who believes she heard approximately 20 shots.

She and three other people hid under a store staircase until it was safe to leave.

"We live in Washington, D.C. We're used to gunshots," said McKeown, wrapped in a blanket across the street. "I thought I was coming home to safety city."

Initial reports indicated at least six people are involved in various areas of the mall, including the Hard Rock Café, Pottery Barn Kids and the west garage. The initial call for help came from the Sharper Image store. We do not know the condition of any of the reported victims.

Another woman says she saw a man with short hair, wearing a coat and carrying a shotgun. She says he looked anxious as he wandered around with the gun.

If you go to this link, there are several pictures (nothing graphic.) Just many policeman holding weapons.

Nope. Both perps are dead. The one in Philly supposedly by his own hand, and the one in Salt Lake, apparently killed by SWAT.

Shotgun used in the Salt Lake killings, per news reports. (But we all know that reporters don't know a shotgun from a SMG.)

The news feed is linked from Drudge.

Trolley Square is an "upscale" mall. The SLC Hard Rock Cafe is there and a Williams-Sonoma. People still in the mall hiding in stores with the doors locked.TV reports that a cop shot the shooter, no word on SWAT. Shooter supposedly had a backpack with ammo.

It is called Trolley Square because it began life as the trolley barn for the old trolley cars that were part of the transit system here.

Yes, and that resulted in various state and national Assault Weapon Bans, magazine bans, import bans, folding stock bans, and assorted hysteria.

Major gun control in Canada, Austrailia and England has been preceeded by "Columbine Events".

a 24 episode? Which one? None that I've seen come close.
Terrorists don't usually go shoot people at random in malls, They always try kill large numbers with nukes or dirty bombs.

Plus their plans are always foiled by Jack Bower. Well, maybe not in this new series...

Does Utah have a CCW Law? I dare someone to try something like this at one of the malls here in Kentucky. He would find himself the victim of multiple gunshot wounds before he could reload.

Does Utah have a conceal and carry permit? From what I understand (early UNSUBSTANTIATED TV report) is that an off-duty policeman was in the mall and engaged the shooter.

It's nice to have the good guys packing metal; it makes the bad guys serve as targets too. A well armed society is a polite society.

"Probably liberal anti gun nuts on a suicide mission so more gun control laws will get passed in the frenzy!

That's the usual pattern.
The perp is always a democrat too,(most cases) and a second generation immigrant (at least 2 cases) raised by a strict mooslime woman hating parent. (At least 1 case)

Of course, rather than adress the real problem, The liberal gun grabbers just make it easier for the next nutcase that comes along.

Utah has a CCW law. The University of Utah is trying to circumvent the law by forbidding weapons to be carried on their campus. Their rules have been knocked down by the Supreme Court as violating the 2nd amendment.

What do you recomend, a candle light vigil sing along, wailing and crying into the media camera's for gun control, and of course, grief counceling for the entire community because they just never believed this could happen in their town?

The popcorn is for a liberal media frenzy that usually occurs after something like this, knee jerk reactions from liberal politicians using the opportunity to take a few more of your liberties away.

Philly shooting reportedly took place at some sort of "Board meeting" at the Navy Yard (now a shipbuilding center) - shooter was supposedly upset because he thought he was being bilked out of "a half million dollars" by those at the meeting, according to NBC channel 10 - the slaughter in Democrat-controlled Philly goes on.......

Yes, concealed carry is allowed in Utah. But Salt Lake City is very liberal. Trolley Square is just a few blocks southwest of the the University of Utah, near some of the most liberal enclaves of the entire state outside of Park City. You're not likely find very many people carrying concealed weapons in or near Trolley Square.

Shotgun used in the Salt Lake killings, per news reports. (But we all know that reporters don't know a shotgun from a SMG.)

It was probably one of those fully automatic assault shotguns.
