Some in party believe he (Giuliani) can win in California

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.
No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.
Republicans are hopeful they have prospects in the large 2008 field who can reverse the trend by combining liberal and conservative stands that has proven so successful for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The popularity of the governor shows that you can take the positions that he holds and win in California, said Duf Sundheim, outgoing Republican state chairman. I think Giuliani has the same opportunity.
As for Giuliani, backers say his record on reducing crime and taxes in New York should give conservatives plenty to like. He was introduced to the convention yesterday by businessman Bill Simon, the 2002 Republican nominee for California governor who once worked under Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.
Simon said that as mayor, Giuliani cut taxes 23 times and reduced the city's murder rate by 67 percent. That is a record that as a conservative Republican, I can heartily endorse, he said.

Why in the world would California dems vote for Rudy over Hillary? He reminds them of the start of the war while she reminds them of the end. Anyone who thinks Rudy is going to carry that state is deceiving themselves.

Rudy can win in CA, the same way Arnold did, and that will be a major blow to the Dems for many years to come.
The Rudy bashers might want to consider that.

The CA Dems wouldn't, but the independents, which comprise about a third of the electorate and the Republicans would, which would be enough for a win.

Rudy could definitely make Cali competitive, though Bill Clinton's name is gold in the Golden State and Hillary's going to have the edge. But Rudy will certainly beat Hillary in the industrial states that went for Kerry last time: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, maybe Illinois and New Jersey. Between that and Hillary having to pour money into Cali and New York, it's hard to see how she even begins to play for the red states.

Both Hillary and Bill Clinton campaigned for Angelides in CA, Arnold won anyway.
Rudy has an excellent chance of defeating Hillary in CA,using the Arnold approach.

Hillary could take that state without spending $5. The only way a Republican wins is if we repeal Presidential term limits and Bill runs against her as a Republican.

Bill runs against her as a Republican. Well, that would make him the frontrunner amongst FRs new legions of liberals. After all, he meets their only two criteria: He's got an "R" by his name, and "he can win."

The Dems will NOT get withdtrawl of the troops, from Rudy, nor will they get raised taxes, bigger government, more welfare, open admissions to colleges, or a whole host of other things the love.
I suggest that you 1) stop making personal attacks on other posters 2) look at reality, instead of you day dreams 3) become more familiar with politics and how it works.

To: gov_bean_ counter
Sorry, a lot of people consider Rudy a "gun grabber".
Gun registration runs counter to the 2nd Amendment. It's not the government's business who has guns. It only becomes their business when a crime is committed.
Rudy backtracked some on his stance, and Hillary is much worse anyway.

Do we WANT a President who wins California?A candidate that can't compete in the blue states isn't going to win. The Republicans can't go in with the only hope based on defending the 2004 electoral map and set the Democrats up to zero in on one or two states.

You may well be correct, nopardons, but that is no reason to give up on a conservative, or at least non-liberal, candidate. Especially not this early in the race.
Remember how many candidates peaked early, only to lose their appeal when primary season actually started. It's quite common.
Rudy simply has too leftward a slant for most Republicans, but his negatives have simply not been put out into the arena yet.
And, his pro-war stance will not sit well with the lefties, who might otherwise like his social policies. That's a pretty big load coming his way.
So, don't count your chickens, etc.
