Wow. We were stationed at Yokota a few years back and have been to Zama many times. It's a really pretty base. I'm glad to hear there was no serious damage or injuries.

The Tokyo area as a whole was a pretty safe station. I was never afraid to take the kids out and explore. This is pretty disheartening.

the stories coming out now say there were rocket launcher parts found nearby-- most likely no accident. So I guess it means domestic Japanese terrorists (Aum Shirenko, Red Army etc.), North Korean agents, or Islamic terrorists.

I think the plane was the Osprey, not an F-22.

You are right. The Osprey is a V-22, not an F22

"A small explosion was heard in the vicinity of the base," said Air Force Maj. David Smith.

Don't tell me, Michael Moore is in Japan and he ate burritos last night.

I was in Japan a couple of years ago, and have a Japanese daughter-in-law who hasn't said anything that indicates this. I am very surprised by this info.

Ask her about the gaijin at Ueno Koen. These things may have changed, but there for awhile, it was B A D.

Lots of people came before the "bubble burst" and just stayed passed their visas.

Sometimes in Japan, problems are solved by not recognizing them.

This is what surprises me, because I've been led to believe they keep close track on who is there, how long they'll be there, where they are staying and track them down when they don't leave on time.
I wasn't sure we would get through customs and the visa check. We had to give very specific info about where we were staying, etc. And when my son moved there to marry her, he couldn't get a bank acct., rent an apartment, etc. without a job and without being married or some connection to a citizen. But I will ask her about what you've said.

You're right. There has not been much change. As you know, usually things change slowly, if at all, here. Of course, there are various circles of society, and Japanese may not know of information surrounding the foreign population. Even other non-Japanese residents are unaware of issues in particular ethnic communities. Outside of the Tokyo area, there is even less familiarity with the foreign population.

Read post 96. Its a good start.

You are right, they will put you through the wringer. I was a 3 year permanent resident when I left, so I know what you are saying.

I think what happened was that the system got overwhelmed and instead of making a fuss, they did the Japanese thing and didn't speak of it.

Remember the story of the Brinks robbery? Brinks had this reputation for being tough and unrobbable. The thieves found out that the booty room was guarded by one obsolete alarm and a 2 dollar padlock. True story. What we have here is the same thing. In order to keep our Face, we don't let you know we have a problem.

But anyone walking through certain parts of Tokyo knows better.
